Tornado warnings. Still have power. Raining off and on. No flooding in immediate area.

It has been raining all day with only mild gusts of wind. But about 20 minutes ago the intensity increased. From the radar it looks like Harvey is heading towards central Texas.

Hang in there H-Town, looks like one hell of a line of thunderstorms stacked up to the south and rolling through all night. I have friends in a couple of different parts of town reporting tornado activity and 4" per hour rainfall.

In my part of town, the worst I've had since this morning was 0.5" per hour, and this morning's worst was 1.5" per hour. The good news is the two rivers (one east and one west of me) that are flood prone have been holding steady the past 7 hours. Swales in my yard are still working well, and the street drainage is still working well. My county is divided into precincts and my precinct only has 7 roads under water.

Lots of tornado warnings have been issued and cancelled throughout the day. I'm 70 miles from the Galveston sea wall, but there is still 11 NWS alerts for my area.

Two Burglars Shot In Different Burglaries During Hurricane

Corpus Christi, TX – Two suspects were shot by homeowners in two separate incidents in Houston and Corpus Christi during Hurricane Harvey.

In one incident, an intruder was shot by a Southside homeowner after he broke into the home as Hurricane Harvey made landfall.

The incident occurred on Friday, August 25, about 11 PM in the 7100 block of Ficus Court, near Yorktown Boulevard, according to the Caller-Times. Police officers responded to a home for a report of an intruder in the home.

Upon their arrival, they found the suspect inside the home, with a gunshot wound to his head. Police said that the suspect had broken into the home, and the homeowner had shot him. The incident occurred about an hour after the Category 4 Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Corpus Christi.

The suspect’s name and the homeowner’s name have not been released. It isn’t known if the resident had power when the incident occurred. The suspect was transported to Christus Spohn Hospital Shoreline for treatment. His condition is not known. No other injuries were reported. The Corpus Christi Police Department is conducting the ongoing investigation.

The second incident occurred in Houston about 3 AM in the 6900 block of Avenue T on Saturday, August 26. Police said that an intruder was trying to break into a home in Houston’s Greater East End, and was shot by the homeowner, according to The Houston Chronicle. The intruder was reported to have been killed by the homeowner.

No further information has been released, and the Houston Police Department is conducting the ongoing investigation.

Burglars might want to think twice before they try to burglarize homes in a state where people are armed and willing to ride out the storm.

From radar it looks like the 59 North corridor is in for a rough couple of hours. My parents are outside of Cleveland and a there is a heavy band coming up 59 now that extends all the way out into the gulf. Seems the SW part of town got the worst of it earlier and now the NE part of town is about to get hammered.

There is a big band from Galveston to Woodlands right now (lots of red and darker). Cleveland looks like it's north of it. Accuweather's minutecast says it'll be rockin' and rollin' at my house the next 2 hours.

There are a couple more bands over the Greater Houston area closer to the eye. Friends in northwest, west, Heights, southwest are reporting street flooding. They've also had a lot more tornadoes.

We've had non-stop bands since my 10:30 post which 3.17" in 3.5 hours (peak was 1.66 in per hour). I'm staying up another half hour which is the estimated time this band will pass.

Some parts of Houston people's homes are flooding and they're heading into their attics. News is telling people to bring axes / saws with them so they can get on the roof if the flood makes it into the attic.

Watching the late night local CBS news coverage is astounding. They're interviewing stranded motorists at gas stations. Here are some of the reasons for being out:
  • 40 something couple drove from NW houston to SE houston (pasadena) to go to a club. Didn't even make it as the exit from the freeway was flooded. SE Houston floods easily and both the reporter and news desk people were dumbfounded.
  • 20 something guy went to a bar in Channelview (very few Houston suburbs floods as easily as Channelview) to watch the Mayweather / McGregor fight. Genius lives in Galveston.
  • 20 something single mom with kids in car stranded because they went to a bar in Channelview to watch the Mayweather / McGregor fight. The fight started after 11 PM local time.

It's really difficult to see flooded water at night, and the driving rain from the bands made visibility shit. They've been saying for days to shelter in place and don't be on the roads.

Here is the traffic map (blue rain drops are flooded highways, and red circle with white dash is close highways):

^^^ Most of the red circles with white bars are closed locations (and not all are necessarily freeway closures) due to constructions, have been there forever, and have nothing to do with the rain/high waters. Wink

Beltway 8 North is remarkably free of high waters, compared to the rest of the city. Which is fine with me, because that's my route to work this morning.

4 1/2" last night and still coming down hard. Expecting water in the house within a few hours. Many friends in the area already have flooding in their homes.

You are talking about the 4th largest city in the country. The entire effected region probably 10 million plus people. That's not an easy call to make and where do they go? It's a bad situation and the rain is perhaps only half over. This could continue through the middle of the week.

My aunt's house has knee deep water she lives by HW3 and Edgebrook the area Channel 13 keeps showing Task Force 1 make water rescues at. My friend's daughter has water in her newly remodeled house.
There will end up being a quarter to half a million houses flooded if this keeps up for 3 more days, with Harvey staying put by Victoria.

Clear Creek was so flooded it was across I-45 last night. That's a LOT of water. We were fortunate that the water came up in our yards, front and back, but the rains slowed and it began to recede. Many in the area were not so lucky. I put on my high water boots and went to check and make sure the storm drains weren't stopped up with debris. They were clear. On a day like this, you can walk down the street wearing a bathing suit, goulashes, a cowboy hat, and carrying a rake and no one thinks it odd. If you've been watching Fox 26, that Coast Guard helo doing rescues in Dickinson has flown over my head several times. It's chest deep or more on 517 at the freeway. A weather station about a mile from here reported over 20" of rain in 12 hours. Our average annual rainfall is 50".

Still waiting to hear from some friends who live close to Clear Lake.

But look on the bright side, I'm sure there will soon be some great deals on some "low mileage, gently used" cars in about a month or so.
