If they were passing on the credit card charge then they are clairvoyant. I didn't pay online. I might have paid cash when I got there. I just put the order in. The virtual equivalent of picking up the phone and having them write it down, which is exactly what I will do next time. A buck is a buck.

Has anybody ever tried entering a negative amount on the custom option to see if it reduces your bill?

Have gotten used to it - the ask anyway, however I almost always decline (and have no regrets) if it is for picking up take out or or counter service. Don't care what they or anyone else thinks.

I'd picked "Custom" and literally give them my two cents.

I spent close to $120 a couple of weeks ago on ribs and brisket for my sister’s birthday. No sides. Just meat in an aluminum tray. Order online. Walk up to the window to pick it up. Suggested 20% tip. Sorry. Packaging is a cost of doing business and I’ll be damned if I give you better than $20 to hand it to me.

I Am The Walrus |
At the Firehouse that V-Tail and I sometimes frequent for lunch, if they give us the military discount, I just kick that money back to the employees via tip. The military discount isn't obligated so I just take their money to give it back to their employees. They have a nice group of employees, though. They're friendly, quick and keep the place very clean considering how much traffic they get. _____________

I went to book a hotel two days ago, can't remember the third party booking site, and they asked for a tip before final checkout. Gee, I wonder if they were calling the hotel and trying to wrangle a great price out of them for me. No, the price was the same as when I clicked on it in the first place, which is why I booked there. If they don't have enough margin built into their pricing, that'a a "their problem," not a "my problem."

I remain convinced that the terminal makers and website creators are rigging all these terminals and websites to beg for tips and they are taking a cut of them and it’s not going to the workers you may think you’re tipping. This line from the article I posted a couple days ago is very telling:
We are all being taken advantage of here.

It makes sense, in a roundabout way. Most credit card providers take a percentage of the sale as a service fee. Tipping is just flat profit for them. "The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy." "I did," said Ford, "it is." "So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards." "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Made from a different mold |
Entirely possible, but what happens when people quit tipping altogether? 50% of 0 is $0. Eventually the customer is gonna stop eating at these establishments and the owners will be left in the lurch. If I were a business owner, I'd be very careful not to use software that drives my customers away. If this is what is happening, owners are still responsible. They are the ones making the decision to use hardware/software with that kind of bullshit built in. I am unsympathetic. ___________________________ No thanks, I've already got a penguin.

In Puerto Rico credit card payments are made at the table using a wireless terminal. They bring the unit over, you put your card in and complete the transaction yourself. The standard tipping options (10%, 15%, 20%, etc) with corresponding dollar amounts are calculated on the food and beverage cost, not the taxes. It's weird getting a bill for $100 with taxes included and the tip is $17 and change if 20% is selected. Normally I'd tip $20 on the $100 so if there's a 25% option I'd select it if the service was satisfactory. It comes out to about $22-23 and for an extra couple of bucks it makes their day. Most of the servers I've had in Puerto Rico went above and beyond because they really rely on those tips so every little bit helps. When I do takeout here half of the servers here will process the payment at point of sale and automatically click "no tip" when the option comes up. The other half will ask or hand the wireless payment terminal over to pick the option and I'll either politely decline or select "no tip." I've never had an issue with any of the places I regularly frequent and the staff is always friendly and welcoming. When I do eat in and ask for more to go I will tip on the food to go. I probably don't have to but as I mentioned before for a couple of extra bucks it makes their day.

But, but, butt... that's ONLY an extra $24.00! The janitors and dishwashers have to eat too! I hear you though, unless it's sit-down service, or something special is done, there is no tip from me! ____________________________ Bill R. ^^^^ If I see that, the general tip will go down. For carry out, I'll tip $5.00 for the kitchen team. Last weekend we had a group of 5 go to a BBQ joint for linner. The bill came to $150 w/o alcohol. Typically we would tip 20% but there was no way we received $30 of service. The tip was cut to $20.
