I have owned 4 Submariners over the years (one no-date, 3 with date). Sold my last one back in March of 2019.

In December of 2021, I decided that I wanted the new 41mm Sub with date. So I went to a couple of AD (both of which I had bought previous Subs at.) and got put on "the list" for one.

In June of 23, I got the call from one of the ADs. It was on Friday, I told them that I would be in on the next Monday to get it. Over the weekend I decided that I really did not want it, so I called them on Monday and turned it down.

The other AD, has not called yet...

No problem, I have my Seamaster and am thinking of going with a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms next, just have to decided if I want to go up to a 45mm watch, my 42mm Seamaster is my preferred size. (I used to have a 45mm PO, but after a few years, talked myself into selling it because it was too big, should have bought the 42mm PO at that time.)

I’m no expert, but I’d recommend NOT getting on a waitlist with two different dealers. Unless perhaps they are in different parts of the country. Any dealer near you is going to be going through the same sales rep, regional manager, etc., whatever Rolex does. I wouldn’t put it past them to get names, and if you’re on more than one list it could appear that you’re a flipper, not a dedicated customer.

My son wanted the baby blue dial, which apparently is popular. It took about 6 months, and I haven’t bought anything from this store in over 30 years, and nothing much even then. But they knew it was for my son- and he went by and talked to them when he was in town. So I think they truly believed it was for a young new Rolex customer, and not someone who would flip it.

I have purchased and have service done on my watches by this business:
https://www.bhindi.com/
The service was exceptional and performed by the Rolex Service Center.
Anyway, they are an AD.
The last time I went there, they must of had, maybe 80 or so, Rolex watches on display.

Or do you authenticate them prior to pawning?

They are easy to spot.

Who are you to question me with your condescending quotation marks?

I have been following the Rolex market for a couple of years now though I really can't justify a purchase.
I was amazed at the "games" the AD's played with making you buy jewellery or models of watches you did't want only to be in their good graces and maybe they would let you buy what you wanted at some future nebulous date.
During Covid the after market exploded and prices went through the roof but that seems to be over now.
Recently Rolex lost a lawsuit in France brought by the French Trade Authority on behalf of AD's in France. This resulted in a 100 million Euro fine to Rolex and the removal of a clause that stated AD's could not sell online or by mail.
This presents a real problem for Rolex as they do not have their own distribution system and in fact the real customers of Rolex products are the AD's and not the end users.
Another real problem for Rolex ;despite what has been said here,is that the "fakes" really are getting very close to the real thing and are almost impossible to spot without disassembly. Anyone looking for "bling" or "clout" is going to be drawn to them and save thousands.
If you have the time check out the thousands of videos on YouTube as it's a fascinating rabbit hole to fall into.

I love the idea of a really "good" fake Rolex. I realize there are many owners out there who buy them for the satisfaction of owning one, but there are probably just as many who buy for the status perceived by others. If that's what you want and you can get it for a fraction of the price, why not?

Generally that's true but Ferrari is another company that makes you buy models that you don't want just to get the chance to buy the car that you do. They also put restrictions on what you can do to the car and when you can sell your own property.
If you could buy a "fake" that had the same performance and an expert couldn't tell the difference without dismantling it and you saved multiple thousands of dollars doing so wouldn't you be tempted?

@Orive 8. I keep thinking about a FF Grande Date, myself... But, I want to know if it "actually" works in and out of the ocean.

So many "divers" with "great clicky bezels," whihc makes all the online watch nerds giggle => jammed up mess if actually worn in the ocean.

I have a sea dweller 116600 model. Owned it for some time. I work on cars, scuba, snorkel, been to Middle East and A Stan. It is a tank. Never a problem with the bezel or watch

IMO - this Rolex "wait list" thing is not long for this world, especially for Datejusts (I am also waiting to buy one).

I got my first Rolex, a 16570 Polar Explorer II, during the last downturn in the watch market (2010-2014). Nobody wanted them back then, and I paid less than 4 grand for a 2004 serial number. Currently, it's worth double that. I use that experience to remind myself to always "buy it right", no matter what the object is.

I also just passed on my allocation for a 911, so I could just be a fool, come to think of it Smile

It won't be long before the movements are exact replicas. The clones are already pretty darn close, and getting better every day. They're getting the materials correct, the dimensions correct, the weights correct, the manufacturing processes correct. It's just a matter of time.

If you're buying a counterfeit watch or a kit car, you're probably buying the product for the wrong reason(s). YMMV. Wink

I have seen a few videos on Youtube where they are comparing good fakes to real ones, I know the one I watched the guy was an appraiser and he said he almost has to hold a real one next to the fake so that he can compare the difference in colors on screws under a loupe to tell which is real.

As far as fake vs real goes when it comes to the technical accuracy of the movement, I think it's pretty well known that you can buy a "better" watch for a lot less money than a Rolex. People buy Rolexes for other reasons than just telling time.

It's more comparable to buying a Leica camera than a Ferrari. Leicas cost many multiples more than other digital (or film) cameras that take equally good photographs from a technical standpoint, but there is an aesthetic and ergonomic aspect to them that is hard to duplicate. They are also a status symbol.

Fun fact: Leica also makes a pretty nice watch.
