Daredevil Flat-Earther ‘Mad’ Mike Hughes has died after launching himself into the sky in a homemade rocket. Purported video of the accident shows the fatal launch.
Hughes and a colleague built the steam-powered rocket in hopes of shooting the daredevil 5,000 feet (1.5km) into the air. The endeavor was being documented by the Science Channel, which wanted to feature him in a new series called ‘Homemade Astronauts’.

A video purportedly filmed at the site shows the rocket being launched into the sky near Barstow, California, before Hughes plunges back down to the earth.

Five thousand feet is a little below that threshold.

If only the Earth was round it might have lessened the impact of hitting a flat surface.

No, wait....

Well that was pretty horrible.
Some pretty poor planning with the parachute deployment design there.

I know nothing of the man. Watched the video. Sorry for his death. Sad that he perished. I will say it was an impressive effort. I have no idea how much time, energy and cost went in to his endeavor.
But it took much courage to get into that device and pull the trigger. I know you guys will call it a dumb move. Could of been. But impressive none the less.
Rip Mike.

Basing an extremely technically scientific attempt on a combination of minimal scientific knowledge and shoddy pseudo-science is not a recipe for success.

Leave building rockets to the rocket scientists if you want to live.

There have been a few rockets built by those "rocket scientists" where those aboard did not live.

Yep. Nothing's guaranteed. Rocket flight and space travel are inherently dangerous. However, it's a safer bet to trust the rocket scientists than to trust a self-taught crackpot with some scrap metal who thinks the world is flat.
