I think the pro team names should be sold for advertising rights, like the Bowl games.

Imaging Coca-Cola getting the Diet Cokes (San Francisco), the Coke Zeros (Detroit), The Cokes (Miami).

Charmin could clean up as well.

The possibilities are endless, and no more tears! Pun intended.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Screw the NFL. Scrub every bit of these complimentary names from all the damn teams in sports. No Redskins, no Braves, no Blackhawks and no Chiefs. Hell, no Browns either. Yeah, I know the Browns team name isn't a racial slur but that doesn't really matter in these days.

Yeah, let the left and their group think idiots ruin football and maybe these idiots and the so called quiet majority will pull their heads out of their asses. The National Felons League doesn't matter and isn't important. Let the left destroy the NFL and maybe some people will wake up to their tyranny.

That’s almost what soccer does. They just all name their teams United (which as I understand actually means something in other countries but the US just does it to sound European) and then plaster a big corporate logo across the chest. I thought Atlanta United was the Atlanta American Family Insurance’s when I first saw the jersey.

At least Chicago is sticking with the Blackhawks - every once in a while they get something right.

One thing I wish Trump would do is issue an order preventing the military from participating in any and all professional sports ceremonies. No more flyovers, no more color guards, nothing. Why should Soldiers/Sailors/Airmen/Marines be forced to stand at attention during the National Anthem while these ingrates are taking a knee and blasting BLM signs? Talk about a slap in the face. The professional sports world uses the military to pretend that they are pro-America but in reality they are not.

Stop ALL military participation. They can name the teams whatever the highest bidder wants.

You know... I think that's right! They should Stop ALL military participation.

Only the Army/Navy game should have the privilege of flyovers!

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

A quick summary, mostly for my own curiosity:

In 10 days, this discussion has gotten over 100 responses and roughly 160 votes in the poll. By and large, we're a stubborn bunch: 80% of the votes that weren't "I'll just be quiet" were in the "stick with the old name" category.

That said, this morning's news says that the Redskins may announce a name change as soon as tomorrow... for what that's worth.

God bless America.

Local news has been reporting on the impending name change announcement since Friday evening, so this is obviously not just local, but a national news story.

As I mentioned before, I'll always enjoy the games of baseball and football, but both the NFL and many of its players have devolved into something that I don't care to waste either time or money in supporting.

The part of me that reminisces about the good ol' days of the Redskins had hoped they would show some backbone and not be coerced into capitulating to the Virtue Signalers...but if they do, then I have no reason to maintain even a tiny semblance of support or good thoughts for the team.

I'm guessing any gear that says Redskins on it just got a whole lot more expensive. Sure do wish I could get a hold of some old retro jerseys or even retro gear.

A very good point.

- - - - - -

I didn't really intend for this thread to go to specifics in terms of sports or teams, though I'll acknowledge the example I gave to begin with dealt with the Redskins. We've had threads about this sort of thing a number of times, and it seems that the majority of us are fed up with the shenanigans of certain sports teams and players. Like so many other things, it seems that sporting events have become more about the money changing hands than about the teamwork, athleticism, and family-friendly entertainment.

I apologize that I focused so many of my comments on the specific sport of football and the specific team of the Redskins. I lived in the area when the Washington Bullets changed their names to the Washington Wizards. Admittedly, I really wasn't much into basketball and didn't follow the team, but even that name change angered me. Sometimes, it's fun to go to see a team play a sport that you don't normally follow, partly just to say you saw a game and partly to see if you are really missing out on that sport. Once the Bullets became the Wizards I lost any interest in going to even a single game.

I did see the Caps play once and really enjoyed that.

I'm not opposed to new teams coming into a sports league and possibly supporting them, and if a new team without much of a legacy decides to change their name of their own accord and they aren't breaking with a long iconic name and tradition I'm fine with that...but this business of allowing others, especially virtue signalers, to intimidate a team into spitting on their own history and tradition, I have no interest in supporting that team...and if an entire sports league starts to follow suit, well I can live without that sport taking up my interest, time, or money.

I enjoy many competitive sports and, in my younger days, enjoyed playing in a few recreational sports leagues...but I don't eat, sleep, and breathe the sport or team...and I don't have a bad day when the team loses or get angry and take it out on others. I can enjoy a sport until the league and players forget why they are really on the field, and forget how incredibly fortunate they are to live in a country wealthy enough to allow them to make their living as athletes or in support of athletes. Once they lose sight of these things they have lost me as a fan.

Hey, MDS, there's no apology necessary at all -- I was simply making an observation. I certainly wasn't jabbing at you. I'm with you on this.

I try to stay on topic when I post, but every once in a while I need someone to tug on the reins a little and get me back on the trail.

This culture and country can never be made pure enough by tearing it around the hem. The only way to erase it all is to destroy it and rebuild it. That, of course, is the goal. If we are to delete all references and titles for the sake of the offended, we'll have to rename Washington D.C. and Washington State eventually to be consistent. The only way to do that is by completely starting over. It would have to go into the most petty of details to make it all worth the effort. No one wants that but progressivism is how that will get done. No University of Utah Utes. No State of Utah. No Seminole County Fl. Ever fewer sanctioned words in the dictionary. Anyone driving a Pontiac will be shamed and the car destroyed. This tantrum will get out of control. It will get out of control and innocent people are going to die. Sound extreme? Look how far we've come toward tyranny since the 1970's. This hysteria, this frenzy will advance exponentially.
