Never miss an opportunity to be Batman! |
Well, I guess I am a hoarder. I have two freezers. I bought a smaller one to take up the items I couldn't keep in my counter deep kitchen refrigerator/freezer. Later I bought a bigger one for deer meat and such. I view only have 30 days of supplies as being barely prepared and having 90 days as only marginally prepared. I guess I am a double hoarder, I bought one of those huge Sam's Club packs (think family of four for six months size) of TP........in late October 2019. No I am not giving it away. Everyone else had the same opportunity to prepare as I did. I also got a generator so I can power my refrigerator and two freezers but that was after what happened below. Due to two long power blackouts (7 to 14 days, one in the summer, the other in winter) a couple years ago, I upgraded my preparations: hiking stove (multi fuel type) fuel for stove, small wood burning stove and decent amount of wood pellets and wood to burn, camp toilet (power was out, no water pressure), etc. I keep a couple barrels of water in the basement, rotate it out every year and use water tablets for it. There is a big difference between someone who has prepared and someone who is panic buying. It is funny that when the shit hits the fan, the grasshoppers always call the ants who have prepared "hoarders".

And we have a winner! Choices man, aren't they great. Everyone accepts what level of risk they want. A few people mentioned Mormons. I chatted with one a few months ago, now those guys plan for a rainy day. I settled somewhere between Mormon and a can of beans in my cabinet. Happy and content with my supplies. I do wish I had a freezer though. Bought a side by side counter depth fridge, looks good and fits my kitchen better than the old one, but I have it stuffed so full I can't fit a box of Hot Pockets in it. So if I went out 2 weeks ago and bought all that toilet paper while Grandmas and single moms where driving all over looking, Then hey I'm just doing what the heck I want and you are cool with that. I mean Granny and single mom had time to prepare, right? I think buying an extra freezer and helping empty the shelves faster is the same thing or worse. I mean you're at home you can jump in the shower after you shit or you can buy Hillary's book and wipe with that garbage. Just seems like a dick move to me. And like i said the poll was shit. Wish I could delete it and my life the last couple weeks. I might be addicted to the hokey pokey again, better turn myself around ----------------- Silenced on the net, Just like Trump

Cheni, I don't know what's going on in your life, but many are getting screwed over. You aren't alone, I hope the best for you and yours. I suggest picking up the phone and checking in with some friends and family. They will be happy to hear your voice, and it might just be what they needed. Win/win, get your mind off all this madness and make their days. Be well. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

Here in Northwest Oregon, we are concerned with winter storms that can down trees and cause mudslides cutting areas off for up to a week or more. We are reminded that we are overdue for a 9.0 earthquake. We also have active volcanoes. I watched Mt. St. Helens blow its top from a few miles to the Southwest. We lived in Southwest Florida with hurricanes. We have always had around a month's worth of food and water for emergencies. We were prepared with our two freezers that are sixteen years old and full. Panic buying is rushing out to buy a freezer and supplies after the issue hits. Hoarding is rushing out and buying multiple freezers and a year's worth of toilet paper. U.S. Army, Retired

Reading comprehension, really is NOT your strong suit is it???? The OP's question was: "Question: So now I wonder, Is running out and buying a freezer at the beginning of a pandemic scare is Hoarding and okay?" MY OPINION (not yours or anyone elses, which everyone is entitled to have their own and what the OP is asking in the first place) was: Buying A freezer was fine, going out and buying 7 wasn't. "With TP, I'd say more than a 3-4 month supply at anytime is hoarding, same goes for food..... " Rhinoso, I'm ANSWERING THE OP'S QUESTION. I don't know what your deal is, but you need to find a hobby or READ the thread instead of shitting on everyone else's threads on a daily basis with BS that isn't even relevent. I suggest you look up the definition of what a hoarder is! A hoarder is someone who buys more stuff than they could possibly even use before it degrades, rots, spoils, or is past it's useful life. I'm all for people being well prepared, or a prepper, but not people hoarding more stuff than they can use in it's lifetime. That being said, I bought TP and Paper towels the end of February because I was at Costco, both 24 pack of Charmin TP and 12 pack of Paper towels were $4 or 5 off, and I try to go to Costco every 6-8 weeks because I hate going there as it's a very busy store, so I probably had about 40 rolls of TP and 18 rolls of paper towels on St. Patricks day when this whole thing got going. For my family of 2, I still have 25-30 rolls of TP and 12 rolls of paper towels and haven't bought any, as well as water. There's plenty on the yachts I manage also, if I needed any, anyways. I normally keep a good stock of everything due to being in a hurricane area, my job, and situation. How much TP and Paper Towels do people really go through a day????? I was Specifically talking about TP. Regular hoarders are always hoarding, so they don't upset the supply chain during a pandemic or hurricane because they're buying their stuff all year long during normal times and they're already stocked up. These people, are not the people who the OP is talking about. The person that just decides one day once this pandemic got rolling that they need to go out and buy 300 ROLLS of toilet paper, or 7 chest freezers, is an Ahole at best, and keeping other people who live paycheck to paycheck, or people that just didn't have a large stock from buying a necessity. I have no compassion for them. So maybe they're considered an opportunist and not a hoarder? IDK. Someone that is buying an entire stores stock of Toilet paper or a 5-10 year supply for them all at once because all of a sudden a pandemic is coming, is taking away everyone else's FREEDOM to CHOOSE, for no logical reason whatsoever. And, also putting a lot of people at risk of catching and spreading the virus by having them going from store to store, day after day, trying to find something that should and normally is always on the shelves like toilet paper. Toilet paper is made in the U.S., from materials sourced in the U.S., so why on earth would someone need to run out and buy 300 rolls of it for a family of 2 or 3 people? It's not the people that went out and bought 24 rolls that are the problem. It's the few choice people that bought 2-3 shopping carts full of TP. Nobody has a problem with you having 100 rolls. It’s that you continue to purchase all you see during the shortage that rubs people wrong.

