I don't have a dog in this fight. However, both programs are exceptional and several steps ahead of everybody else in college football.

Statistically:
  • 'Bama has a 3 ppg edge on scoring
  • Clemson has a 1 ppg edge on points allowed
  • Couldn't be much closer in yards per game (3 yds)
  • 'Bama throws for ~50 ypg more and Clemson rushes for ~50 ypg more.
  • On defense, 'Bama is 5 ypg better on pass D and Clemson is 25 ypg better on rush D

They have faced 2 common opponents:
  • Louisville - 'Bama whipped them week 1 and Clemson whipped 'em worse in week 10
  • Texas A&M - Clemson squeaked by in week 2 and 'Bama whipped 'em in week 4. More on this later.

Both have played in at least 1 close game:
  • Georgia showed us that 'Bama is vulnerable. Crimson Tide was down by 14 in the 3rd quarter, and made a legendary come back to win by 7.
  • Clemson lead the Aggies from the end of the 1st quarter to the final play. They did allow the Aggies to stay in it and score 13 unanswered to make it a close game.
  • Syracuse lead Clemson nearly the entire game, but the Tigers outscored Syracuse 20-7 in the second half including a TD with 41 seconds left to pull off the come back.

Georgia and Syracuse seem like trade-offs of good teams getting tested and coming back. A&M being anywhere near Clemson doesn't bode well considering 'Bama won by 22 and never let them back in the game.

The odds services are unanimous that the Crimson Tide will win by 5.5 points. 'Bama wins and cover.

I'd like to see Clemson win, but Bama is just to talented & coached.

Is anybody not of the opinion that the playoffs delivered the two best teams in college football 2018? Anybody still holding onto their team that was left out?

  • And now, for the rest of the story: Behind Georgia's 7 point margin, A&M's 22 point point margin was the next-closest margin by any team playing Alabama this year. Miss St (24 point margin) and LSU (29 point margin) didn't even score against 'Bama during their games this year (A&M scored 23).

'Bama "whipped" ten opponents by a margin of 29 points or greater. In context, hanging 23 points on the Tide and losing by 22 points should be considered a pretty good game. Only Georgia and Arkansas (scored 31 points, but lost by 34) put up more points this year.

I'm not going to holler "Roll Tide" tonight, but I'm going to watch a tide roll a tiger out to sea. I predict 'Bama by 15 points.

Normally, I’d root for Clemson here, but if the Brent Key rumors are true, another ring would be a helpful recruiting tool.
