Sadly, I agree with you. Journalism aside, I see no hope that the two political sides will come together for much of anything. A civil war may not be in the offering (yet), but continued fighting, lying, obstruction and civil unrest will be the state of things for the foreseeable future.

Scoutmaster and I have fretted here for several years over what we perceive as the descent into the abyss of another Dark Ages.

Nothing has happened to make me think we have corrected it and gone the other way, although there are always tiny aberrations and perturbations of optimism here and there to interrupt the downward course of culture and civilization.

I'm getting closer to the end of The Complete Story of Civilization, Will and Ariel Durant's ~12,000 page, 11 volume work. It ends after the age of Napoleon. It seems that human history is replete with constant struggle between superstitution, learning, ignorance, fear, conflict, greed, courage, ambition, avarice, disappointment, injustice, in every combination. Just when you think intelligence, justice and compassion have vanquished all opposition, the tide reverses, and just when violence, ignorance and superstition seem invincible, something happens, the lights go back on and civilization is preserved, albeit not as before.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Yep... the descent into the abyss of another Dark Ages seems like it's begun.
Who knows how long it will take to come out of it? But... day by day all we can do is our small part and try to enjoy the ride.

DEMs continue full all out obstruction

http://www.breitbart.com/video...ng-obamacare-repeal/

This week on the podcast, “Pod Save America,” Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) said Democrats have a “damn good chance” to stop the GOP’s health care bill.

Schumer said, “The only way you can get on a bill is called the motion to proceed. Now usually you need 60 votes. You would need eight Democrats’ votes, but in this case, they need 52 because they are doing this process reconciliation. Our whole focus, if McConnell will bring this up right before July 4, is to get three votes against the motion to proceed, and we think we have a damn good chance.”

“This is full-scale warfare,” Schumer added, if the motion to process tactic fails, “We’re not going to be complacent or going along or business as usual.”

**************

just like obama used an aggressive advertising campaign to say how wonderful obamacare is, the Trump administration should start a PR campaign that highlights the failures, cost increases, unsustainability, etc. Start a movement to massively swing public opinion against obamacare.

And this is exactly why it is not Trump's fault if they are unable to pass legislation. Before Trump was even sworn in the democrats said they would not vote for anything put fourth by the administration. Trump needs to lead every single press conference, every single daily brief, every single interview with this fact.

Face it, the democrats hate this country. They hate you, they hate me, they hate anyone who does not fit their narrow idea of "diversity".

Maybe what happens with civilizations is fundamentally the same as what happens with animals in nature. "The fittest" is obviously much more complicated with civilizations, but, however it is measured, the more fit will overcome the less fit, swallow them up metaphorically.

I heard a commentator from Sweden (sorry, I don't remember his name) on Tucker some time ago and he said that Swedes don't believe in anything. It's a secular society that doesn't even believe in national identity. What they have for "beliefs" are a handful of PC platitudes about tolerance and diversity.

Pitted against them are the Islamic immigrants and refugees, many of whom have fanatical religious beliefs that have domain over all areas of life--individual, social, cultural-- beliefs they are willing to die for. And they are contemptuous of "tolerance" and "diversity."

It's plain to see what is happening in Sweden, and in varying degrees all across Europe. No one "stands up" to the Islamic extremists because they have no basis for standing up in opposition. All they know is that they are terrified of being labeled racist. Or xenophobic. Or intolerant. Or committing that worst of all PC sins, unfriendly to multiculturalism.

And Europe is being eaten up.

edit: you swopped out diversity for multiculturalism. My comment below was on diversity

Diversity.

I remember many years ago (20 or more) a senior manager where I worked told us our organization was switching from "EEO Equal Employment Opportunity" emphasis to "Diversity" emphasis.

He said there was a lot of backlash that things being done under the umbrella of EEO were not "equal" at all. The term diversity would have broader scope and better fit the desired goals and actions.

Unfortunately in today's environment the demand for diversity is more paramount than just picking the best people and building the most skilled & capable teams.

There's a comic side to it all, if you can overlook the devastation present and future. You have Europeans whose only values are those that allow hordes of immigrants, refugees and aliens into their countries. And those hordes regard the European PC values of tolerance, diversity, multiculturalism, as signs of their decadence and readiness for the chopping block. The Italian word commedia describes it well, because it does not suggest that you actually laugh, just that it's loony, a circus, bizarre.

Every single atheistic and secular person I've ever met believes in a wide variety of things (self, family, community, country, humanity, love, and so on), save one - supernatural gods.

That's it. The one key difference between those who believe and those who don't.

Reading anything else into is on the reader or based on individual / edge cases.

I take it you've never met any/many Swedes, or secular atheists either.

I haven't met many Swedes, but lots of Europeans, many of them friends of long standing. I was citing a Swede who said that Swedes don't believe anything. And family, and country were two things he named besides religion.

I was an atheist for a long time. I agree that it's possible to be an atheist and have all sorts of humanizing values. It's also possible to have only a handful of PC cliches.

This is where we need to get on the phone and send emails to our representatives in congress and the senate - we expect them to support the presidents agenda (pretty much the agenda they promised if we put them in control). I have my list I go through with them - immigration, o-care repeal, economy, budget, spending, tax cuts, eliminate regulations, smaller government - recently I have added I have had enough of russia collusion/contempt nonsense and I want to see them pushing back on the dems and ending this (you know act like you are the ones in majority power). I typically end with, if I do not see this out of you I will not support you at the next election.

Donald Trump is not a politician, he is a leader, politicians are a dime a dozen, leaders are priceless.
