Supreme Court Chief Justice Removes Block on White House Ballroom Construction

The order is in place until the justice, or the Supreme Court, rules otherwise.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts on Aug. 21 said the Trump administration can proceed with construction of a new White House ballroom.

The lower court order “is hereby stayed pending further order of The Chief Justice or of the Court,” Roberts said.

Iran TV Says 'Kill' Barron Trump, Claims $10 Million Bounty

Iranian media linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has escalated its threats against President Donald Trump's family, airing a video on state TV that purportedly tracks the movements of his 20-year-old son, Barron Trump.

Separate reports also claim a $10 million bounty has been placed on his head.

The video, reported Sunday by news outlet Al Bawaba, appeared on IRGC-linked media and Iran's state-run Channel 3 and carried the title, "Where to kill Barron Trump?"

According to Al Bawaba, the production purported to reveal information about Barron Trump's location and movements, presenting the president's youngest son as being within reach of potential attackers.

The outlet also reported claims of a $10 million bounty. The official status of the purported bounty could not immediately be independently confirmed.

The latest threat follows an earlier IRGC-linked propaganda campaign against first lady Melania Trump.

In July, the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News Agency distributed a video titled "Where to Kill Melania?!" that discussed locations she frequents in New York and her shopping habits. The video alleged details about her Secret Service protection.

It encouraged would-be attackers to exploit supposed vulnerabilities.

The video concluded with a direct warning to the president's son: "Barron Trump, wait for us!" The Secret Service said it was aware of the threatening material and investigates threats against those under its protection.

The increasingly personal threats are part of a broader Iranian campaign directed at the president since the outbreak of the U.S.-Iran war.

In July, a massive billboard appeared in Tehran's Islamic Revolution Square depicting Donald Trump apparently dead in a coffin. Written prominently across the display in English were the words, "We Kill Trump."

Other banners reportedly depicted American flag-draped coffins alongside images of Donald Trump, Melania Trump, and members of their family.

Iranian-linked media also previously circulated a video titled "Where to Kill Trump?!" purporting to map Trump's motorcade routes between airports and his residences in Florida and New York.

The Secret Service confirmed it was examining that material.

The threats represent a dramatic escalation from Tehran's long-standing vows of retaliation against Donald Trump and former U.S. officials over the 2020 killing of IRGC Quds Force Cmdr. Qasem Soleimani.

Supreme Court sides with Trump administration on mail voting restrictions ahead of midterms


WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court sided with the Trump administration Monday in a case over President Donald Trump's executive order restricting mail-in voting, though it remains unclear how much can be implemented before the fast-approaching midterm elections.

The decision leaves room for additional court challenges that could further slow Trump's order, and other similar cases have already been filed. The U.S. Postal Service laid out how it would implement the order last week, but time is running short to impose major changes with some states beginning to send mail ballots to voters in just a few weeks.

The Supreme Court's conservative majority didn't decide the legality of Trump's order, instead ruling that states who sued did not have the legal right to challenge it.

"The Court's disposition of this application does not mean that any measure taken by the Government to implement the Order will necessarily be lawful. On that score, time will tell," the majority wrote in an unsigned order.

The three liberal-leaning justices publicly dissented, with Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson writing that the rule "lets another shoe drop in the Kafkaesque nightmare that our precedents have been steadily creating for certain plaintiffs who seek to bring election-related challenges."

New York Attorney General Letitia James foreshadowed more legal wrangling, calling the decision a "painful setback" but vowing it would "not be the final word."

The court's order opens a path for the administration to begin action to restrict mail voting, but it also could lead to a bevy of potential further litigation that could freeze the federal government again, all starting 10 days before the first mail ballots in the nation are scheduled to be sent to overseas and military voters from North Carolina.

"This is just the first inning of a very fast nine-inning game," said Derek Muller, a law professor at Notre Dame University.

Trump fights mail-in voting despite its growing popularity

Mail balloting has long been a favorite target for Trump, who has claimed that it breeds fraud despite strong evidence to the contrary and his own use of the voting method.

Trump's executive order, signed in March, calls on his administration to create lists of eligible voters and orders the U.S. Postal Service to deliver mail ballots only to people on those lists. New requirements released Friday would forbid the Postal Service from sending mail ballots from any state that does not comply with Trump's order.

Democratic officials in 23 states and the District of Columbia sued to block the order. They argued that the Constitution gives states and Congress the power to run elections, and Trump's changes could lead to chaos and partisan abuse.

