On Monday, President Donald Trump claimed the United States "doesn't need anything from Canada" while announcing 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles and parts starting January 1, 2027, following trade negotiations that collapsed last Friday.
Economic ties remain extensive, with the two nations exchanging about $872 billion in goods and services last year, including nearly 20% of U.S. petroleum consumption and more than 80% of potash imports from Canada.
Political science professor Daniel Beland at McGill University called such claims "absolutely false," while Ambassador Pete Hoekstra previously stated, "We need potash" regarding critical Canadian supplies.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford suggested using exports as leverage in negotiations, though analysts warn such moves would harm the American economy ahead of November midterm elections.
The scheduled 2027 tariffs on auto parts could reshape cross-border manufacturing, creating uncertainty for industries reliant on the $126 billion in annual Canadian crude exports.

To think that this is a new issue and one that the US is the bad guy in is just false. Those that are opposed to anything the President does it is business as usual. Canada, like many other countries have been abusing our relationship (because our politicians) have allowed this to happen for decades.
Of course they want that to continue. But the time has long since past that this injustice needs to be corrected. There is no reason the US should pay on both ends of trade with other nations. Even allies.

As a dual citizen, I could not agree more with your statement! I have no problem with what our government is doing with Canada. They are quickly turning into a Chinese State. As somebody born in Canada I am mortified to see what is going on there.

We Are Very Close to Clinching a Massive Deal on Oil

It’s an underreported story, given this administration’s 10,000-mile-per-hour pace, but the Trump administration is close to sealing a massive deal for Venezuelan oil that could double U.S. oil reserves overnight. President Donald Trump's administration is laying the legal groundwork to resist potential congressional investigations should Democrats capture the House in November, CNN reported Saturday.

The president's teams are advancing expansive claims of executive privilege that could shield outside advisers and even their identities from lawmakers.
