Of course, he's gained instant notoriety, and the reality is that that notoriety can be traded on for cash and celebrity. That may be what this kid has in mind. Also, embarrassing the Army is a nice bonus for him.

Two U.S. officials said the soldier detained was Private 2nd Class Travis King, who had just been released from a South Korean prison where he’d been held on assault charges and was facing additional military disciplinary actions in the United States.

King, who’s in his early 20s, was escorted to the airport to be returned to Fort Bliss, Texas, but instead of getting on the plane he left and joined a tour of the Korean border village of Panmunjom, where he ran across the border.

Details about King, including his hometown and what additional charges he faced, were not immediately available. It was also unclear how he managed to leave the airport while he was being escorted.

Some people have some 'splaining to do. I'm guessing this guy's next address will be in Kansas for a while.

The North Koreans are not stupid. I think he will be used as a Propaganda piece and kept solely for that purpose. He is certainly no Mensa candidate, and the North Koreans have already figured he is too dumb to be a spy.

“The incident happened a day after King was escorted to a South Korean airport following his release from prison after he was jailed following an altercation with locals. He was due to fly back to the US and report to Fort Bliss, Texas.

But in a near-farcical twist, King was only taken as far as security - then left alone because his minder was unable to pass through with him without a ticket.

WTF!!!! A “prisoner under escort” wasn’t allowed to have his minder all the way to the boarding gate??????

Wait - mistake? stupid? or is he defecting? Sounds like he didn't have much of a future in the US.

So the guy who just got out of a South Korean prison, ran across the border and ended up in a North Korean prison, in order to avoid going to a US Military prison.

I'm good with it. They can feed and house him for us.

Not necessarily. If he were to claim to be trans then he'll probably be celebrated and put on a recruiting poster. Maybe even given a job a one of the defense secretaries.

A witness told CBS News the tour group had just visited a building in the area when 'this man gives out a loud 'ha ha ha', and just runs in between some buildings.'

'I thought it was a bad joke at first, but when he didn't come back, I realized it wasn't a joke, and then everybody reacted and things got crazy,' the witness said.

There was then a moment of panic before the rest of the group were escorted back to Freedom House, a border landmark, and asked to give statements before they taken away from the area by bus, the witness said.

A real smart one this King guy. He got them.

The Norks know this guy is a pathetic fool, he fits a profile of past defectors and deserters. All of them were idiots, rubes, simpletons who weren't very bright. King will be used in various movies to play the 'evil American', he'll be forced to watch and memorize all sorts of speeches and songs. He won't be coming out for awhile.

Nothing he was potentially facing here - even a murder charge - could possibly be as bad as time in a North Korean prison. Confused
