May be in the minority here, but I’m ok with this. I have 2 asthmatic kids and an asthmatic, teacher wife. Three of our five family members are at higher risk. Plus, our district was coming back from spring break tomorrow. Tons of families traveled, many to areas whose numbers have started to increase.

There’s preliminary evidence that children can be in a sub clinical infection state and be contagious.

So, what's gonna happen to all of the restaurant employees that don't get paid for a week or more? Are rent, utilities, car payments and credit card payments suspended for the time everyone can't work? I haven't heard that, so I guess everyone is sol when they're credit is ruined and the repo man comes calling. This is utter madness. You didn't get the virus, awesome! But now your living on the street without a job.

New York City schools will shut down Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Sunday after a week of mounting pressure from parents, unions and other elected officials to shutter the schools amid the rapid spread of the coronavirus.

“It is time to take more drastic measures,” de Blasio said during an update at City Hall Sunday evening. “This is a decision I have taken with no joy whatsoever."

“Our first attempt to reopen public schools will be Monday, April 20,” de Blasio said. “We may not have the opportunity to reopen them in this full school year.”

“We’re going to be making day-to-day, hour-to-hour decisions,” he said. “I’m not ruling anything out. We’re going to make each announcement the second it's ready. Every option is on the table.”

He said he would not prevent people from going outside their homes yet, but added "we may say that very, very soon."

I don't buy any of it. Hey, close everything but everyone go to the grocery. They can't stop it, they can't slow it. They can destroy people's lives. I don't know how the ban affects private daycare centers yet, but if they force those closed then my ex-wife will lose everything in a month. She'll lose the house, the business, everything. They are always just scraping by. I guess on a good note maybe my kids will come live with me.

It's not rocket science. We know how it spreads. If you avoid public places and contact your chances of contracting it lessen. Over time odds are you'll get it anyway but you'll get it a whole lot faster if you go to large gatherings of people several times a week. Schools and daycares, as well as hospitals are petri dishes. People with strong immune systems, like children, can an do bring illness to those with compromised immune systems all the time.

I understand completely about daycares. My wife and I ran a private daycare for 20 years. When the recession hit we lost 50 percent of our clients in one month because they lost their jobs. September of 2009. We went from working 8-10 hour days to 12 hour days 5 days a week with a 60% pay cut. Obamacare fucked us royally after that. We didn't start to see any light or even normal working hours until 2016. I learned other skills and supplemented. Believe me, I get it. It sucks and I realize this means nothing but I am sorry for your ex-wife's situation. Even if they don't close them, she'll likely take a hit because her clients will be impacted regardless.

As far as Civilian vs Military triage goes, Italy hasn't even gone to military triage yet and they're already turning folks away and not letting folks out of the house.

She also has 40 employees that will lose their jobs. There are serious implications to the policies being implemented.

These go to eleven.

Personally I think there is going to have to be some kind of mandatory directed "reset" where the down time forced by the panic is waived as if the weeks or months never happened.

Of course that doesn't address folks running out of emergency funds IF they have anywhere to spend them.

I tend to agree with you. Almost as if the government is going to have to direct banks and lenders, "As of x date and time, no further loans (mortgages, cars, etc) will be due. There will be no late fees. At a future date, we will restart as if nothing happened."

Which is completely freaking insane.

My personal experience with natural disasters is that there will quite a bit of governmental assistance. Many will end up much better as a result, others will get little in the way of help. As I am self employed, I am largely on my own. All of us will take financial hits. In the end most of us will survive and thrive. Time will tell, but we will get through this crisis.

My wife and her coworkers will be filing unemployment. Beyond just saying those words, I'm not sure what that entails. I don't have experience with it.

My wife and I are perfectly comfortable on just my salary, but I know that a lot of the people that she works with rely solely on that income (tips mostly). Gonna be rough for them no doubt

Was out at my local tonight. The bartenders were shutting her down. Were told Lamont was going to announce take out only starting tomorrow. Dudes are hosed, out of work for at least 3 weeks. It was an odd vibe, sort of like a snow day.

Good choice if you want a normal Vegas trip. Things are closing. We are leaving Tuesday and not doing anything Vegas. Just heading out in the early morning to hike isolated places and returning to sleep.

Walked through the casino and less then a quarter of the gaming tables have anyone at them. Same with the slots. The tables that have people have one or two each.

I remember thinking China is locking down 750 million people when they had a reported 900 deaths in a population of 1.4 billion seemed to be excessive.

Now we have a President/Government basically ruining a very robust economy for the same reason.

Why? what are we missing?

Talking with my wise beyond his years and completely un-woke 16 year old son, who also happens to be hispanic, we looked up car accident fatalities. About 100 a day in the U.S. and 36K a year. This is 10x the reported deaths in China from COVID.

So in the interest of traffic safety, with respect to the actions taken to prevent deaths from COVID, should we ban driving? Should we mandate speed limits of 10 MPH so no collision will be fatal?

We are going to bankrupt many small businesses, along with major airlines, and many other businesses, to prevent the spread of a disease that 99% of infected people will survive. And we are going to decimate the retirement savings of the people we intended to save...

You can't put a price on human life. But we do, every day, because the world cannot be made 100% safe.

Yes there are. That 60% pay cut I mentioned earlier existed in part because it is hard as hell to look at an employee and say too bad so sad. We often didn't even take a salary so those working for us were covered. It's sustainable in the short run but not for any real time.

Our governor went from recommending schools stay in session on Friday to now recommending they be closed for 30 days. Our spring break starts tomorrow. I just received the text our school district is closed until at least April 13th.
