Wow. I read about flooding but the visuals are far more impactful. Where does all the water come from? Surely it's not just rain. Is there a map that shows the area extent of flooding?

That storm dumped at least 15 trillion gallons of water here. It was a water relocating machine, sourced directly from the Gulf of Mexico. At some point the engineering limits of the drainage systems are exceeded, rain continues to fall and the water has no place to go but up.

In our neighborhood I could see standing water in the storm drains by 3:00pm Monday afternoon. Then as the rain continued and the creek behind us rose so did the water in our streets. Had it crested two feet higher as initially predicted it would've overflowed the upper banks behind our section and free flowed into the neighborhood. We were really lucky. In the pic below you can see the last bit of bank that kept it from advancing further and spilling over.

I grew up on the Chesapeake Bay. It's not like I haven't seen flooding or the occasional hurricane.

That said what you guys are seeing is worse then the worst I have ever seen which ironically was when we had our middle TN floods in 2010. Yes the worst floods I have seen were when I moved to a landlocked state .... go figure.

I had a buddy call me from MD concerned and this is what he said. "I just saw a fucking school floating down the road on the news.....are you ok?" So what I am saying is I know how terrifying and destructive flooding can me and my heart goes out.

I have talked to all my Houston friends and they are dry and safe but Jesus I am sorry for those who are not. Trying to gather bottled water and canned goods to send your way. Hope you guys see sunshine and a bit of a drought sooner then later.

Take Care, Shoot Safe,
Chris

Yeah, it's pretty much all rain. The majority of flooding didn't come from a storm surge in this case like other big storms; it came from just a butt load of rain.

How skanky is the water, really, that has made it inside folks' places? The TV people talk like it's chocked full of sewage and all manner of gross. I mean, I'm sure it varies, and surely not something you'd want to drink, but to hear the newscasters...

Well, when it came out of the storm drains and up over the side walk it did smell like sewage here. As bad as my kiddo wanted to play in it there was no way I was letting him get in it.

We were working recovery yesterday and talked to the family that lived there. The wife told us that sewage started bubbling up through the drains once the water level got up above the level of the shower and tub drains. The wet carpet reeked of it when pulling it out of the house.

But things are pretty flat around here. A lot of waste water treatment plants likely were submerged. Especially given they're typically built in low areas in the first place. So I'm sure there were plenty of sewer bass floating around out there.

The stuff in the water is why I tell anyone who gets even a minor cut or scrape to go to the clinic. The risk of infection is sky high right now.

How many feet of water is it to flood the overpass on the far side? To put that much standing water on a flat plain is unimaginable. But it's also massively impressive to see how nature refreshes and maintains a healthy environment.

I believe California flooded like this in the 1862?

Here's a shot of their crew from earlier today.

Yep those guys look like Texans that I see around here.

Good on your uncle to donate his crews! That is generosity, compassion and being the hands and feet of Christ.

MySA did a bit where they superimposed the TX flooding map on other parts of the country to show the impact. Just for a sense of scale.

I think we should name the mass of volunteers and rescuers "The Deplorable Army and Navy" in honor of Hillary Clinton. The world is seeing what the deplorables are all about: not waiting for the govt to come to the rescue, showing love and respect for other human beings, taking risks for our fellow man and showing strength and compassion in the face of tragedy. Leftists heads are exploding as the stereotypes their stooges in the media, Hollywood and college campuses have worked hard to promote are being disproved.

The left will lay low for a while and then resume their hate campaign.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Many of the cars from Katrina ended up in third world countries. Saw a special on that. Some of the cars still had Louisiana plates on them.

My Dad is retired from autobody, and in his opinion they should put them in the car crusher not scrap them out. Scrap yards will pull panels (e.g. quarter panel), doors, hoods, etc. off flooded cars and sell as used parts w/o disclosing they were submerged. Many insurance companies require using used parts, and what happens is the back side (i.e. the side the body shop doesn't paint) of the panel, lips of panels, etc. rusts out in 12 months.

Even worse, they'll sell off electrical components that have been submerged and your mechanic will be chasing electrical gremlins.
