I have 3 large dogs. I have about thrown in the towel on dog food. Even though it cost big time to feed 3 large dogs "quality food" we have stayed the cost. We have been feeding Acana for about 5 years now and the dogs seem to be ok with it.We have changed to a type of Acana to the lesser of poisons formula. I now think back. When I was a kid we never had dog food, our dogs ALWAYS ate table scraps, I don't remember any of our family dogs dying at a young age, or of cancer. Our family food was probably MUCH more healthy for us back then. I decided to make part of my dogs food. The last time I bought a bag of Acana it was near $100,and it does not last long. I now take a 20+ quart pot about once a week and fill it with, 5# of 80% ground beef,5 sweet potatoes cut up and mashed,2# of small carrots,3 beets cut up,a can of tuna fish and oil,1/4 cup of Tumeric,a good dose of whole black peppercorns, a couple apples.I usually throw a ham bone in the water and boil it for about 1 hour adding the potatoes and carrots and beets( I remove the bone at this time). I then throw in the rest and add a dozen eggs, mix it up then add some oatmeal to thicken it up. I give the dogs a couple big scoops every afternoon and leave the Acana down for them to snack on through out the day. They only eat the Acana on occasion. No chicken. The pack seems happy. I watch Animal Watch on YouTube, the Wolf girl has had a few episodes on feeding her Wolves a raw diet, very interesting and she is hot as hell to watch. I would eat anything she told me to.

Jeff, first of all, thank you for generously providing so much information. I have scrolled through the whole thread, and have not seen the food I give my two dachshunds: Merrick Grain Free Beef and Sweet Potato. Is is a good choice? ______________________________________________________ "You get much farther with a kind word and a gun than with a kind word alone."

We feed our cat and dog Fromm's Gold. They both like sardines a lot as well, so they get a little snack of those from time to time. We're fortunate that we have a small pet supply store within walking distance that sells high quality products.