"The consequences of allowing such transformative changes to take effect so close to this fall's elections would be extreme," attorneys for the states wrote. Dozens of state and local election officials weighed in, asking the justices to leave the order frozen while election preparations are already underway.

A judge in Massachusetts blocked the plan for the midterm elections in those states. An appeals court upheld her decision. She later granted a second order blocking it nationwide, another remaining stumbling block for Trump administration.

The Justice Department appealed to the Supreme Court on procedural grounds in late July, arguing that the states sued too soon. They also pointed to another ruling out of Washington, where a judge allowed Trump's order to proceed. An appeals court backed that decision, while still leaving room for future court action if the changes are implemented.

Federal attorneys argued that the Massachusetts order "blocks the government's ability to finalize and implement the President's proposed policies to promote election integrity for the upcoming federal elections in November."

A dozen Republican-leaning states supported the federal government in their own appeal before the high court, saying states would have input on the final voter lists.

The Supreme Court has previously ruled against Trump-backed arguments on mail-in ballots, finding in June that states can count ballots that arrive after Election Day. That case was decided after full briefing and arguments, rather than on the court's emergency docket.

Trump has blamed mail voting — without credible evidence — for his loss to Democrat Joe Biden in 2020. He has promoted the proposed changes in his executive order as safeguards to keep non-U.S. citizens from voting.

He's also repeatedly pressed for the passage of the legislation that requires proof of citizenship to vote. Noncitizen voting has been shown to be rare, and is a felony that can be punishable by deportation.

Using mail ballots has become increasingly popular with voters of both parties, with about 30% of all ballots cast that way during the 2024 presidential election, according to federal data. The process also is secure. A 2025 Brookings Institution study found only about four cases of fraud out of every 10 million mail ballots cast.

David Becker, a former justice department lawyer who co-wrote a book debunking Trump's 2020 election lies, said the high court created "pure chaos leading up to the midterm elections, waiting weeks after an administration filing, and just days before mail ballots go out, to completely rewrite the rules."

Becker added he expects the Trump order to ultimately be blocked in the new legal process the court decision effectively greenlit.

Supreme Court Clears Path for Vote-by-Mail Restrictions Ahead of November Election

A majority of the justices voted to let executive order 14399 take effect while litigation continues.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Aug. 24 ruled that President Donald Trump may—for the time being—enforce his executive order restricting voting by mail ahead of the November midterm elections that will determine control of Congress.

The high court’s unsigned order in favor of the Trump administration allows the federal government to enforce the president’s executive order 14399, dated March 31, which aimed to tighten mail-in voting rules in 23 Democratic-led states and the District of Columbia, which challenged it in court.
The executive order requires federal agencies to develop state-by-state lists of verified U.S. citizens of voting age. It directs the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to begin the process of creating new government regulations about how mail-in and absentee ballots are handled, publish the proposed regulations to allow for public comment, and eventually publish the final, binding regulations.

The executive order forbids the postal service from sending mail ballots to anyone not on the verified citizen lists. It also requires the USPS to impose new envelope design and barcode standards for election mail.

A federal district court had blocked the executive order’s enforcement in the 23 states and in the nation’s capital. The new Supreme Court ruling stays that lower court order while the litigation plays out.

Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented.

I would certainly hope so!

Our Governor in Utah put out a statement that this ruling does not affect this state. We're 100% mail-in. The statement says another ruling is still in place.

Utah has strongly resisted giving voter information to the federal government. I believe the state's position is regarding privacy and states' rights rather than to protect election fraud.

As was predicted by me -- although I thought it would be Thursday -- the plaintiffs in the various cases challenging the Trump EO on postal regulations for mail-in ballots have now begun to file amended complaints to challenge the Final Rule promulgated by the Postal Service last Friday.

The previously challenged the lawfulness of the EO and the directions given to various agencies. Now they are challenging the Postal Service regulation.

This is only as to Sec. 3 of the EO which told the Postal Service to create "Participation Lists" and start the process of creating a uniform ballot envelope to be used by all states who seek to have ballots delivered by mail.

The cases in D.C. have been amended but will remain before Judge Carl Nichols.

There are two cases in Boston.

But we could see additional cases filed in other districts now as well.

Update: One has to wonder if the reason the Post Office went ahead and created the rules, procedures, uniform ballot envelope was to give the judge something to stand on once SCOTUS stopped the first Order she gave which was found invalid.