Bingo! Another NW citizen here. In fact the reason I'd stocked up on N95 and N100 masks was because of Mt Saint Helens. The ash was so thick you literally almost couldn't breath. I guess we got lucky with that part. Having prepped for the 9.0 Cascadia earthquake that's suppose to level all of the buildings, we've got close to 6 months worth of food. My business partner went out and bought 6 dozen eggs when the CV hit. It's just stupidity, but I don't begrudge him that. We had an extra dozen on hand, but weren't worried as there is a can of freeze dryed egg powder in the basement. We even built a structure, and had it examined by an engineering firm, that would survive the worst earthquake ever just to prep for that event. (it's now rented out) If anyone goes through this event and ignores the lessons, next time it will be harder to be sympathetic. Like Para was saying last ammo shortage. Same thing.

This thread reminds me of an argument with my wife. Said, “I should put up some bike hooks in the garage and clear out the area next to my bench...” my son jumped right in and said, “Then we could get another gun safe.” I grinned, Mrs. slosig rolled her eyes, and I said, “Well, I was thinking we could get a chest freezer, but another gun safe isn’t a bad idea. She is resistant to getting another freezer. Both the tiny freezer in the fridge and the not too big in order to fit into the spot in the laundry room upright freezer are stuffed full and we still don’t have the three months cushion that I’d like. She sure is resistant to getting another freezer though. Going to the grocery story once a week for perishables and to top off is an adjustment for her versus popping in on her way by every two or three days. Oh well, prolly not any available now anyway, even if the appliance stores are allowed to be open...

I've maintained when married or single, a minimum of 8 weeks of food; mainly non-perishable. I factor electrical loss in to the equation. What self-generating electrical power I have is for my radios. I'm at 3-4 months worth of food. Lived in earthquake country for almost 40 years. Be prepared. Do not like standing in line for anything - even free money.FEMA lines I will avoid like the plague. When the insanity started, I just went home with a smile - I am prepared. I've gone out when lines were not there, to get some stuff, but could have avoided it. Nice to have fresh fruit and veggies, but I can do without. Shop at Costco so that helps explain things too. What the panic buying told me is how much of the population is really unprepared. If a real 7-9 point on the Richter scale were to hit here, cannibalism would start in 14 days or less. I'd be shooting a lot of wanna be looters as they come within range. -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- It only stands to reason that where there's sacrifice, there's someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there's service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master. All I know is that when I checked this morning, Whirlpool(Maytag, Amana) was giving us a mid August delivery date on any freezer. About 3 weeks ago, the entire nations inventory evaporated. Guess people figured they needed a place to keep all those frozen pizzas they bought. __________________________ Writing the next chapter that I've been looking forward to.

We live in a rural area of northern AZ. Going to the grocery store or COSTCO is a 45+ minute one way drive, so we were looking at buying a freezer anyway (before the pandemic). My wife couldn't decide on a chest or an upright and she spent to much time researching. By the time she decided on an upright, every appliance source in town or down in the valley were completely sold out. The dealers all said the same thing, "This isn't the usual time of the year we sell freezers, but they're all gone until late May or mid June at the earliest." We finally found the last available 20cf model through HOME DEPOT. It took three weeks to get it from out of state.

Many seem to be incapable of planning for the future. If you can afford to buy and fill a freezer today you certainly could have months ago. I am predicting fully half of those freezers will not be opened again after this pandemic. The food inside will be freezer burned and useless 5 years from now when it’s decided to “just sell that damn thing”. ----------The weather is here I wish you were beautiful----------

I was a mild prepper before...nothing crazy, just an extra store of food in the basement. I’ve always meant to crank it up a notch though, especially with a 2 year old and a preggo wife. Back in early January, I started to see what was going to happen with this virus. I cranked my emergency stores up to about 4-6 months of emergency food. Also got a house generator and more emergency supplies. I don’t think that was hoarding, just being prepared.

If I can find it and they can’t, why should I deprive myself to compensate for their ineptitude? If I’m buying something, I’m buying it based on my need. I won’t buy more than I need because I don’t need it, and that’s stupid and a waste if my own resources, not out of consideration for someone else. Next time plan better.
Possibly true, and if so simply evidence of more ineptitude. Frozen food kept properly doesn’t go bad. Freezer burn is dehydration, which can be remedied with a marinade, stewing etc. "I am a Soldier. I fight where I'm told and I win where I fight." GEN George S. Patton, Jr.
