Looking at life thru a windshield |
I remember back in the early 80's and going in the PX and looking at the Submariner and then looking in the stereo/photography department. Stupid me wasted money on the stereo equipment.

My dad paid $150.00 for his Pepsi in Hong Kong in 1962. I paid $1,750 for my 2 tone GMT in 1981. Only wear them on occasion these days.

Naturally, my sometimes-adolescent mind went to the gutter first, but in seriousness I'd like to ask what is "the treatment?" God bless America.

I have a 2 line no date sub and an older model polar explorer 2. When at my AD dropping off the EX2 for service I spoke with both their Rolex certified watchmaker and sales lady and both were down with movement numbers and references we were using and I really think they knew if they had what I wanted I wasn’t going t lo flip it. They advertise a lot and everytime I swing by about every 1-2 months they never have anything in stainless sports models for sale. And plenty of ladies models and even some high dollar precious metal models. Man I’d love to go back even 10 years and load up at those prices.

Two of the VERY best versions of the very best Rolex designs ever IMO. To me, there is only one more desirable, the first Explorer II 1655. Somebody on SF has a 1655. And they're going to karma it to me I think. https://www.fratellowatches.co...r-ii-reference-1655/

I'm not telling you what to do but I wouldn't spend a dime of my money in a Rolex AD. 2nd hand market is the way to go you just need to find a reputable dealer. Personally when I'm ready I'll be hitting 47th street in NYC due to the massive amount of dealers there. Sometimes, you gotta roll the hard six

I have bought a couple from davidsw.com and it has always been too notch.

I'm sure you know those are gray dealers, not ADs, and they charge a hefty premium. If you can afford it and want it same day, that's the way to go. But you're certainly not sticking it to the ADs by going gray.

I am aware. Its not about "sticking" it to the AD, its about not supporting them or their antics. I would not do business with an AD. My family has had a lot of good luck at gray dealers over the years. Straight forward transactions, no games, no buy 3 shitty watches to get 1 good one. Go to a gray dealer, look at their inventory, make your pick and negotiate. That's how I'll be spending my time and money. Sometimes, you gotta roll the hard six

I've seen several Grand Seiko watches while traveling in Asia. They are super nice and yes, you can drop $20k on one. But, you don't have to explain a Rolex to anyone.

About 30 years ago I went to a local Rolex dealer and asked to put a Daytona on their wait list. They had a larger store in a mall and I was shopping there one day. I stopped in and the owner was there, I told him about putting a Daytona on order, he went to his files and had no record of it. Then he tells me he has several in stock but they're for his good customers! But I can have 20% off any other one in stock, I walked out. Years later I did get a Daytona from another AD, never wore it and sold for a nice profit.

I don’t like the game either but I played it. I almost went grey and it was hard to swallow paying $5k more for a no date submariner. David W. Rather fail with honor than succeed by fraud. -Sophocles

Sure. They have crate loads of the most popular models in back! Crate loads! They just want to hoard them and enjoy sending potential buyers on their merry way. If you don't have the patience and tenacity to just keep at it, go away! No one is forcing you to buy anything! Find something else you like and quit whining.
Basically, you're asked to accompany the Sales Associate to a back ("VIP"?) room, with comfortable seating and décor, where the watch is sized to your wrist (if needed additional links are provided), the tags and protective coverings removed, the documentation indicating ownership is completed, and you're provided a glass or two of an "adult beverage" if desired. You meet the store manager, have the opportunity to chat for a a bit while the purchase is completed and just enjoy doing business in comfortable environment where you're not hurried, snooped on, or interrupted by other customers, or pressed to purchase other merchandise. In my case, I asked to have an unmarked bag to place the Rolex box inside so that I'd feel more secure during the walk from the store back to the cruise ship. Of course they were happy to accommodate, and while this may not be an issue to other buyers, it certainly seemed to be a good idea to me. None of this "treatment" would seem to be important to those who think spending $10K+ is like buying a six pack of beer at the local 7-11, but after looking for a particular model of a watch over a period of YEARS without success, and scoring a new one at two or three thousand dollars less than what flippers are selling them for, it makes for a pleasant and novel experience. Compared to buying a new car? Certainly something (relatively) special. "I'm not fluent in the language of violence, but I know enough to get around in places where it's spoken."

No good deed goes unpunished |
I was on the wait list for about 11 months for an Oyster Perpetual 36mm in the candy pink. Got the call last weekend. I love it and it makes me happy to wear it. My AD is great--no games and no BS. The watch was still in the packaging it came from Rolex in. There was a Sprite on display and I could almost see the wheels turning in my husband's mind.

This reminds me of a story by Jay Leno on why he won't buy Ferrari and play their stupid ownership games. We're talking Jay Leno who can afford any car he wants and has one of the best motor vehicle collections on the planet.

My two cents... There is no way I would even consider buying a new Rolex from a non Authorized Dealer. With the quality of the movements that can be produced today, one cannot be guaranteed that the watch is real. And I say that the average person cannot tell the difference between a fake and real Rolex. I have personally seen fake Rolex's in Los Angeles that appear to be genuine. Those watches will sell for $50 in the downtown area. I say that buying a Rolex from a non-AD is OK if you are fine with always having a ? in your mind. Again, just my two cents. Just like the thread on Etsy in this forum, not all vendors are crooks, but some are. Losing a couple hundred of dollars may be tolerable, losing thousands, IMO, is just not acceptable... The Rolex watch, movements and display boxes can be easily faked... Just my two cents...

Not even the best of the best fakes come close. I authenticate for a pawn shop and see them all the time. I love opening the back of the chinese shit and pointing out the obvious flaws. ____________________________ Eeewwww, don't touch it! Here, poke at it with this stick.

I hear that, but you are opening the back. Is the buyer of these watches "opening the back" and verifying the movements and serials? And you "authenticate" for a pawn shop. I mean even the pawn shops are sending them to you to "authenticate." Does that mean that the pawn shops that are buying these watches cannot tell the difference between real and fake? Or do you authenticate them prior to pawning?
