Sidibe backed Smollett’s initial version of events, instead blaming the media for questioning his story.

My thoughts as well. I think he is too proud/arrogant to accept what he has done. I think he'd rather believe his own lie which is a mental illness. I think if he were forced to suffer the full consequences of his behaviors he'd take the weak way out because he is weak.
