The longhorn, tiger, cougar, bear, and orangutan are related genetically, sharing a common ancestor in the Placentalia of the “Novacek tree,” specifically in the class Boreoeutheria, perhaps as recently as the rise of Scrotifera (animals in which the male carries sperm in an external scrotum).

Like all life on earth, all have DNA comprised of adenosine, cytosine, guanine, and taurine (ACGT), with what is thought to be the key chromosomal trait carried on the Y chromosome. The expansion of genetic sequencing and particularly in mitochondrial DNA sequencing (mitochondria do have a small amount of their own DNA, not just RNA as was taught when I first took molecular biology, and mitochondrial DNA is passed in the maternal genetic line exclusively) is yielding new data sets that researchers at colleges and universities, including many the Houston area, are using to refine the understanding of evolutionary biology.

As for mascots, each of the animals listed are used as mascots for various sports teams and other organizations. The orangutan, the most difficult to figure out, was used as a mascot at the San Diego Zoo when one of their orangutans named Ken Allen began escaping from his enclosure. Ken’s peaceful bimbles around the zoo saw him looking at the other animals, but doing little else. Zookeepers were stumped over how he escaped, eventually spending some $40,000 hiring experienced rock climbers to find every finger, toe, and foothold within the enclosure and on the steps to eliminate the identified holds. The other animals have reportedly escaped their enclosures as well, leading their keepers on merry chases about the countryside to locate and recapture them.

I did not leave the US to find this information.

None of the football players look like a long horn, a tiger, a cougar, or a bear, but some of them resemble an orangutan.

I found what you said riveting.

The mascots are from the schools the four friends attended. The Orangutan predicted that these schools would win a sporting event (football game?).
