I just bought a Google Pixel 3A that comes in at about the same price point as the new Apple. I'm not sure how it is impacting the Pixel's big brother (4) but I think it is nice to see a good phone that is not $800 plus dollars. Thanks Apple and Google.

Come on now, let's be fair. I am an Android fanboy (kind of), but when I left "my lane", I did so to compliment what Apple has done with this particular phone. Though a bunch of people will attack it over what they view as its weaknesses, I truly believe its positives will far outweigh them and that this phone will be very well received by the people who matter...the people looking to buy a value based iPhone. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom. True, you did. Didn't know about the new Pixel 3A Bytes mentioned. (As I noted in stickman458's thread: I haven't been following Android developments since I became an Apple fanbois.) I'd hazard a guess this is Apple's response to that and what is probably a somewhat weak market for their usual fare. In fact I wonder if they didn't have this thing on the drawing board for a while and then, when they saw how things were going, decided to pull the trigger on it? "America is at that awkward stage. Shame you couldn't have waited another month or so, as the Google Pixel 4a is set to debut, and it appears to be a nice update of the 3a that was unquestionably a terrific phone and a homerun for Google hardware. The 3a and 3a XL's have outsold the Pixel 3's big time, and have somewhat refocused the cellphone market on value over flagship specs. I really think Apple jumping in now with the SE2 is a reaction to just how successful the Pixel 3a and 3a XL have been, and how Samsung and OnePlus have also seen great success in marketing mid-market, more value based options. Again, I think this was a smart move by Apple to jump into this segment. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom. Every man should have several guns. It also adds WIFI 6 and doubles the optional storage vs the "8". It does drop the headphone jack vs the previous SE. Glad to see the continued support for the smaller / cheaper phone, this will likely sell pretty well. Collecting dust.

Nice to have the WiFi 6 update, but IMO the camera is what's going to sell this phone. For $399 (starting) you get an iPhone SE2 with the iPhone 11 Pro main camera sensor, arguably one of the best cameras on the market. The SE2 also includes the A13 Bionic chip, the same chip in Apple's current flagships. So no one has to sacrifice speed or camera quality when they buy the cheaper phone. Dated design ascetics or not, this thing offers a lot of positives at a very attractive price point. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom. I'm a weird duck where it comes to phones (*), I guess. All these specs are wonderful and all, but what I most want out of a phone is that it work well as a phone. That means acquire and hold a signal well, and have good call quality. Of secondary, but nearly equal importance: That it has "reasonable" per-charge battery life, the display be readable in bright sunlight, the form-factor (size) be usable--neither too large nor too small, and that it be able to handle a bit of physical abuse. Everything beyond those things, while nice to have, comes a distant third--including the camera. (*) Ok, maybe in other respects, too ![]() "America is at that awkward stage. Looking forward to this!!! Will likely dump my XR for it. I like the smaller size and prefer the thumb unlock to the FaceID. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If you remember correctly he was having problems with two iPhones at the same time. Even if he were using android phones it’s pretty obvious what the problem was. ——————————————— The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Psalm 14:1

Maybe not weird, but definitely not the demo cellular companies are chasing. I read a study about a year ago that noted the quality of the camera on a phone being the #1 most important attribute to buyers. That's where I think Google came up with the plan to market the Pixel 3a. The phone has adequate internals to run what you need to run daily (nothing flagship level), a decent sized battery that gets you through an entire day on a charge, and a nice 1080p OLED display that looks fantastic. But what put the phone way over the top was bundling Google's exceptional image capture and processing software with the same camera sensor found in the flagship Pixel 3. So again, for the majority of buyers, they give up very little capability buying a $399 phone while getting exceptional image capabilities (just like the Apple SE2). I personally hope we see a whole lot more of these 'value' offerings by everyone in the market. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom. I thought the Touch ID (fingerprint) was great, until I got a Face ID phone. I much prefer it to the Touch ID because it is much faster, unless you're wearing a mask all the time. ![]() When in doubt, mumble

Personally I think Apple realizes not everyone is falling for their "pay $1k for a phone" business model.

FaceID is a gigantic pain in the ass when your phone is on the dash mount and you have to unlock it to skip to the next song or when you try to use Apple Pay and the reader is in a weird location which is a lot of the time. I’ll take the thumb any day. I found it to be faster. Pull the phone out of your pocket with your thumb on the button and it is unlocked before you can even look at the screen. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. I assume this new SE will support Qi charging. That might make my wife give up her beloved first gen SE. When she sees me lay my 11 Pro on the charger, she has to comment about it every time. I don’t know if it’s the A13 chip or something else, but the battery in the 11 Pro is simply amazing. I could go all week without charging if I wanted to. If this new phone gets the same battery life, I think it will be a huge success. I think the 2020 SE camera will not have night mode photography and also the small 720p LCD display. Those are the two main drawbacks, imo. However this is GREAT for the phone market overall! Many, incl me, are sick of these $1000+ phones.. Hopefully we will even more sub $400 phones coming out. I run a Pixel 3a XL daily ($356 from Amazon new, was on sale) and it exceeded my expectations in every way. What an excellent value for sub-$400. Camera quality is just simply great. Night sight is crazy voodoo craft. Hopefully this SE2 and the 3a before it continue to pressure all makers to shore up this mid range segment.

The Apple website says the battery life is about the same as an iPhone 8. Anyone have an 8? How is the battery life? My current phone (Android) is pushing four years old and I still get 24+ hours out of the battery. I don't watch a lot of video, but do use Whatsapp, translators and email a fair bit.

Never understood why it had to be one or the other. Removing functionality from a phone which is sure to annoy some customers, especially in a phone costing $1k+, seems imprudent to me. Interestingly, one of the features of the Google 3a that gets the most positive feedback is the rear mounted fingerprint sensor. I recognize this is so two years ago, but its still my favorite implementation of a way to access a phone. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom.
