So we could control the oil reserves become a key player in the world oil market, sell it off and cancel out the national debt pretty much

Don't see where the US will be able to take 100% of the oil, it's revenue and give the people of VZ nothing, that wouldn't be prudent, and frowned upon heavily globally.

We may control it's distribution and manage payments for the country but it needs it's money to run properly and install a new government and military including one that will fight the cartels.

Frankly, this is all any democrat, or any congress person for that matter, needs to say at this time. Not the least bit surprised that the one democrat who had the sense, patriotism, and decency to do it is Sen. Fetterman.

I certainly hope this isn't about toppling Maduro just to take their oil. A free and prosperous Venezuela as a productive partner in the region is worth a lot more to us (and the rest of the free world) than their petroleum assets. An oil grab would be short-sighted, not to mention corrupt and unethical.

I doubt it is; is bet POTUS is looking 6 months to years ahead when he makes his moves. History has shown him to be playing chess while those that oppose him are trying to figure out checkers.

Great that Maduro the drug runner was caught. Have the DOJ put their best prosectors on the case to secure a conviction. Now is the time get the hell out of that country. Nation building by the US has been a disaster, way too much American blood spilled over nothing positive. We need to learn from our past.

A comment like this shows just how little some Americans comprehend global politics. The day of the event some here think to post something like this. Yeah sure that is what this is about. Roll Eyes

I don't think that's what this is about. My comment was in response to suggestions that we should take the oil.

One thing that's coming out of this is President Trump telling Iran, Russia and China to GTFO out of our hemisphere...Monroe Doctrine.

Lower oil prices will hurt Iran and Russia.

Also, Cuba's source of cheap oil is over.

Mexico not taking PJDT seriously was a big mistake. Sheinbaum, the cartel-controlled president can protest all she wants but she and the Mexican govt won't be able to stop JSOC raids on the cartels or a potential annexation of Mexico by U.S.

I don’t think this was ever about fentanyl or about oil. (Though the oil will be nice.)
This has been about demonstrating US resolve and military might to China, Iran, and Russia. There have been long standing concerns about Iranian backed terrorists training in Venezuela, and even more concern about China’s increased influence in south and Central America, note Panama. I suspect we’ll learn in the future that their involvement in the hemisphere is greater and more dangerous than we hear about now. Note the press conference’s beating of the chest that our military is unparalleled and we will do what we need to.

I think Donald sees increasing involvement of China, Iran, and Russia in the hemisphere as a slower moving Russian missile crisis. And I think we will learn in the future that he is right.

Yeah, the oil is a perk, but not to the extent of willing to go to the mat for it.
I am tired of every anti-American pundit seeking to accuse the US of just wanting oil.

Just my humble opinion.

This lady’s article has a longer and better articulated discussion of the strategic threats the US is pursuing.

I hope link comes through.

“What justifies this action, from a Pentagon strategic perspective, is the convergence of three existential threats from America's three primary adversaries. China has embedded operational control into critical mineral extraction that feeds weapons manufacturing. Iran has established drone production facilities within strike range of the continental United States. Russia has deployed military advisers and integrated air defense systems in the Caribbean. Venezuela represents the only location where all three adversaries operate simultaneously. The oil is secondary. Breaking Chinese supply chain dominance, eliminating Iranian manufacturing capability, and expelling
Russian military presence are primary.”
