Most conspiracy theory nuts fallback on the idea of “prove me wrong“.
This guy actually made the exceptionally rare attempt to “prove he was right“.

parabellumA balloon could have gotten him to 5000 feet. The risk of impacting the Earth at terminal velocity would be substantially lessened as well.

That was a "drogue" chute attached to the rocket designed to slow it during descent. As it tore away on launch, there was no way for the vehicle to decelerate, so the rocket augured in at 350mph with him in it.

RAMIUSI know others mentioned much easier and better ways to get up high.
So this leads me to believe he was either really stupid, legit crazy, or just doing this silly shit for a reality show paycheck.
Probably a mix of all three.

The thing is, for the price of a simple airline ticket one could prove that theory wrong. Heck, when I took the Travel Air up to 17,500 to check out a newly purchased portable oxygen system, the curvature of the earth was plain to see from there. I do not believe the sort of altitudes he was trying to obtain are enough to see the curvature.
Oh well, at least he stuck the landing...
