Tom, like most of Hollywood is a nut. But I respect that he does all/most of his own stunts, learned to fly a helicopter for MI-6, and is a producer on this flick. Everything he said was correct; I’m going to guess it’s not the first time he’s observed safety-rules being violated. ___________________________ All it takes...is all you got. ____________________________ For those who have fought for it, Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ

The devil is in the details. What has happened prior to that ass chewing? Some context would be enlightening. I don't get the whole he can't talk t them like that. More snowflake BS. I have yelled louder than that? And I will bet that many here have as well. I have definately taken my share of ass chewing.

Unprofessionally Unhinged would be an Understatement! That said, re: COVID, I'll add this: Lots of people are getting infected/testing positive for it....Yes, it's SUPER Contagious! However, 99+% of those who get it, recover w/o incident....Sooo for most, it's NOT Super Deadly! Unless you're in an 'at risk' segment of the population (and if you are, then YOU need to take appropriate precautions), the ongoing 'freak out' over COVID is way overblown! What's occurring in the name of prevention is destroying lives & livlihoods, and significantly affecting the future of our children! We need to end this insane reaction to this virus and move on with life in this country! Life has risks, but CLEARLY, the effects of the response are overwhelmingingly WORSE than that of the disease! ____________________________________________________________ If Some is Good, and More is Better.....then Too Much, is Just Enough !! I'm with Balzé Halzé on this one. I thought it could be the Less Grossman meltdown on Tropic Thunder. "Where's the grip? There? Punch him in the face." Since Tropic Thunder was a satire of Hollywood, it would reason that a real meltdown would be quite similar. I really don't have a problem with his behavior. I was sometimes dressed-down far worse in the military for far smaller infractions. He's the boss, and the whole project could come to an end if the State of California got involved. from Babylon Bee... ‘We Must Follow The Science!’ Screams Actor Who Believes Xenu Dumped Frozen Aliens Into Volcanoes And Exploded Them With Bombs 75,000,000 Years Ago LONDON—While filming the next Mission Impossible movie, an actor who believes Xenu stacked frozen aliens around volcanoes and then flew Douglas DC-8s over them to drop hydrogen bombs and blow them all to smithereens some 75,000,000 years ago shouted at his crew for not wearing masks and not listening to the science. "We must listen to the science, do you understand me!?" shouted the man who follows the idea that a space lord alien dude came to Earth, then known as Teegeeack, part of a sector called the Galactic Confederation, and blew up a bunch of his people, which transformed them into thetans. "I'm sick and tired of all the ignorant beliefs going around this set! Come on, man!" "Alright, I'm off to go clear some clusters of thetans off my body," he said, referring to his belief that the volcanoed, bombed aliens transformed into metaphysical creatures called "thetans" and now attach themselves to humans, and then must be cleared through a process that involves meditation, introspection, and giving the Church of Scientology millions of dolllars. "When I get back, I want everyone to be following..." He left a dramatic pause here. "... THE SCIEEEEEEENCE!!!" NRA Life Member - "Fear God and Dreadnaught"

Tom's just upset because he overheard the film crew making fun of Scientology behind his back. And - what's the difference between "you're fired" and "you're gone"? He says them in the same sentence several times.

Crusty old curmudgeon |
This is my thought as well. We don't know how many times he has had to rail against his employees prior to this rant. My guess is more than once. This time it was recorded is all. I'm with Cruise on this one. Him dressing down his employees like that was perfectly appropriate. You break a rule, one that jeopardizes the project, affecting my money and the livelihood of thousands of others? A few F bombs are appropriate. It's not like he attacked those employees for personal characteristics, calling them dumb or whatever.

Hospital capacity and ICU capacity is at 0% in my county. Literally every hospital bed in my county is filled with someone who needs care so urgently that they require a doctor and a nurse to be nearby. On the macro level, sure, the fatality rate is low. But on the sheer scale of exponential growth, there are going to be more than a few people who died because America can't get it's shit together.

Boss man makes the rules. Don’t like it then you can quit. That wasn’t even an epic rant. He even made some reasonable points. His industry is fucked.

Sounds like this had been addressed earlier and some of thew crew weren't listening, following or, paying attention, which led to Cruise dressing-down everyone. If you've got employees who repeatedly refuse to follow instructions, either willfully or, absentmindedly, an attention-getter like this is what's needed. I've had valuable employees either screw around too much, or not paying attention, and a raised, sharp voice helps drive the point home. This wasn't a meltdown, this was a 'you're f-ing around, now knock-it-off' moment.

I have a very particular set of skills |
If not mistaken, I believe this is being filmed in the UK. If they've got folks 'monitoring' his crew/set looking for violations to issue infractions and/or shut them down, and have perhaps warned him of of such, you could see where a person with large amounts of $$ and perhaps concern for other workers' livelihoods would be wound a bit tight. Perhaps 'Hollywood'/the [movie] industry being 'shut down' is a taste of reality for him and other celebrity 'elites.' I doubt the couple guys involved were deliberately trying to do something wrong...'Hey, let's see if we can get Tom REALLY mad today'...Sounds like they were trying to look at a computer monitor or something?? A bit tough to do from 2 meters away. The people who NEVER get within 2 meters of anyone, EVER, when out in public and/or at work...go ahead and raise your hand. In the entire MI7 movie, will there be zero scenes where two or more unmasked actors are within 2 meters? Hmmm...that'll be interesting... As one of the commenters put it...'A virus so dangerous you've got to be tested to know if you've got/had it.' Valid point for the many, many of folks. That being said, I'd say this was unprofessional/over the top and shows a level of loss of control. As mentioned above, are any of the actors violating the guidelines while in front of the camera? And it is also highly likely that Mr. Cruise, being one of the biggest names in Hollywood, has enough pull to get someone entirely blacklisted out of the industry...for life. $.02 worth, Boss A real life Sisyphus... Don't Panic |
Yep. Some people need profanity as a memory aid...as I recall from the movie "Patton". Maybe TC was just helping make the policies memorable. If some numbnutz violated procedure repeatedly and thereby risked a project I'd personally sunk $700,000 into, they'd be spared the rant - not my style - but not be given a chance to quit, they'd be history then and there.

Eschew Obfuscation |
This. I'm as sick of the covid hysteria as anyone. But, I don't begrudge the guy getting pissed off when people are ignoring the rules that have been imposed on him as a condition of letting him make the movie. In fact, I thought it was a pretty good rant. _____________________________________________________________________ “One of the common failings among honorable people is a failure to appreciate how thoroughly dishonorable some other people can be, and how dangerous it is to trust them.” – Thomas Sowell

I guess it is a matter of style. Personally, I suspect it would have had more impact to have fired the one or two on the sport in a polite but direct manner. Then turned to everyone else and in a polite but direct manner said something to the effect of, “I can’t allow any of you to risk anyone else’s livelihood by failing to follow the rules. It sucks, but those are the rules. Follow them or you’re fired.” No drama, no “unhinged” accusations, just action. Actions really do speak louder than words.
