2BobTanner, I think you meant that they'd adjust their time zones westward. Arizona, which stays on MST all the time, might decide to move into the Pacific Time Zone, because PDT is the same time as MST. During the time that DST is in operation Arizona and California have the same time. The Pacific Time Zone is west of the Mountain Time Zone.

Or perhaps you were saying that the eastern boundaries of some Time Zones would be moved eastward to encompass territory that used to be in the adjacent Zone?

The whole thing is ridiculous. The Time Zones should stay the same and DST should die a quick death. The Sun has not changed, the rotation of the Earth has not changed. Don't mess with the clocks! (And stop doing it.)

I once heard a radio host propose summer temperature saving. Set your thermometer back 10 degrees in the summer and save it for the winter.

It just passed unanimously in the Senate. Furthermore, nearly two-thirds of Americans want to stop changing their clocks, according to a 2021 poll:

I vote we turn off daylight saving time at night, then turn it back on after daylight. That way everybody can be happy. That is what my granddaddy did with his kerosene lamps and it seemed to keep him going strong. Cool

There are X hours of sunlight in one day. DST does not "add sunlight hours."

Well…yes…but it does if you factor in “four simultaneous earth days!”

If those legislators in Washington really wanted to accomplish something they would require that each day should have twenty-six hours instead of twenty-four, the added two hours would be daylight hours.

Actually, it's not It is about time zones. The time doesn't change (how could it?), what changes is the time zone you are in, e.g. EST -> EDT -> EST -> EDT etc.

Which is another way of saying how I think of it, i.e., one's offset from UTC. Eastern time goes from UTC-5 (EST) to UTC-4 (EDT), while AZ is permanently UTC-7 (MST).

I agree with others wholeheartedly who have expressed a preference for permanent Standard Time, rather the DST. Having lived in AZ for 20 years now, I really enjoy following the seasons without jerky changes, and Standard Time seems to me to bracket the day/night hours perfectly. If passed as is, I wonder how it would affect AZ (grandfather in existing state laws, perhaps?). Right now I have to make adjustments when, e.g., calling a business on the East Coast. Let's see, are they 2 or 3 hours ahead of me? Permanent time would be good, but I prefer it be ST.

I like some more daylight in the evening just as much as the next guy, but... this is what Congress thinks it needs to spend time on? Confused

I'm all for getting rid of the time changes, the problem is what will it cost us. Congress always has to bury a shit ton or pork in every bill.

Of course it doesn't add sunlight hours, that statement is silly.

Perhaps phrased a better way, I enjoy more hours of sunlight during my waking hours. In the summer months, sunrise can be as early as 4:30 AM when observing standard time. I would venture to guess that most folks are not up at 4:30 AM, but are up at 8:30 - 9:00 PM and can thus take advantage of the sunlight during the time they are awake.

I wouldn't count any chickens just yet. My bet, this congress isn't competent enough to even handle something this ridiculously simple or no brainer.

I had forgotten that we tried it before for two years back in the 70s.

https://us.yahoo.com/news/perm...erica-052453819.html

“But 48 years ago, the U.S. tried the same thing – and public opinion of the change quickly deteriorated, leading lawmakers to rapidly reverse course. The U.S. is set up for a similar rude awakening if it makes daylight saving time permanent, according to David Prerau, an expert and author on DST.”

I don’t think there is any question that the vast majority people hate changing their clocks twice a year. What is unclear is whether people would prefer staying on DST or Standard time.

Well, I hope the House doesn't pass it. It may be simple, but it's wrong. Get rid of DST entirely and go back to what the railroads designed.

Then the sunrise will be 4:30 am in the summer and set mid afternoon in the winter. No thanks. DST all year please.
