We love Orijen and Acana, both owned by Champion. We believe that currently it's the best (and most expensive) dry food that you can feed your dog. Unfortunately there are very, very good odds that they are currently negotiating to sell... to Nestle. That wouldn't be good but we will keep a close eye on it.

We deal with this all the time. Many of our customers are in this same spot. Check out Victor grain free formulas. It's not as easy to find as TOW but it an excellent food and is priced right. It sound like this would be an excellent option for you. Victor is a family owned company. They have been in business since 1950 and have never had a recall. We sell thousands of pounds of Victor every month. It should be a bit lower than TOW but... it is much higher quality food. Smaller company, smaller batches, more care taken than a multi billion dollar food maker can give. Honestly, if I had to pay retail for dog food I'd probably feed Victor. https://victorpetfood.com https://victorpetfood.com/stores

What do you recommend for an 8 month old Yorkie? She’s been on Royal Canin puppy food but if the quality has changed its time too look at something else. She’s about 6 lbs.

Check the ingredients before you change. They didn't add by-products to everything. Be sure to keep your pup on puppy food until they are a year old or an 'all life stages' food. All life stages foods are grain free. Grain free vs. non grain free is like the caliber war. :+) I hesitate to recommend a specific food as I don't know the pup, activity level, your budget, etc. Check the ingredients. Avoid by-products of any kind. Avoid corn, wheat and soy. If I were feeding canned I be sure that the first ingredient is meat/protein, not water.

I work part time at a small feed store and we sell Victor, both the grain free and non grain free. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great USA made dog food. It isn't cheap, but if if you feed the recommended amount, you will be feeding less than some of the cheaper brands, so on the whole it isn't that much more expensive. The only downside is that it isn't available everywhere. We get customers who travel quite a ways to buy it.

+1 Orijen was my food of choice until I could not stand fish breath anymore & switched to Acana. I buy from PetFlow online. __________________________________________________ If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit! Sigs Owned - A Bunch

It's not a warning yet, it's a study that is currently underway. It is very controversial. It may be a moot point if the grain free food has Taurine added in therapeutic amounts. It is naturally occurring in meat but more is better. Most food makers add it to all foods. It also may be breed specific, the study will address this. Checking with your vet would be best if you have questions about this. Edited to change wording about moot points. :+)

I read an article about this the other week and it sounded like it was a “corporate conglomerate” sponsored study I did see the study was done by a university vet school ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Live today as if it may be your last and learn today as if you will live forever

One of the great aspects of feeding Acana and/or Orijen is that all the formulas are formulated so you can switch among them without causing stomach distress. Acana is also a bit less expensive than Orijen. Quality of both is equal. If you have a pup with Allergies new formulas are hitting the store now that have single proteins and fewer ingredients. They also have a new Paleo formula. ![]()

Yes, NC State Vet school, specifically. One Vet started the narrative based on a small sample of one specific breed. I believe they were Golden Retriever's but I may be wrong. It's important to do the study to find out if there is a problem. Regarding Grain Free vs. Non Grain free (it's really just like the caliber war), We tell our customers that unless your dog has an allergy or special need they probably to not 'need' grain free food. Personally we have fed our dogs only grain free for a long time. It's in my opinion closer to their natural diet going back to before they were domesticated. Dogs are adaptable though and can tolerate lousy quality food and do just fine. I like to hope by feeding the best quality food I can they will be healthier and live longer but it's an antidotal, not scientific decision. Grain free is more expensive because the ingredients are more expensive. It's the same conversation as which is better, 9mm or .40?

Great analogy Jeff The article I read mentioned Tufts Vet school My 15 yr old Aussie has been eating a flavor rotation each bag of grain free 4 star Fromm for 13yrs and still running around like he’s 7 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Live today as if it may be your last and learn today as if you will live forever

As Jeff noted, Diamond has had more recalls than any other producer, and several of those recalls were for salmonella. I will never purchase and feed any dog food manufactured by Diamond. Jeff, what limited ingredient dry food would you recommend that doesn't break the bank? I've been feeding my hound Wellness Simple, but am curious as to other options. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom. Appreciate the heads-up, Jeff. Good advice to keep an eye on the packaging for changes; we usually just dump the food into a bin and throw the bag away. We’ve been feeding Fromm Grain free and our GSD is doing well on it. _______________________________________________________ despite them

I know our boxers have been getting Horizon Legacy with a bit of Honest Kitchen Thrive and Nupro mixed in for the past 9 years and they are still healthy, goofy boxers (though they are getting a little bit slower from some arthritis). It's been grain free for their whole life and I think it has been very beneficial for them. Ken

Check out Pure Vita and Zignature. Both have LID. If money isn't an issue check out Acana.

We sell more Fromm than anything else. Fantastic company. They are in their 5th generation and have never had a recall. We are looking forward to visiting their factory in Wisconsin in the spring.

Royal Canin is junk and should not be fed to your dog. Tons of corn in their foods. We feed Fromm Four Star, Taste of the Wild and recently tried Chewy's American Journey which is a very good food for the price. ____________________________ NRA Benefactor Life Member GOA Life Member Arizona Citizens Defense League Life Member

Jeff, what do you know about this Chewy house brand? I could not determine specifically who makes it for them (an issue for me), but they did confirm via a phone call to customer service that Diamond is not involved in it. The different formulations get lots of positive reviews on their site, and the price is very good, but I'm not willing to commit to it based on those two attributes alone. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom.
