While you're learning, if you want to cheat a little bit, heat up some distilled (soft) water in the microwave and soak your soap and brush in that. Good lather forms easier w/ soft water.
I have moderately hard water and this helped me. Nowdays I just attack the soap longer w/ my brush.

Well I got pissed off when Gillette wanted $30 for a few replacement cartridges.

I bought a Merkur 34C and have been using it the past few days. I was still using Edge shaving gel and was less than impressed with the shave.

That has now changed...

I got some shaving soap and a badger brush and that has made all the difference! What a shave!

I'm using Derby blades because I'm a newbie, but I'm looking forward to going thru my sampler blade pack.

I could shave for 7+ years on $30 worth of blades... (now that I have about $300 wrapped up in brushes, soaps, aftershaves, and razors... Eek Roll Eyes Cool )

I shave 3x a week, get at least 4 shaves to a blade (could easily do 6, but why?). 300 blades, 1200 shaves, 7.69 years...

And they are GREAT blades...

This past week,
Since I've had good luck w/ these Sharks in the past, I had to grab more at the price of $6.53.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod...02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And while I don't care for the green Derbys, I thought I'd try the Premium Derbys for under $9.

At these prices, why not buy them by the 100?

Man, Shark and Derby rip my face apart. Same with Astras, both varieties. Too mild. I have a very stout beard and need sharp stuff to cleanly raze it off. Picked up a 200 pack of Feathers for $40 on Amazon recently and I get four good shaves out them and toss. Could probably stretch it to six, but like 911 Boss says, why bother? Wanted to try some Personnas but I got some Feathers in a sampler pack and they worked like a charm, so.... I’m set for a good, long while.

At this point, I am pretty sure I am set for life.

If memory serves, my stockpile should be somewhere around...

300+ PolSilvers
200+ Personna Red
200 Gillette Silver Blue (bought before they got “woke”)
200+ Rapira
100 Voskhod
50-60 Lord
50 Gillette 7 O’clock
And another 60-80 misc...

Hmmm, roughly 1200 blades.... <math>

30+ years I figure....

Oh! These are new, anyone tried them?

Damn you guys for starting me on this journey.

In an effort to save $30, I've spent a fortune!

Found some old vintage Gillettes at a flea market. Been spending time shaving with those razors and they are incredible.

I had a 1957 Super Speed revamped and replated. I will shave with it for the first time tomorrow.

I am currently revamping and replating a red tip I found in Round Top. I should receive that in a couple of weeks.

You think safety razors are bad... just wait till they hook you on fountain pens.

I purchased a Rockwell 6C in gunmetal grey a couple months back, plus 100 of their blades, and couldn’t be happier. A DE razor is a bit difficult for around the nose shaving so I might find a single blade razor for that area, such as a Blackland Vector. Now I get to explore all the pre-shave accoutrements that goes with safety razors Cool
