Coleman's I think I've been to, but not the others.

Dinosaur BBQ was always a good place too. As I recall, they sold out to new owners around 10 years ago and just aren't quite the same.

Most all of those are from the '60s and '70s and long gone. I believe Weber's German Restaurant still exists on Danforth Street 4 blocks from my maternal family's home I documented in this thread:
https://sigforum.com/eve/forums...610022474#4610022474.
Here's a 2019 article about Weber's who ironically serves notable Ruben sandwiches too. Big Grin

Coleman's certainly does. My family is friends with patriarch Peter Coleman.

My kid sister took me to Dinosaur BBQ in the early 2000s during a visit I made back East. She says the same thing now that you have.

I remember that thread. Your place was just a few blocks away from St. Joe's where I used to work.

From the long ago far away category is the Maid-Rite sandwich. We had one a block away from our house. Seasoned hamburger that was steamed. Put on a steamed bun with mustard and pickles. 25 cents. You could get a shoe box full of French fries for a buck. They tried to make a comeback some years ago but I don’t think they got a foot hold.

I remember falling in love with sandwiches and a beer when reading the book "The First Deadly Sin" by Lawrence Sanders where the main character Edward X Delaney ate sandwiches drinking a beer.

Never had a lobster sandwich ... definitely on my bucket list. Can't believe I never had one while I was stationed in the Coast Guard at Yorktown, Virginia.

Lobster in Yorktown VA?

that area is better known for it's Oysters and Blue Crab

Buffalo NY area unique sub is a stinger
A bunch of places make them now, it I think Jim’s steak out was first-
Everything on a traditional philly cheese steak
And everything on a traditional Buffalo chicken finger sub ( spicy chicken wing sauce smothered chicken fingers, provolone cheese and blue cheese dressing)
All together on one sub !

I do miss the Bobby from Capriotti's. Was better with their original bakery breads, but the current ones aren't bad. I just don't get back east much anymore...

One of the few remaining good things about NJ.
The Harolds NY Deli corned beef sandwich. With side offerings from the self-serve pickle bar.

We don't have any good Jewish delis in the Mobile area (that I know about). Pastrami brisket (not round) is really hard to find. I've ordered Kenny and Ziggy's pastrami through Goldbelly.com several times, and it's excellent! If I'm ever in the area, I'll definitely check the place out in person.

Regarding Jersey Mike's, the app didn't work out for me at all. I've been to this location in person, and it was way too crowded but the sandwiches were always good. Using the app, I ordered three sandwiches, all "Mike's Way" (onions, lettuce, tomato, vinegar, oil, spices). When I got home and opened them, they were all drenched in mustard...way too much mustard to simply be a mistake, and nothing else. Nothing close to "Mike's Way." I went through the hassle of getting my money back but won't go there again unless I'm standing in front of them when they're being made, and I doubt I'll even go back at all.

That sucks! I've used it probably a dozen or more times between 2 different locations in different towns and never had an issue. I love walking in when they are crowded and all the people stare at me as I walk up, pick up my sack and leave Smile

I use the app at our local Firehouse quite a bit, and it works great. I love bypassing the line. I'm sure it was just bad luck/timing for me at that one particular Jersey Mike's store.

A fresh one from Antone's is still a pretty good sandwich, but maybe not a great one. (They sell them premade in the grocery store now, too.) I'm not sure they are as good as they used to be. It is the chow-chow (what they call their relish) that makes them good.

The girl was probably a factor.

It's even better when you add Horsey Sauce to it. I put 1 whole packet on mine and it becomes extra good.

Jim

I use either 3 or 4 packets of the horsey sauce on mine.

Maybe at your Arby's. The one I had at a local Arby's was a typical, mass-produced sandwich. Maybe better than a Big Mac, but only a little.

I assume horsey sauce has horseradish. Reubens have Russian dressing, for Pete's sake.

My favorite is the King Crabby Grilled Cheese from 49th State Brewery. Not only is it one of my favorites but I really like 49th State and try and support them. During the whole Covid clusterfuck of lockdowns, restrictions, etc., they would regularly send pizzas, boxed lunches and vats of seafood chowder for the staff in the ER during the middle of the night.

Grilled sourdough bread, crab meat and a mix of swiss and cream cheese served with their delicious fries and a cup of seafood chowder which makes for great dipping.

I grew up on these, from Norristown, PA which is about 20 miles outside Philadelphia.

A “Zep” is a very local Norristown specialty and sort of related to an Italian Hoagie but unlike a hoagie that always has capicola ham, hard salami and cooked (Cotto) salami, this only has cooked salami and NEVER lettuce. Only thick juicy tomatoes and thick slices of Bermuda onion actually sliced to order. You typically put “hoagie spread” on it which is a spicy sort of relish made from pickled hot cherry peppers:

From Eve’s Lunch (a total hole in the wall type place) in Norristown, PA

“The Zep”:

Good local bread, FRESH every day
Cooked salami
Provolone cheese
Sliced tomato
Sliced onion
Oil
Oregano
Optional: hoagie spread
