Oh, the joys of living in a downtrodden and poor economy. Our local Rolex dealer in Chester, Boodle And Dunthorne, not only has a fine selection in the window, but also inside in show cases, where they are ALL for sale. They are also dealers for Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe and a couple of other distinguished brands.

Next door but one is a Panerai dealership - they, too will sell you anything that is on display, be it in the window or indoors.

Rolex makes one million watches per year and they're building a new facility to increase production. There are plenty of Rolexes out there. But they don't flood the market with the currently most desirable models. I'm going on three mos. with my current production Pepsi GMT and I don't think I've seen another one in the wild since I got mine, and I've been all over Switzerland since getting it.

Exactly. They're not rare, just in somewhat high demand due to seeing a bit of a resurgence as status symbols with wealthier younger folks, and with a distribution scheme designed to create artificial scarcity.

Exacerbated by the robust gray market, where someone gets the opportunity to buy at retail from an AD and knows they can then immediately flip it to the gray market for a profit, then get back in the queue for another from the AD. So a number of the Rolexes sold by ADs aren't even being worn. (Kinda like the concert ticket resellers who gobble up seats when first available to then resell for a profit, leaving the fans either hoping they are lucky enough to snag one before it's gone or else resigning themselves to paying more on the secondary market.)

Some of these gray market dealers are sitting on hundreds/thousands of Rolexes, while the AD shelves are bare. Look at some of the YouTube videos of the longstanding New York City watch shops, or dealers at the bigger watch expos/conventions... They'll have Tupperware tubs full of lightly used to LNIB Rolexes.

Buy what you like and what you will use, don't buy a consumable as an investment.

Who are some of the most reliable and safe sources for gray or gently used Rolexes?

Thanks, Rick. It's a big step, but at some point I may want to take the leap.

Jomashop.com is one of the best Gray Market dealers out there that warranties everything they sell to equal the manufacturer warranty you'd give up by shopping there.
