That's an amazing story. Some people are capable of reacting very quickly under incredible stress.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

From what I've read on other sites, the flap setting prior to TO is a bit misleading.

The plane will scream at you if you do not have the flaps set however the 787 only requires that you have a TO flap setting in place but not necessarily the ideal one.

For instance, if the correct setting was Flaps 5 but you selected Flaps 20, the plane wouldn't scream because Flaps 20 can be used for short fields and is a correct TO setting. The plane will let you select any flap setting so long a it is one used for TOs.

He involuntarily deboarded the plane as it slowed down:

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Another medic said Ramesh told him that immediately after the plane took off, it began descending and suddenly split into two, throwing him out followed by a loud explosion.

According to the medic, Ramesh said he found himself next to debris and walked to a nearby ambulance that brought him to the hospital.

The crash’s sole survivor escaped without life-threatening injuries

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

A doctor at a nearby hospital said he examined the survivor, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, who reportedly walked away after the crash.

“He was disoriented with multiple injuries all over his body,” Dr. Dhaval Gameti told The Associated Press. “But he seems to be out of danger.”

Ramesh called his relatives in Leicester, according to the BBC. He has a wife and “little boy” at home, said his cousin Ajay Valgi.

The survivor’s brother Nayan Kumar Ramesh told the BBC: “He said, ‘I have no idea how I exited the plane.’”

doesn't appear to explode upon landing or hitting the ground. Maybe exploded after hitting a building or structure once on the ground?

Seemed overloaded to complete the take off too.

This article says "Reports reveal Ramesh was seated in 11A — an emergency exit row." He was NOT seated in an emergency exit row (usually located over a wing). On the contrary, he was seated right next to a cabin door - THE DOOR primarily used to embark and debark passengers. The cabin door forward of this one and in front of row one is only used if the terminal has two jetways available and is generally for business-class passengers.

Would the ram air turbine (RAT) automatically deploy if there was a loss of electrical power from the two engines? Otherwise, why would it be deployed?

Not generally. there is a checklist to run through and that usually brings you to a manual deployment of the RAT. Don't know the specifics of the 787, but I don't think I've ever heard of an automatic rat.

There is no way that happened as written. Those doors are pressurized closed, even with engines failed there is enough PSI to keep it closed, there is usually a cover over the operating handle, then a very large handle that must be rotated a long way to open the door, then it swings in first to clear the frame, rotate and then pushes out, and it's heavy. If any passenger hat the mental fortitude and strength and foreknowledge to handle that in the 30 second between the time they realized a crash was happening, and the impact...well that would be one super human.

What is more likely is the aircraft broke apart upon impact right near that door, and just after it stopped moving, he jumped through the hole in the plane. He is confusing his timeline and the reporters are adding to his story. If I'm wrong, I'll eat some crow, but I don't think this story is accurate at face value.

AI is givng a different answer. What do you think?

quote:
Yes, the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) on a Boeing 787 is deployed automatically in certain emergency situations. Specifically, the RAT will deploy automatically if both engines fail or if all three hydraulic systems experience low pressure.
