Happy Thanksgiving to you also, Para and everyone else.

I'd like to pass on something I learned. Some people feel surly about giving thanks on Thanksgiving thinking they have nothing to give thanks about.

But in 1621 when the first Thanksgiving celebration was held with the Pilgrims, the preceding winter had been a harsh one. Seventy-eight percent of the women who traveled on the Mayflower had perished that winter, leaving only around 50 colonists to attend the celebration. According to eyewitness accounts, among the pilgrims, there were only 22 men, just four women, and over 25 children and teenagers. Link

The US has celebrated Thanksgiving every year since Abraham Lincoln's proclamation of 1863. 1863 was in the middle of the US Civil War which lasted from 1861 and 1865. The number of soldiers who died between 1861 and 1865 is estimated to be 620,000 - a number approximately equal to the total of American fatalities in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War, combined. Link

I think the lesson of Thanksgiving is to find something to be thankful about even in the midst of despair.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I have so much to be thankful for every day. This week is special because both of our children and their families are here to celebrate our new home, eat to much and enjoy each others company.
