I like the Ferrari "blueprint" close-up here but it would be hard to even know what it was on the track or at any distance.
Most of these other livery changes just seem like some sort of marketing/PR effort that is about as useful as celebrity photos.
They all seem to do it whenever there's an opportunity.

Haas drops Esteban Ocon for F1 Mexico GP

The Frenchman will be replaced by Haas reserve Ryo Hirakawa for the remainder of the Mexican weekend

Ed Hardy Oct 31, 2026 at 10:29 AM

The Haas Formula 1 team has made the shock decision to replace Esteban Ocon with reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa for the remainder of the Mexico Grand Prix weekend.

Hirakawa will act as Oliver Bearman’s team-mate for final practice, qualifying and Sunday’s race, having also taken Ocon’s VF-26 on Friday morning as part of the rookie mandate for FP1 sessions.

Ocon returned for second practice, finishing 13th, but caused a stir following his spat with race engineer Laura Mueller over whether to stick to the soft tyres or switch to medium rubber.

A Haas statement read: “Ryo Hirakawa will replace Esteban Ocon for the remainder of the weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix.

“Ryo participated in FP1 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez on Friday, his third free practice outing of the season driving the VF-26, finishing 15th overall.

“The Japanese driver will partner team-mate Ollie Bearman through final practice and qualifying on Saturday and Sunday’s 71-lap grand prix – marking Ryo's Formula 1 race debut.

“No further statements will be made at this time."

Though Haas subsequently added: "No comment beyond the statement other than to confirm it’s not due to illness."

Hirakawa’s F1 debut will come at the age of 32. He spent much of his career in Japan, becoming the 2017 Super GT champion, before moving to the World Endurance Championship.

He has claimed two WEC titles with Toyota, alongside victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours, and that relationship with the Japanese marque earned him a move to Haas as its reserve driver in 2025.

That came as the result of Toyota and Haas forming a technical partnership, leading to him contesting seven FP1 sessions and being a contender for a 2027 F1 seat - only to lose out to Rafael Camara.

For Ocon – who is set to be replaced by Camara – it marks a striking resemblance to how his Alpine stint ended in 2024, as he was replaced by successor Jack Doohan for the Abu Dhabi finale.

The 30-year-old Frenchman is likely to become Aston Martin’s reserve in 2027, Motorsport.com understands, after a disappointing time since joining Haas in 2025 – comfortably being beaten by Bearman.

The self-righteous cry baby got kicked out of another team because he never does anything wrong. If he ever went trans, he'd be perfect for F1 Academy. Haas might has well try to get Rafa Camara early and run him in the remaining races to help him out for next year.

His radio meltdown near the end of P2 wasn't a good look. I don't see him blending in with the Stroll family next year, as has been mentioned (reserve driver).
He's a decent driver but nothing special at the F1 level so that behavior wasn't ever going to get him anywhere. In fact it's led to him being shown the door twice now.

The Lawson-Verstappen dustup was another strange incident this week. The difference is that Lawson is performing well this year, but also doesn't have a confirmed seat for next year. Now he's starting at the back due to some strange technical rule regarding power harvesting after the finish line in qualifying.

Alonso, I do feel sorry for. He was having a great weekend so far and now he also has to start near the back due to no fault of his own.

It's the same rule that they banned earlier in the year where Mercedes would be qualifying and have their MGU shut off after they crossed the finish line causing their speed to plummet. It's a safety rule to avoid other cars plowing into the slower cars at high speed.

I wondered during his interview after Q1 when they asked what happened how much he had to bite his lip and just say "Engine" instead of "GP2 Engine." It also makes me wonder in IndyCar if Alonso does that "guest driver" thing if his Aston Martin contract would mean he would be stuck driving a Honda?

It is good to see Bottas walk away from that one.

Brake/hub issues again?

They said something about brake heat issues on the Sky feed [overheated & stressed the carbon?]. Pretty scary at that speed to just have the whole assembly let go.

I haven't ready anything about Bottas, so I'm going to assume he's just banged up but good enough for Brazil.

Piastri and the Alpine duo also got post race penalties which jumps Ryo Hirakawa into the points for his first F1 race. He probably did better than Ocon could have done if he raced yesterday. Congrats to the Rookie!

Also wondering if George Russell is on suicide watch for choking away an almost guaranteed championship to his teammate.

Congrats to Ryo!
And to Kimi! 12 WDC on the podium Eek

The stop/start nature of the race kept it interesting.
I'm a Bottas far, so it's tough watching him squander at the back. He seems to have good intial pace, then immediately drops backward after a few laps.
Not sure if he's just not gelling with this generation of cars, or if it's that plus driving the dumpster fire that is the Cadillac.
Hoping he gets another shot next year, and they make big strides in the off-season.

How will Ferrari try to get control of their drivers, so they don't cause so much harm to the overall team results?
That's the big question this week.
The race itself had lots of interesting moments beyond the Ferrari dramas.
Bottas looks like a guy that's just there to collect his remaining paychecks. The TV folks mentioned that he had two years left on his contract and would have to be bought out, if he didn't just decide to quit. Perez gave it a go while his car was running.

I wouldn't diss on Bottas like that. The guy is doing his best while driving a rusted out hooptie from Detroit. There is a video on the Cadillac youtube page where they show the engineers evaluating parts and basically they are passing parts that shouldn't be passed. This weekend, Bottas' car had a catastrophic failure of the driver's front wheel. Cadillac is going to get a driver killed using their GM save a penny mindset.

Bottas is definitely driving a sh*t car and has had bad luck, but the fact remains that of the two drivers, he’s slower than Perez nearly all of the time. If they want to bring in Herta, he’s the one who’s going to give up the seat.

Guess Georgie was too “distraught” to face the media after Kimi won the championship and left the track. What a baby.

Yep. Even when his car worked in this race he was always around 25 seconds behind Perez, finished a lap behind Perez at Singapore, and 2 laps down at Monza when both Sadillacs have finished a race since the summer break. I hate to say he's done, but the forks are nearby.

For Ferrari at this point, Vasseur will just have to tell both drivers to hold position for Lap 1 if they're next to each other. After Max got passed the Hamster, I 100% agree with rolling the dice on a penalty vs slowing down to let Max and Lewis pass. That would have been game over from the start.

I’m hearing that Botas is out next year and that a driver from F2, who is in the Ferrari Academy will be filling the seat. He is currently leading the series.

As far as Ferrari goes it is absolutely ridiculous that the continue to operate with their collective heads up their asses. The two biggest drawbacks they have is that they have zero ability to strategize the race, particularly on the fly like RB does brilliantly.
The second issue is their all in lovefest with LeClerc. While he is a good driver he isn’t on the level of LH (and I’m not necessarily a big Hamilton fan although he is warming up).
They need to say “sorry Charlie, you’re the number two driver and you need to start behaving like that…”

…and a bonus comment, Fred is an idiot and needs to be replaced but I guess he’s too chummy with the leadership.

^ Colton Herta?

Sky was on the fence with whether he has enough super license points to qualify. IIRC it comes down to how the championship wraps up & where he finishes.

While an American in an American team [with an Italian engine] would be great, I'm a Bottas fan, so it'd be a bummer for me.

Bottas fan as well. Ferarri should dump Chuck and bring in Bottas. Then you have the dream team back together. LH and VB were great together.
