A new film from Christopher Nolan. Wondering how it will compare to Fat Man and Little Boy, which didn't do so well but I actually liked it. Opening 7/21, only in theaters.

The problem with the portrayal of Oppenheimer in Fat Man and Little Boy was the casting of Dwight Schultz, who wasn't anything like the real Oppenheimer.

I have seen every Christopher Nolan film, one of the few directors. And he never disappoints me. One of the few guys who insist on shooting with large-format film, not video. And I have been a fan of Cillian Murphy's work for years. Looking forward to seeing this in a real IMAX theater. Yeah, this is one I would go to an IMAX for. I think it looks really promising. ______________________________________________ “There are plenty of good reasons for fighting, but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too.”

Don't remember if this was recommended here or by own of my bosses, but I'm reading this now as well. Not so much in prep for movie, but does sort of have that effect. About half way through, very interesting book, lot's of backstory long before Manhattan Project. You only have integrity once. - imprezaguy02

This one I’m going to see in the theater.

Early viewers reportedly devastated by 'Oppenheimer,' call it a horror movie Dan Gentile June 22, 2023 Few things are more terrifying than nuclear war, and it’s looking like Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” film captures that terror... Wednesday, Variety reported that early reactions to the film have been visceral, to say the least. The accounts come from Nolan himself, so they should be taken with a grain of salt, but he noted that those who’ve seen the film have had intense emotional reactions. One of Nolan’s fellow filmmakers, who was not named in the story, said, “It’s kind of a horror movie.” “Some people leave the movie absolutely devastated,” Nolan said to Variety. “They can’t speak. I mean, there’s an element of fear that’s there in the history and there in the underpinnings. But the love of the characters, the love of the relationships, is as strong as I’ve ever done.” Oppenheimer biographer Kai Bird, whose 2005 book served as the source material for the film, echoed Nolan’s sentiments in an interview with the Institute for Advanced Study. “I am, at the moment, stunned and emotionally recovering from having seen it.” SFGate

Uhh, what? I suppose for the ignorant among us, the facts of the matter might be shocking, but what a pile of overwrought crap, with this "stunned, unable to speak" nonsense. Melodramatic pap. Posturing. I am not impressed, though- apparently- I am definitely supposed to be.

It’s a Christopher Nolan film. He’s one of the best directors there is, and doesn’t give a fuck about your feelings. He makes art via cinema. Sounds like a bunch of candy asses went to see it, all Disney blow em CGI trained and couldn’t handle a little dose of reality told through a director’s lens. Ah buttercups. Now I want to see it more. But I won’t be going to the theater. Will pre-order to rent it on 4k blu ray, and if it’s like his other films, end up buying it. They tend to be reference films even as he insists on using 5.1 instead of 7 channels or full Atmos. What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

It maybe that it just shows folks a hint of the Genie we have let out of the bottle. It's been what 77 years since we ended WWII and I think humanity has lost sight of what actually happened in that 'conflict' ... During the 'height' of our covid pandemic I decided to do some research... and at that moment just over 4 million people had died of the virus... and from every media perspective things were so bad they had never been that bad before.... I then looked to see how many people died in WWII and the number was something like 73 Million! One of the pretty much forgotten facts is we, the US even before dropping the two 'big' bombs on Japan had already out killed both Germany and Japan with bombing of 'civilians'. Look up March 9th and 10th of 1945.... we incinerated 16 Square miles of Tokyo.... best guess is over 100,000 people were incinerated. Don't read that as a condemnation of the U.S.... I'm just really glad we won. My Native American Name: "Runs with Scissors"

Well, regardless of the pre-screening reviews (or hype), I'm already committed; I purchased reserved tickets to see it in a real IMAX 70mm film theater for late July. If I recall, there are less than two dozen of these locations in the U.S. Chris Nolan has enough pull to get me into a theater, projected in film no less. Oppenheimer related fun facts: WWII Atomic bomb yield: Approximately 18 Kilotons. Commonly deployed "modern" nuke: (B61 dial a yield) 340 Kilotons. Consider during the Cold War, multiple SAC bases all across the US were prepared to launch multiple nuke loaded B52s (each with multiple nukes aboard) at a moments notice. Then factor in the nuke sub fleet. There is your horror story. I will take in the movie to see the beginnings of nuke technology. End of Earth: 2 Miles Upper Peninsula: 4 Miles

To Blumes point I recommend "Logical Insanity" by Dan Carlin to anyone. He basically describes and discusses the concept of bombing campaigns to that point versus the Atomic bomb.

Please take my comments with a big dose of salt because I'm pretty sure some of my ideas are too far out there.... speaking of nukes I firmly believe we would have saved thousands of lives both American and others aa well as trillions of dollars if we had nuked the Afghan mountains on September 12th where we knew BenLaden was but our industrial military complex would not have liked or profited from it.... ^^^^ Yup! In the words of CAPT Frank Ramsey, "Drop that fucker. Twice!" Looks like a great movie...will have to venture out to the theater for this one. As noted above, I will seek out an IMAX showing, and there is one at my local theater. I just hope a lot of "theatrical licensing" hasn't been injected into the plot and the movie hasn't been "hollywooded"... "If you’re a leader, you lead the way. By the way, all those ignorant movie-goers who have been "stunned" into silence Do they realize that Trinity, Fat Man and Little Boy were firecrackers compared to what we have now- and have had since before they were born? Any chance that they have that much of a clue? I suppose if they did, they would need to be sedated and have years of psychotherapy. Buncha pussies
