An easy one, you've had to play whack a mole more than once.

Back to the original subject.
Can the original posters go back and edit their posts once they are sold or item found and replace the title with "SOLD" or "FOUND" to make things easier for you to edit and us to see?
I noticed that even after your pruning, there are 10 pages in this section and without reading through each post you can only go by age to see if they are likely to be active.

Of course they can and this has been a topic in the past. I think everyone should for the courtesy of others.

The member is out 500 bucks because he was contacted him by someone who said they were a particular forum member. The guy failed to confirm this and he has paid for his foolishness.

This affects the forum, because successful scams keep these assholes coming back. How many times have I said that if you're not careful, you will get ripped off? How many times have I said that you must assume everyone who contacts you about an ad of yours is looking to steal from you?

You must confirm that whoever is contacting you is who they say they are, by emailing them at the email address in their profile, and then asking them to post in your ad.

Here, let's say it again:

You must confirm that whoever is contacting you is who they say they are, by emailing them at the email address in their profile, and then asking them to post in your ad.

No email address in their profile? Walk away. They won't post in your ad? Walk away.

If you fail to do these things, just wave goodbye to your money, and learn to love the feeling of getting fucked in the ass. You feel stupid when you fall for this shit? Good. You damn well should feel stupid, because you have no excuse.

I started to say "No way!" after all you have done in preaching to us about this, but then stopped to consider how IQs seem to have fallen so drastically over the past 2 years and changed my mind.

Thanks again for all you do for us Para!

So I'm guessing he was contacted by email by someone claiming to be a certain member vs a response in the thread by that person?

If so, then the method of communication is a warning flag, verify the email....

If you get an email on a classified and see no post, then simply ask them to reply to you in the thread, if it's not really that member they won't be able to reply in the thread, it's a simple step that may save you money..

Of course if you have a member who is a scammer you need to dig further, a real member of this board who isn't scamming you will know what's going on and the reason for specific requests and will not be bothered by responding in kind.

We have quite a bit of member to member trust on SF, it's clear with the number of times members have ponied up to help others in need.

Scammers look for this type of empathy and trust and use it to prey on people.

One need only take a look at the classifieds and see how many "views" and the short time an add is been up, as well as the number of "guests" online at any one time. Usually 2 to 3 times as many as members online at any given time to get an idea of how many rats are running around the place.

That is not a reflection on the homeowner, but the prolific vermin that is attracted to the "nice things".

The solution is not making it harder to use the board, it is trying to get the members to understand the problem is the members that are the 1/2 of the equation with all the power to prevent the fraud.

I retired from IT, and I spent so much time trying to "protect" the system intended for people to utilize to multiply their force in their work efforts, from the people using it.

And the more I would do to "prevent" exploits to the system, the more these people would expect me to do more, so they could do less.

It is most frustrating to be of the mind that each person should be both responsible, and free to act autonomously, while having to actually be the opposite, taking the responsibility from them, and the freedom to do whatever required to use the system to their benefit.

And the greater the effort to "protect", the more my efforts were seen as being "overbearing and restrictive".

To the point that I called it done, and at great cost to myself.

I fully understand why Para considers shutting the classifieds down. Not to protect people from being scammed, but to prevent HIS place from being used for such activities.

There is only one person who can prevent scams, while still permitting the classifieds to exist. That is the member that engages in any transaction.

Do not be in such a hurry to make a buck or get the greatest deal. It is that simple.

And rhetorically; "What does Para get out of the Classifieds at the end of each day?" And "Why should he have to endure any of this crap?"

If you won't be mindful of your own possible loss, at least consider the crap that he ends up cleaning.

(and I've probably said too much, again.)

Just curious boss... why only Google? I normally use DuckDuckGo for my searches and am wondering why you feel Google is superior?

Thanks again for all you do!

Edit: I think I answered my own question. Just ran a DuckDuckGo search on that e-mail address and it turned up nada... nothing more than a bunch of hits in a foreign language. Most interesting...

As you saw for yourself, only Google returned search results on that email address. I don't know the specific reasons why this is so.

I'm glad you brought this to my/our attention as I never would have guessed such a difference in search engines!

This Asshat tried to get me on the P220 Carry I was looking for. He wouldn't post in the listing that he contacted me and he never responded to me again when I said there are 3 things that must be done by him to complete the transaction. 1-Post in ad that he made me an offer 2-scan his license and a pic of it next to the gun showing the serial# and send it to my FFL dealer 3-text me pics from his phone# of the gun and serial# showing next to MY WTB listing on his screen logged into Sigforum---Never heard another word from him or the other 2 thieves that tried to get me. The biggest power they have guys is playing on our greed! They usually offer what we're looking for at better than a good price, but a GREAT PRICE! The temptation of THE DEAL is usually what gets us in trouble. TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE IS JUST THAT!

Para

Just wanted to say thanks for giving us a place to hang out. I can't imagine the work it takes to keep this place going. Sorry the assholes make it harder.

Thank you.

I dont know if this software has the feature built in, but a rating system seems to work pretty well. Pretty good way to tell if someone is a scammer or too new to trust. Of course there are ways around it but in my experience they work pretty well. Just my 2c.

Also, being a lurker for 10+ odd years this board has hands down had the most honest member community, but it seems society getting gradually worse is taking its toll. Hats off to Para for keeping this one of the best Sig resources on the net.
