I like Will Smith as an actor. I grew up watching his movies/tv shows. A buddy of mine met him on the set of "I Am Legend" as an extra while he was serving in the Coast Guard. Told me they chatted for 10-15 mins and Smith seemed like a nice, down to earth kinda guy.

Fast forward 10-15 years and we all see how F-ed up his kids are and how his wife straight up cucks him and he goes along with it. Now this.

For someone who has brought varying degrees of charm, wit, calm, cool and collected under pressure, etc. to his acting roles, last night exposed him to be anything but. That's the kind of behavior I'd expect from a street thug who responds by bullying others with physical force, shouting and swearing because that's all he knows to get his message across.

I'm leaning in this direction as well.

For shits and giggles, I scanned some of the "trade publications" including Variety. Seems from my view that the majority of Hollywood is supporting Smith on this act of "defending his wife" bullshit. It looks like "they" are somehow turning this into a quasi "me-too" moment, throwing Rock under the bus.

It will be interesting in later weeks how guys like Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, Jerry Seinfeld, etc react to this shit. It seems comedians in general are supporting Rock.

Time for Will to cut the ties with Jada. She’s caused him much pain and humiliated him in public. Kids are all grow and both are extremely wealthy. He’s a young man and can do far better.

A failing awards show would never stage an unscripted segment that would get the whole world talking. I mean, you could look at the actors face and see the shock!

So Smith finally apologized to Rock. Damage control. I’d love to see Chris Rock’s next set in a club.

Of course nobody is saying that.

While it’s totally believable that they would do such a thing, this particular instance seems real for many reasons. Do you think the LAPD is in on it too?

More to the point, why are so many of you having a hard time believing this? Do that many people think Will Smith is some saint? Do you think he’s professional, that he has too much respect for himself or this awards show?

Just what is it that makes so many of you think Will Smith isn’t just a tantrum throwing little man-baby who slapped someone?

I am very surprised at the superficial way some of you are looking at this incident. There's no conspiracy. A failing awards show did not build a publicity stunt around a televised act of violence. This incident is highly embarrassing to the Academy. You have to look past your assumptions.

Will Smith:

"My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally."

"I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness. "

"I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my ‘King Richard’ family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us."

"I am a work in progress. Sincerely, Will."

I’m mixed on this one.

On the one hand, Rock disparaged/disrespected Smith’s wife. Who among us wouldn’t step forward in his wife’s defense? I’d say by and large, we’re failing our wives if we wouldn’t.

On the other hand, the public smacking (Smack? Really? Who smacks? Little girls? C’mon, man, go on and put a fist out there if you’re gonna do it, geeze.) was the wrong thing to do. Walk up there and tell Rock to stuff it / stow it / cut that crap out? That’s one thing. Go up and take a swing at him? Nah, not the right thing to do, right there in front of cameras and everybody.

Emotions took over? Yeah, I’ll buy that. Sort of. But as a professional (actor, athlete, engineer, banker, writer, babysitter, whatever else), taking a swing like that shows poor restraint. There’s a page posted in my office at work: “This is the way of reputation. Guard it well, for it tarnishes easily and polishes hard.”

For these two in particular, it’s just extra attention. Good attention? Probably not. But the acting world (and many others) thrive on attention, and this event certainly brought some.

As for Smith’s apology: my opinion is that it’s too wordy, which makes it look like pandering. Get to the point, Will. “I apologize for my behavior. It was inappropriate and not the right thing to do. I’ll work to do better.” Twenty words covers it all.

God bless America.

If it wasn't staged, then it's unbelievable that Smith was allowed to participate after the violence and Rock should litigate...where was security?

An open-handed slap light enough to not cause injury, but heavy enough to get the point across....and the whole world loses their crap.

I've seen everything from "lock him up for felony assault" to "He should have knocked him out".

Do we really live in such a refined society that a man cannot provide a minor correction to another man who just disparaged his wife, not just in public...but on an arguable global stage? I think the point got across, Chris was said to have declined any charges, and Will held back from any real physical harm.

Perhaps if more people had a healthy fear of having their cheeks slapped we'd have a much more polite society. I'm surprised at how many people thought it to be a hoax, and I'm surprised at how many people think it should be treated as some gravely violent act.

She doesn't. More info, I started to see it the other way.

As I stated on the last page, event security isn’t there for shit like this. Nobody on the security team would ever stop Will Smith from going on stage and none of them would remove him without show management telling them to.

Just FYI I’m saying this from my experience working in live events, including award shows, for 20 plus years.

Mr. Smith certainly lives in a glass house, but sometimes the wrong joke at the wrong time is just the last straw. Sometimes, a minor "slap" on the wrist from LE is worth it to defend one's "honor".

From what I've seen, in this thread and all over freakin' daily wire (drives me nuts), I support Will Smith's slap. He can afford the lawyer bill, and it sounds like nothing is going to come of it but more attention. Chris Rock is suddenly relevant and popular again, which works for him. I don't know if he was reading off a script or not, being a sarcastic asshole for a living I think he could have easily handed the Smith's their butts on a massive scale. I actually applaud him for stopping, letting it drop, and de-escelating the whole situation as he did. For a classless person, he showed a little after he realized he was across a personal line.
