Should I get involved in this discussion? I've been there; done that - no fun trying to inventory the printing equipment in the counterfeiter's basement. Hard to concentrate after having shot him with my Colt .357 magnum revolver following his escape attempt and my partner and I chasing him on foot through the snow in northeast Ohio back in 1963. He had a .357 S&W he was shooting at us. Years later my partner, fearing something might
be mentally wrong with him, admitted he wanted badly to kill the guy. I admitted I wanted to kill him also. My Super X flat nose bullet punctured his left shoulder and a piece of pink muscle hung out the exit wound on his light blue tee shirt. I
still think about that piece of muscle!!! I got into another shooting situation two years later; again another counterfeiting investigation in Cleveland, Ohio. Missed that guy - fell on his gun.

I guess I just frown on being too judgmental when it comes to critique of a law enforcement officer's
actions during a situation which unexpectedly becomes of the highest magnitude of stress.

Just my two cents worth...

You never ran away fom a suspect, Michael. Tell me if I'm wrong.

How would your fellow officers have reacted to any of their fellow officers who ran away? I'm not talking about finding cover. I'm talking about turning tail and fleeing. How would they have reacted if such a story had gotten around about one of your own?

^^i can tell you how it goes...we had a female officer leave another officer fighting in a ditch one night. The male officer had his teeth kicked in and had to have a bridge from then on.....when we found out that the female had tucked tail and run off leaving the other officer in the ditch, she was personal non grata from that point on.

No one called her a coward to her face, but no one, and I mean no one helped her with anything ever again. Not just checking in on her at a call for service, not eating dinner with her, not helping her change a tire. Nothing.

The staff heard and made her a K9 Officer, so that she would have some backup. Ten years later into her career, and she was still shunned. And rightfully so.

And I’m not denigrating female officers, there are a few that I would have no issue going into battle with ....but most are box checkers for the department’s do good feely-feel political rah rah section. And everyone knows it.

You don’t have to be 6’6” and 250 to be a good cop. But you have better have your head screwed on straight. One of the best cops I worked with was 115lbs and 5’5” and had boobs, but I’d go anywhere with her as a partner. She was like having a tiger in a can with you, just pop the lid and it’s on!

More umm "excellent" police work by a female officer. I guess?

Just watch

I'm having a hard time deciding who sucks more at their job in this one- the thieves or the police officer.

Tell me- anyone here, police officer or no- tell me the rationale for the officer telling that guy to get back in his car, instead of telling him to get on the ground and holding him until backup arrived.

Forget police training or lack thereof being a factor. How about just plain common damn sense???

Her handling of this situation caused her to have to fire shots into a moving car.

Go ahead, someone explain this to me.

Did she try to shoot the tires out then stood there as he drove away?

that's what it looks like.

She sure as hell didn't try to engage the driver.

She fucked-up. I know a couple of recent retired Berkeley PD and all have said, they know she's new and there's a ton of explaining that's going on; beside her explaining her actions, the FTO who trained her and signed-off on it all, their Sgt, their LT..

Unfortunately police agencies are pretty desperate for bodies right now. And that’s only getting worse.

I’ve got some stories that would stop you in your tracks. Current stories.

Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here.

Regarding the Berkeley PD incident, the suspects were laughing at the CVS employee trying to stop them.

That’s the mindset of today’s California criminal. They know Bay Area DAs won’t prosecute, so they aren’t afraid of arrest.

As for the cop asking the driver to return, she may have felt it safer for the puke to be seated rather than standing and await backup. If it’s a keyless ignition, having the keys on the roof still may have allowed the car to start. The cop was negotiating on the fly vs. taking control.

Lack of qualified candidates? Poor training? Knowing that some grandstanding politician is gonna lock you up for any perceived injustice?

"GET ON THE GROUND!! GET ON THE GROUND RIGHT NOW!!! YOU ARE UNDER ARREST!! GET ON THE GROUND AND PUT YOUR HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK!! DO IT!! NOW!!!!"

Since when do police officers who are holding a suspect at gunpoint tell that suspect to get back in their car?

Maybe it’s just me that gets bugged by how many times the law has to repeat commands to stop, keep your hands where I can see them? It seems in each of these cases, people refused to obey lawful commands.

I’m old enough to remember if you bowed up against the man, you were gonna get thumped on the spot, keep it up and you got it again in a cruiser. Act a fool in the cruiser and you can have some more in the hallway or the elevator.

People don’t care to listen. If their life ends, well, the family did better than what numbnuts would ever bring home.
