Yep, that's the one I was talking about.
Used to be Silverado IIRC.
Bit of a drive for me, but not bad. Still might opt for the Star Cinema Grill off 99/I45
Smaller screen, but also smaller crowd, and dinner & a movie date night.

What the hell's with this movie? "Barbenheimer"?

The ‘Oppenheimer’-‘Barbie’ double feature challenge is sweeping the nation
Gabe Lehman

July 11, 2023

What started as an internet meme has turned into a full fledged phenomenon. In just 10 days, the long-anticipated “Barbie”/“Oppenheimer” double feature is slated to become a reality, with the fate of the movie industry in the balance.

“Barbenheimer,” as the twin debut is affectionately known, has immense expectations. As the Los Angeles Times notes, film revenues have not recovered to pre-pandemic levels, and the underwhelming box office returns of would-be blockbuster’s like “Elemental” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” have not helped...

“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” will both open against this landscape but couldn’t be more different. Northern California-born Greta Gerwig’s comedy about a sentient child’s doll is about as far as you could get from Christopher Nolan’s thriller about the UC Berkeley scientist who became the father of the atomic bomb.

But that’s the appeal to many film nerds, who — supposedly jokingly — started discussing what a great double feature the two movies would make. The idea took off, and has even been endorsed by the likes of Tom Cruise.

And in a wild turn of events, Barbenheimer looks like it might actually deliver on its promise.

According to Variety, AMC Theatres announced that 20,000 movie buffs have already reserved seats for a “Barbie”-“Oppenheimer” double feature.

“That more than 20,000 moviegoers have already made plans and purchased tickets to see ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ on the same day is a great sign that the growing online conversation around seeing both of these incredible films is turning into ticket sales,” said Elizabeth Frank, executive vice president of worldwide programming and chief content officer at AMC Theatres, according to Variety.

That my friends might be the dumbest shit I’ve seen in marketing, in film. The two films are polar opposites of each other and what adult in their right mind wants to see Barbie? And what parent would take their child to see both? SMH.

20k moviegoers, or 20k bots picking up tickets that will remain empty?

Need to convince my boss that we need a teambuilding lunch & duck out of the office to go catch this [Oppenheimer, not Barbie].

Is it so difficult to process that someone can enjoy a comedy as much as a drama?
BTW, Barbie is rated PG-13, so children are not its target market.

So just who IS the target market? Twenty or thirty something women who had Barbie dolls as kids?

I'm definitely seeing Oppenheimer but I'll pass on Barbie.

I'd compare it to a film like Pee Wee's Big Adventure. That movie got greenlit after Pee Wee Herman's Saturday morning kid's show became a hit, but the movie was geared towards all ages ~11+ and did well among minors & adults, males & females.

You think a stupid Barbie movie is a comedy? We can just agree to disagree friend. I’ll never watch Barbie anything. And I think the pairing is completely stupid and won’t work.

According to Christopher Nolan, this is the longest an IMAX film can be and still fit on the platter. IMAX Digital doesn't have that problem, but for IMAX Film, Oppenheimer is the longest film that can be screened without breaking the equipment.

There was also a recent news post that Nolan was proud that there was 0% CGI used in this movie. Every shot in the movie was filmed in camera even though he was not allowed to detonate and film a 25 kiloton nuclear weapon. It also makes me wonder exactly how it was done.

No one is being forced to buy tickets to both. It appears the whole Barbenheimer meme has flown over your head. It is viewers' idea to pair the two as a double-feature, not the studios'. If the pairing doesn't work, it won't affect the studios one iota.

If you ask me this Barbenheimer nonsense is just a desperation move by these movie makers and the dying theaters they are desperate for people to go watch them in.

It still has not dawned on them that they are dinosaurs and the whole concept of movie makers releasing huge budget blockbuster movies to movie theaters where people will flock to is dead.

The bigger the TV’s get, the better the soundbars get, the better the streaming platforms get the deeper the nails get driven into the movie theater industry’s coffin.

Spiderman: Far From Home, Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar 2, and Super Mario Bros. disagree with your proclamation. If Movie Studios make films worth watching, the public will go out and spend billions seeing that movie like the examples above. Sound of Freedom is already printing money and Oppenheimer has the potential to be one of those movies.

Nothing flew over my head. I said it was just stupid, and it is. A total reflection of our current society. Bunch of idiots running around an asylum.

His point was accurate. People are starved for something to do since Covid. Most people, do not have any hobbies. They aren’t gun enthusiasts, motorcycle enthusiasts, etc, and don’t do anything physical. They are simply super consumers that have no lives outside of watching corporate television, all the advertising they can suck up to their brains, and gorging food. Many of these people will flock to cineplex to see the latest thing, just so they can say they’ve seen it. Just so they can get on their social medias instagoogletwatface and say they’ve done X. His point was that industry, the cineplexes, are dying. The coffin nails aren’t in yet but it’s headed that way. I can attest 100% to what he said as film has been a passion since I was a tot. I left the cineplexes in 2019 out of pure frustration with the bullshit I’d have to endure. Idiots sitting next to me with food for 3 people. One couple had a XL pizza, chicken fingers, drinks, appetizers, so much shit you couldn’t see either of their laps. The smell of all that is not meant for a theater. You don’t even have to deal with that at a restaurant as you have spacing between the tables. My preferred theater here is a Cinemark, and once they started serving full meals, oh my. I guess the courtesy of going to eat first, then the movie is gone. Just do it all right there. I’m surprised there isn’t a shitter in the same theater room.

Then the phones, how these thots cannot refrain from touching my precious for even 5 minutes. Every 5 minutes blue screen to my left, to my right, in front of me. No respect given for the audience, for the people around you, because they don’t give a fuck. I built a Dolby Cinema in my house for a very reasonable sum in 2019 and I haven’t been back since that year and won’t. The MLP positioning I have, I don’t miss a big screen, don’t need it. I have a big ass screen in my house that does HDR10 and Dolby Vision. 11 speakers, 7 surround and 4 overhead for Dolby Atmos. Plus two 15” subs. The PQ is better in my HT than what the cineplex offers, the sound is better, louder, tuned better, because it’s tuned for my MLP instead of hundreds of seats. It’s a Dolby Cinema.

The 4k panels just keep getting better and better as he said. I bought a new one for my gaming setup last week, a 42” LG C2 OLED, and the blacks, are like wet black ink. Disgustingly good. When my HT panel burns up years from now I’ll definitely be going OLED.
And what is awesome is every single film that comes out, 90 days later it’s on 4k Blu Ray for rental. Cost me about $3 a disc, mailed to my home. He also sound bars are getting better and they are. I have wood paneling in the living room and I’m not drilling that wood for speaker wire since I will sell this place when time allows and move rural. So I run a Nakamichi 9.2.4 sound bar in there and it’s excellent. Not as good as real speakers, but it’s pretty damn good. It alone would be good enough to leave the commercial theaters for good with a solid panel and 4k blu ray player.

I guess it would make sense if you watch Barbie after Oppenheimer. Something silly and sugary as a palate cleanser after being "devastated" by the horror of the former. Roll Eyes
