Walmart has had a fleet of trucks delivering supplies to the area from the start. I hate InBev but they stopped canning beer and switched to water to deliver.

Somewhere in the United States today, Best Buy executives had a collective head explosion.

Which is ridiculous. Shame on the people who complained.

This is also not the first time this has happened. Other businesses have been in the same situation before.

quote:
He added that Best Buy doesn’t usually only sells individual bottles of water. The mistake was made when, given heightened demand for full cases before the storm, employees priced a case of water using the single-bottle price of each bottle for the 24 bottles in the case.

Best Buy isn't in the business of selling cases of water. An employee was simply charging the same, regular, everyday price for the water that they did sell in the store. Instead of 1 bottle at the normal price, they had 24 for sale at the normal price.

Nobody was complaining to the government about the price before. But all of a sudden I need it, they have it, and I need to force them to provide it to me for what I believe is fair.

I'm in Corpus. It made landfall just north of us. Wind was pretty damn wild as it came in. Aransas Pass, Port Aransas, Rockport have heavy damage.

It didn't initially have its doors open because the place was also flooded over the weekend due to the storm. It has been open to the public for shelter since Tuesday morning.

Yep. I'm no fan of Osteen, but I do know some people that go there. They had several feet of water inside. Many of the members volunteered to spend days in there getting it cleaned up just so they could open the doors. Many worked round the clock with little or no sleep to do so. Several of the volunteers have been there since last Thursday and haven't been home yet.

Many other churches in the area that have in the past served as shelters have water in them. My own became inaccessible due to high water all around. Plus a few roof leaks. And the water table rose so high that water was percolating up through the expansion joints in the floor.

The NWS forecast for Houston says:

quote:
Catastrophic and life-threatening flooding continues in southeastern Texas and portions of southwestern Louisiana from Harvey

Harvey has has now set a preliminary record, surpassing 50 inches for the greatest amount of measured single-storm rainfall for the continental US. Additional rainfall accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are expected to the north and east of Houston from far east Texas into southwestern Louisiana. This is producing devastating flooding. Numerous Flash Flood Warnings are in effect

Has anybody seen official projections as to how long it will take to return to pre-Harvey water levels?

Add Victoria and Port Lavaca to the list.

I'm grateful I only saw it as a cat 2. I'll need a roof, but damn, there's people needing a home. Take care, those in harm's way. God be with those affected and those about to be.

Did you loose your roof completely? Like decking? Or did you manage to get away with "just" shingles and what not peeling off? Hopefully the later so you don't have much inside damage. Prayers for all of you.

Trying to get some pallets of water and canned goods gathered to hopefully send down your way.

Chris

How skanky is the water, really, that has made it inside folks' places? The TV people talk like it's chocked full of sewage and all manner of gross. I mean, I'm sure it varies, and surely not something you'd want to drink, but to hear the newscasters...

It contains a mix of sewage, garbage, animal feces, plants, plant waste, and every other contaminant that was on the ground (e.g., oil, pesticides, petroleum), plus anything in river sediments that got stirred up.

It doesn't take a great deal of this stuff to contaminate a great quantity of stormwater.

In short, its all kinds of skanky and gross, and I wouldn't wade in it unless I had to.

Move all your furniture and look around at what is underneath it, for starters.

Then have the water from your back yard where your dog shits seep in.

Of course your sewer line might have broken / backed up.

All that trash from the cans, and the yards, and whatever people just leave around...

Etc, etc

I think you'll get the picture.

Not to get off topic, but has anyone been seeing the price of gasoline going up? My daughter said people in Frisco, north of Dallas, are lined up at the pumps and some places are sold out. I just filled up on the other side of town from where she is and the lines were normal as I expected.

I don't remember if there were any shortages after Katrina. I try to keep the tank full anyway so I'm good for a few weeks if the supplies get slowed down temporarily.
