3 wire cords have the ground in the middle of the two hots. Just as the ground wire is in the middle of romex.

4 wire cords are color coded (black, red ,white and green).

Should be no excuse for them to have hooked one up incorrectly, unless you have no training whatsoever.

Ample voltage and continuity tests were conducted to determine that the power cord was improperly wired in the back of the dryer.
A hot leg was terminated to the neutral terminal and the neutral was terminated to the line terminal. Once the unit was powered on line voltage and current were both applied and sent through the chassis of the dryer and dryer duct. The dryer duct then was in direct contact with the washing machine, leading to an instant ground fault causing an electrical discharge, known as an “arch flash”. This in turn vaporized the dryer duct, back and side of the washing machine and part of the wall as well.

If available, I would like to see a picture of the wiring, as I feel the wording is a little off.

Reversed hot and neutral shouldn't have energized the dryer vent.
Reversed hot and ground would have.

Ground and neutral shouldn't have a direct path inside the dryer.
If they did, there'd be no reason to require 4 wire installations.

And if the dryers hot (venting) contacting the washer cabinet (ground) tripped its 20 A breaker, than that is a little concerning.

That's a BIG negative.

No its not, if you have the ground wire connected to one of the hot leads it's a dead short and that breaker will trip instantly.

Nope.

How do you think 120 volt works?
The thing is wired to 120 volts instead of 240.

Dead short would be hot to ground with nothing in between.

your saying the exact same thing, I have been wiring for 40 years I think I know how it works. but thats ok you have your way and I have mine.

I don't see how you think we are saying the same thing.

You say the breaker would trip, if the circuit was wired properly.
I disagree.

There's no dead short, as there's electrical components between the two wires.

This. Plus usually the crimped on connectors are usually colored too silver for neutral brass for hots, not always though.

I'm assuming it's a 3-wire circuit and he meant ground.

Wondering what happened at the end of the install.

Most installers would have gotten it running before they left. Most of the time I've had appliances installed, not only do they do that, the installers want me to sign that the job was completed acceptably before they go.

The delivery took about 10 minutes. The guys came removed the incorrect dryer, replaced it with this faulty one, I signed the paper, and they left.

I assume either/both you and/or the installer must have fired it up before deciding the install was done. Did it work then?

I discourage mentioning your perception of house wiring. Your electrician stated the wiring was fine. Take that to the bank.

I would also take a look around, to identify any other damage the short circuit may have caused.

Finally, I recommend recording any calls between you and Lowes about the incident.

Thank goodness you guys are O.K.

So here's the update. But first, some background of events.

Dealing with the delivery contractor logistics company to get any of my requests fulfilled was a nightmare. They started a claims process with virtually no communication about status or anything like that. (Btw, in the back of my mind, I kept in mind claims don't always work out in the favor of the damaged party).

So for 2 weeks, I was nice as can be. I didn't bug them unnecessarily etc. Then, my wife started losing her mind between not having a kitchen (it's being gutted and remodeled) and not having a washer and dryer. So I call lowes and say drop off the washer and dryer, since the claim is in the works.

The next day, the delivery company shows up with the stuff and brought it into the garage to take into the laundry room. I asked the guy if he'd push the on button before he left, just in case shit went screwy again. He refused. I said I need someone to test it out, or take it back. The sonofabitch said, "Fuck this shit" and told his delivery buddy to "pack this shit up, we're getting the fuck outta here." While storming down my driveway and throwing a hissy fit.

At this point, after dealing with near electrocution, the fire, terrible service, and not having a freaking kitchen or a way to clean clothes, and now this fuckstick disrespecting me in my own home, I lost my fucking mind. I start yelling at this guy as he blows me off with a hand wave in my own driveway, and then roughly puts the appliances back into the truck. My head exploded.

BTW, I have video/audio of all this from my cameras.

At this point I called the delivery people and the lowes manager. No answer, so I left voicemails telling them what the fuck just happened. Not only did they almost do us harm, but now their employee just cursed at me in my own home.

I got on the internet and found the emails for the CEOs for both lowes and XPO logistics, I also found every single email for directors, marketing, HR, customer services, janitors etc...I composed an email to the people I've been dealing with, but I cc'd ALL of these other people as well (About 25-30 people, many of which had no business in the matter). I had it. I said I'd go to local and national news, blow them up on social media, BBB, chamber of commerce, and even pursue litigation and send incessant emails to everyone everyday until the issue was addressed. I was even prepared to hang out in Lowe's and tell customers about my experience.

Oh, and I attached the video of their employee cursing at me and blowing me off while roughly handling my appliances.

Well, it worked.
That afternoon, I had a bunch of big wigs contact me from both companies, including the Lowe's CEO secretary. I let them ALL know about the original issue and what has been going on since, etc. I also let them know what sort of company they are partnering with.

A VP from the logistics company contacted me, who was very sympathetic, and then offered me $500 and some Lowe's gift cards and drop the claim to make this all go away. I said I'd think about it. Called back and said nope, I want everything I detailed in the original email, which came to an amount of around $1,800. (Price of washer and dryer, electrical work, repaint the laundry room, and a fire extinguisher). Also, I have no desire to use Lowe's anymore, so fuck those cards.

She agreed to my request and the check is in the mail. Since I got the washer and dryer free and a little bit extra, I'm buying my grand mom some new appliances that she could use (And not running out to buy a buncha guns Wink ).

A new delivery company delivered the goods accompanied by the Lowe's Regional Manager (He even wore his vest) and a real deal electrician to install and test everything. Glad they got to view the fucked up wiring first hand. They both remarked how they've never seen anything like it (vent tube explosion etc).

These guys couldn't have been any nicer, so I wrote a nice letter to the higher ups about how thorough, friendly, and professional they were.

So, it all worked out. Glad this shit is over.

I doubt if those guys were Lowes employees, they were probably subcontractors which is why they had no fucks to give.

Well yeah, they're the delivery guys. XPO Logistics...they set up the dryer with faulty electrical and were handling the claim, however Lowe's is attached to them.

Keep those security cameras focused in case the delivery guy (likely fired) returns after hours.
