Maybe because the mortality rate for H1N1 was .02%, CV-19 is 2%. In the U.S. that would be about 6.6M deaths vs. 66k deaths if left unchecked. Also H1N1 was about half as contagious as CV-19. When a disease starts posting scary numbers people tend to pay more attention.

The local store opens an hour early now for seniors (over 60). Went there today to see how the retail experience went - it was surprisingly normal. Well, some stockouts, but the store people were friendly and helpful. Most of the shoppers were calm, sort of fixated on their lists. Most, but not all apparently - the checker remarked how nice it was to have a normal chat; apparently the lady ahead of me in line was overly stressed, and was kind of snippy with the checker/bagger.

A little politeness and humor goes a long way. I am very glad for the retail folks staying out there interacting with the public - like I told her, without someone to check us out, the rest of the store would be pointless. She smiled and I think she appreciated the comment.

Same here, only I'm a 72 yo VN vet. The "social distancing" thing is the easiest. I'm glad they came up with a politically correct name, instead of the "GTF away from me" that I've used for years.

Me? Well at this time frameI am going through another treatment cycle (Doxacycline) for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. I have had it several times, and cannot seem to get rid of it.

Last fall, I went through 2 -21 day doses of antibiotics, it still did not go away. My doctor told me if this current regiment of anti biotics doesn't cure me, then I need to go to an Infectious Disease specialist.

Which is the last thing I want to do in this time frame. And I am in the group most likely to suffer greatly from a Covid-19 infection.

Locally, there was the first case of Covid-19, about 15 miles away, patient is in the hospital. Worried about my daughter in law who is a nurse there, and my grandaughter and son maybe being infected due to daughter in law's exposure.

Some have downplayed this virus and some have criticized the extreme measures taken. As serious as it is, I think this is a test, consider public panic if we had a national disaster such as an accidental nuclear bomb explosion, the eruption of a super volcano.

But I am wishing all of Sig Forum the strength to get through this.

Sure. Scary numbers based on what exactly? Let me know when we hit 60,000,000 reported cases in the U.S. Until then? It's all just bloviating, corn-hole, male bovine fecal matter. Take precautions? You bet. Run for the hills? For what? Swine Flu was a blip on the radar and this country didn't skip a beat. My wife and I are doing fine in the MH. We are both in our mid 60's, have COPD, but are not on oxygen. We get a little nervous about the hoarding going on/empty shelves in the supermarket, but so far it's not too bad. Our kids, and family are pestering us to come back home to MI. Quite honestly though, we both think we are better off here in sunny warm FL for the next three weeks. I know when we get back home, it will be hard to insist that nobody come visit us, but we will be very vigilant about that, and hope that they all understand, and respect our wishes.

Yikes! Sorry to hear that.

I learned of ticks and RMSF when I was briefly in North Carolina on a project. When the weather started warming up I mentioned to some friends I'd made there it'd be nice to go for a walk in the woods. They looked at me in horror and told me about the ticks and RMSF.

That put an end to that idea.

Up here the ticks carry mostly Lyme Disease, and it doesn't appear to be as prevalent as RMSF is in ticks in other areas of the country.

Cannot complain, we are fortunate. My mom and dad are being smart, but not worried and keeping busy. Both in late 70s but healthy which gives me some peace of mind.

My 12 year old is going a bit stir crazy and I’m helping him sort through all the negative crap on social media, news, etc. His friends are the worse - 12 year old drama and exaggeration. Fixed it by taking his phone, giving him some books and exercising, walking, paddle boarding together. The kids are the ones being hit by all the negative and bs messaging and rumors.

She’s scared to death she’s going to get the virus and has not left the house in a week and a half.

It might not be crazy to call her doctor and ask if he thinks it is better to come in now or put the recheck off for two or three months. He may either be able to put her mind somewhat at ease about going in or suggest waiting.

Maybe visiting via FaceTime, Skype, or Zoom might help. Our kids’ school is using Zoom for classes and it looks like a good way for multiple folks to meet without being in the same place.

The rest of us old fogies in my family have been doing email check ins to stay in touch as a group (my mom, five siblings, and myself).

So far so good. Homeschooling 3 kids and dealing with a newborn is kinda stressful at times but all things considered we’re doing good.

I started writing a journal again and I’m sure it’s going to be wild in a few years going back and reading my journal entries during this.

I heard that things are so bad in California now that the only people allowed out on the streets are those that have to poop.

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

Says who? The 'experts' who have been spectacularly wrong every time they've weighed in on an infectious disease? At this point in time we don't have the slightest idea what the mortality rate will be for this bug in 'this' country'. But I for one am damn sick and tired of the 'experts' and media trying to insight terror in the entire population of this country.

I've had 3 cases of Lyme disease, treated with Doxacycline...I've had 3 cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever...treated with Doxacycline..2 extra doses of 21 days last fall trying to get rid of RMSF..and now this episode.

The antibiotic used is harsh...much worse than penicillin...I think I am picking up all these tick bites at my kennels situated in a wooded part of my yard.

Add Covid-19 in the equation, something else to be concerned about. I have a 95 year old Mom, who is in a seniors apartment...management asked them not to go out...and I asked Mom, what about people visiting.

Then, myself...older age bracket,67, wife babysits grand daughter, who's Mom is a nurse at hospital...infectious disease center...

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is like having a severe cold...aches, And artrithis type joint flareups, extreme fatigue, isatible thirst...some symptoms maybe would overlap the flu.

Agreed. I'm in the big fat nothingburger camp at this point.
As to the bogus fear mongering percentages:
Confirmed cases in the US as of right now 43,022. Deaths attributed to this virus 530.
1.23%
I'd guess that we have at minimum 3x the number of people with this virus than what we've tested (mayby 10x more) so if you use that metric then the number of sick people equal 129,000 with still only 530 dead. That drops it down yet again to .41%.
People aren't succumbing to this as bad as the media is having us believe.
