I have to wonder, was the fact that they had to put up a 40 year old boxer vs. a talented, but non-boxer UFC fighter, a sign that the 'end is nigh' for professional boxing? While UFC is selling PPV pretty consistently*, what was the last boxing match that had this kind of appeal? (Mayweather/Pacquiao?) * This gravy train could end quickly if Dana does not get his house in order. Mcgregor just needed to stand Mayweather up with a good uppercut when he kept bending forward. One good leg fueled haymaker uppercut would have sent Mayweather reeling. Mcgregor just didn't have the stamina to fight Floyd for the distance. He has the skill and style, when he had the energy his flip flop style was frustrating Floyd, but his arms got heavy in the 4th and his footwork got lazy. By the 7th he was done. I am impressed he lasted 10 rounds without going down.

Then they should have let him get knocked the f out. $740,000,000? And nobody even hit the mat? Stop the fight because somebody got too tired to keep on? This baffles me. That's not how boxing works. The idea is not to see the other guy pummeled to the point of unconsciousness. In many ways, boxing is a much more brutal sport to the long term health of the fighter than MMA is. Boxers are constantly getting hit in the head over and over again sometimes for over 30 minutes straight. At that point in the match, it was clear that Mayweather was hitting McGregor at will. That match was over; the winner was obvious. The ref did his job and ended it to protect the fighter. It's not like McGregor was going to suddenly surprise Mayweather and bring him to the ground and choke him out. This is boxing. ~Alan Acta Non Verba NRA Life Member (Patron) God, Family, Guns, Country Men will fight and die to protect women... because women protect everything else. ~Andrew Klavan

It's like the Refs calling what was slated to be and potentially was the best Superbowl ever, with 2min left in the 4th after a super solid game, an even game throughout most of it, just because one team was looking pretty ragged there toward the end, yet no one was in real threat of a concussion, or any severe injuries the time it was called. It's just too safe now. Primarily - it's that right there that's everything wrong with Boxing. Like war with far too many ROEs, and a thousand other similar scenarios. The game itself has jumped the shark / been watered down too much / too worried about liability / etc. It's become more like a mega hyped up sparring match. Blue balls, is one fitting expression. (I've since watched the whole thing, and have no issue with Mayweather being the winner, nor do I really think McGregor would've lasted much longer, but such is the game, sometimes you shoot your wad too early, have inadequate endurance, and get KTFO). The world was robbed of ever knowing how it actually would have ended. Even as a McGregor fan and no real fan of Mayweather, seeing the shit-talker get KO'd (or prevail, which he didn't) is what - I'd bet - 90% of the world watching wanted and deserved to see. IMO.

I can concede that the fight was stopped a few seconds too soon. Mayweather should have been allowed to go ahead and knock the guy out. It was a weird fight that made McGregor look like a competent counter puncher with no power. Floyd walking straight in with his hands up was a very unexpected development that we have never really seen before. The fight was what boxing is all about and was entertaining. Folks needing a gladiator type experience should certainly stick with MMA.

Maybe not gladiator...but for 740 million bucks, I expect somebody to get at least knocked on their ass, once. Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here. My favorite quotes for the night.."no wrestling" and "stop means stop". I thought Byrd managed okay. He wasn't going to let Mayweather get in the knockout punch though. Everybody got paid...yeah.

Reportedly, the McGregor camp was happy to hear Byrd was selected to referee the fight, because he was known to be a bit more lenient about clinching. The "no wrestling" quote...I actually remember him saying, "I don't want to grapple with you," was chickenshit. It was like Byrd was Mayweather's uncle or something. During all of pre-fight instructions, he looked directly at McGregor. I was prepared for the worse from Byrd from that point. I would also point to Mayweather's repeated tactic of turning his back and ducking down during several of the rounds. My brother said that it looked like a deliberate attempt to get Conor to punch him in the back of the head, and thereby incur the $1 million fine. Anyone who has fought in combat sports knows that you simply cannot do that (turn your back). Mayweather was finally warned after doing it 4 or 5 times. At one point, Mayweather turned his back and bent down at the waist in a corner. For reasons that still escape me, Byrd went after McGregor and backed him out to the middle of the ring, warning him about something. I thought he was awful. _______________________________________________________ despite them

I've never seen a losing fighter so upbeat and gregarious as CM talking with Mayweather in the ring afterwards. Not unexpected with a man from the land of happy wars and sad love. Set the controls for the heart of the Sun.

That was a good stoppage. McG wasn't doing anything to protect himself. He couldn't keep his hands up. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.
