I'd forgotten so I went to look.... yeah pieces like the Grand Seiko Hi-Beat 36000 Cal 9S85 Professional 600m diver's watch. Smile

Nice article on your watch: https://www.fratellowatches.co...l-the-best-in-class/

On the Marine Master, and this is mere guesswork:

It is longstanding model that has never been in the GS range, so they don't want to move it there.

I believe the MM cases are polished in the same way the GS are polished. However, I don't think the hands and dial are done to GS levels of finish.

It is true that the Marine Master movement is undecorated, and that movement gets some decoration on the GS models that use it as a base movement.

I don’t like to see the “X” replace “Marinemaster”. I understand the branding but to me it lowers the overall appearance of the watch...almost to an entry level. At their price I’d rather find good a pre-owned Seamaster for that $$$$.

pocketwatch by Kent Matthew, on Flickr

I found this pocket watch cleaning out a room. It doesn't keep time. The best it did after winding was about 6 hours. Can my local watch/jeweler guy repair this, and if so how much would something like that cost?

goose5,
It would help to know more details. Brand? Model? Movement?
Locally our jewelers send stuff off for repair. One guy specializes in pocket watches. Another firm handles high end wristwatches. Prices vary depending on the piece and what needs to be done.

Zaratsu polishing. Same as the GS line. The hands, while not up to GS standards are worthy of using a loupe to appreciate, very nice.

The 8l35b is what's in them now and it is decorated. Unregulated though unfortunately. They really should regulate them.

Inside the box it came in says, "established in Scotland The Sgian Dubh Co. The second hand is chugging away. The other two hands don't want to do their business. Since it winds I'm assuming its a mechanical movement. I found this on line and it goes for about 120 dollars.

Did you see the size of them? Dwarfs the MM.

Additionally, not a fan of the hands, but that's a subjective thing.

That said, absolute top quality.

Yup 47mm. Not intimidating as I have and wear a 47.5mm Zeno XXL Pilot GMT as well as both my 46mm Glycines (Airman 46 and KMU46) on my 7.8" wrist. Most of my watches are in the over 40mm range.

Here's an old shot of the 46mm Airman on my wrist.

Sure, I get that measurement and agree with you.

I'm talking about the HEIGHT.

The GS divers are tall, very tall. Makes my MM flat like a skateboard by comparison and the MM is a tall watch.

And they're big around.

Ah... 17mm thick. Missed that earlier. But my Aquastar Benthos I is 15.5mm and Marathon SAR 14mm thick, so the Grand Seiko isn't all that much thicker.

Certified watchmaker here, and I started out refurbishing pocket watches. Like any machine, a mechanical watch has moving parts that require periodic maintenance. Your watch probably doesn't have anything broken (except maybe the mainspring), but rather just needs to be cleaned and lubricated. Although certain unethical "watch repair specialists" will just take out the whole movement and dunk it in cleaning fluid and then oil it, a proper job requires disassembling each part, cleaning them, reassembling them, and then lubricating only that parts the need to be lubricated and doing so with the right lubricant. (Some parts need grease, some need oil, etc.) As you might imagine, the expertise to do it right is a valuable commodity, and so the service isn't inexpensive. Whether it is worth your money depends on how much you value the watch. Properly servicing an old watch may cost more than you paid for the watch, and it needs to be done every 5 to 10 years on average.

My 206 is 17mm tall, but due to the design and the domed crystal, it wears lower than my MM which is flat and tall at 15mm.

IOW, I'm always smacking doorways with the MM but not with the 206.

If you can, check out reviews for the GS divers including spring drive models. I can't remember where I saw it, but I did read and view how overtly large they wear and it is an offsetting thing for some. If they made them a bit smaller they would sell more of them.

I just ordered this Rado Hyperchrome today with a $20 off coupon and FREE shipping. $475 to the door.

If you want a NICE Swiss dress watch, now it the time as Rado is in their model swap. They are bringing back the Golden Horse and it's at a premium, while you can have this close relative for a fraction.

My Yema is running nicely. I reset it on Monday morning after the time change, and it is +4/5 seconds for the two intervening days. I have been wearing it during my waking hours since I got it. That is good timekeeping for an automatic.

Agree about the "tuna cans" but personally don't see it for the GS models we've discussed. Obviously YMMV.

I just got home from a garage sale, picked this watch up for $1.00 and I don't even wear one. I know nothing about watches, not my thing. Runs good. Thought I would show it here, you guys know more about this than I do.

Nice score! Here's information on your watch. 1971 vintage.

Replace the acrylic crystal and bracelet/strap and have the cal.7270 movement serviced and you'll have a nice cushion cased watch. Smile

Woohoo! You scored! $1.00 for almost any mechanical watch is a good deal.

That bracelet isn't the right one for that watch (It looks like it's about a millimeter too narrow), and the crystal is pretty scratched up, but other than that it looks pretty good. Does it run?
