Yessir. Looking for something in the pappy/WLW/papa stagg arena. Ive got a 2016 handy id throw in but itd have to be something worth it and close to equal retail market prices. Like a pappy 20 or something as it retailed for 150ish this year. What man is a man that does not make the world better. -Balian of Ibelin Only boring people get bored. - Ruth Burke

You had to pay $150 for the 2016 Handy?

No no, about 88 a pice. So 160 area combined. Retail value for retail value. I just mentioned that in case someone had something worth 150 or two bottles or something. I dont really want to give up a handy but being i have my 2015 3/4 full i could make it work. Had a solid pour of '15 WLW to celebrate the Pats' convincing win over the over-matched Steelers last night. Yummo! Now on to Houston - here, here little birdies . . . . . . . . TTFN, "Point Blank" Frank 8-) I miss Erhardt!

ER 10 was the first good bourbon I ever tried, and I'm still a fan, so I'm tempted, but I don't think I'm wired for trades. I work so hard to get what I have, I'm reluctant to give it up, even if it isn't my taste. As an example, yesterday, I was notified I won a bottle of Elijah Craig 18. I was happy to get my hands on a bottle last year pre-lottery, but halfway through it just doesn't do much for me. Most reviews were very positive, but for my taste it's a dry tannic oak bomb that is past it's prime, especially at $130. I have bought a couple of different bottles over the years with the idea I'll trade them later, but I never do. It's so damn hard to win anything in the lottery here now, and there were only 192 bottles of the 18 in VA this time, so I'll likely pick it up. I don't know when I'll get another chance. And, as a different release, it could be better than the bottle I have, who knows. A good example of potential trade bait, but knowing me, I'll be reluctant to let it go. Speaking of potential Oak Bombs, anybody try the Parker's Heritage 24 BIB? That goes to lottery tomorrow with only 60 bottles for the entire state. $250 for that one. Ouch! I think I paid $80 for release #9.This message has been edited. Last edited by: jigray3, "We have a system that increasingly taxes work, and increasingly subsidizes non-work" - Milton Friedman

^ it's interesting you mention that, as EC 18 was one of the first older Bourbons that gave me the impression that I generally don't like older Bourbons like that. Way too woody. However, 17-18yrs is about where the cutoff is for me, as I've had outstanding Four Roses that was right about that age, as some lost barrel BTEC that was about that age too, and, of course, the Stitzel-Weller 20yo Pappy is/was pretty fantastic, too. Still, few exceptions IMO These days I tread very carefully when it comes to anything over 15yrs.

I was thinking of you as I typed that, 46and2 since you were the first to make me really aware that excessive age doesn't necessarily mean better bourbon. I would say at 20 yrs. old Barterhouse stands up well. It's not a great bourbon, but very enjoyable, and the age does seem to give it a unique profile that includes wood, but in balance. I've certainly paid more for far worse. So, at $130 for the EC18, you'd pass, despite the fact you like the 12 and BP, huh? And with the Parker's, how can you tread lightly? At $250 you're taking a big risk, and if you wait for reviews or an opportunity to taste it somewhere, it'll be gone. You either roll the dice, or you don't. EC not even a 12 anymore. Too much demand, its a blend of 12 and 8s per the distillery. Its happening everywhere in KY I will also say the Eagle Rare 17 is not as achy as the Elijah Craig 18 however I don't really like either. I wish the Eagle Rare 17 was at 115 proof What man is a man that does not make the world better. -Balian of Ibelin Only boring people get bored. - Ruth Burke

I've done nothing but pass on EC18. It was too woody when it was $45. No way I'm paying $130+ for something I don't enjoy. The Parker's 10th is a huge risk. I'd love to try it but I passed on buying due to cost. You're either all in or not though you could trade samples if you absolutely hate it.

OK, so I should vat my bottle of EC18 with some ECBP (138.8 pf, 139.4 pf, or 136.0 pf) then? Or add some EC12, too (I have all of the above)? Inquiring minds want to know . . . . . TTFN, "Point Blank" Frank 8-) I miss Erhardt!

I might order from Hi Time once or twice a year when they have a sale and something I want is available. They've really jacked their prices over the past few years and I'm not a fan of what they do with the limited stuff. Being 400 miles away I've never visited the shop.

Ya that pisses me off. I have a friend over that way which is how i got tied in. Im surprised sazerac allows the gouging but im guessing the volume is nuts. What man is a man that does not make the world better. -Balian of Ibelin Only boring people get bored. - Ruth Burke

Not a ton Sazerac can do. They could lean on the distributor but Young's is unlikely to change allocations for a big shop and certainly won't cut them off given the amount of wine, beer, and spirits they move. Sazerac gets to have it both ways on the limited stuff. They can feel your pain on high pricing at retail while using the demand for limited stuff to drive sales of more available brands. Can't get WLW? Have some Weller 12. Oh, Weller 12 is impossible now? Have some Weller Special Reserve.

So, it is worth buying after all. I had a few pours from my open bottle, and was surprised it wasn't quite the oak bomb I remembered. Maybe time helped. Adding a little branch water, something I rarely do with 90 proof bourbon, really seemed to dissipate the tannins and opened it up. Much more enjoyable. You guys are probably right, and I'd be far better served buying 2 bottles of Booker's and a bottle of OGD114 for the same price, but I still haven't ruled it out. Ive got about 3 weeks to decide before the local store ships it back to the warehouse. "We have a system that increasingly taxes work, and increasingly subsidizes non-work" - Milton Friedman

I have been reading a good bit of this thread, is there a page that tells me what brands your are speaking of in initials only? I have figured some of them out. I have always like bourbon but never read up on it . I have been trying different ones when out and about, bought a few that were mentioned on here. Is speaking of Canadian whiskey verboten here? Enjoying the read and finding Bourbons I like very much.

You mean like Silk Tassel? After all it is owned by Sazerac. I'm alright it's the rest of the world that's all screwed up!

I don't drink much Canadian whiskey beyond some of the rye that comes down but discuss away. I find Lot 40 very good neat and great in mixed drinks. It's a great value for the money.
