I wonder if these electric cars will eventually bite the manufacturers in the ass because of the long term reliability.

Most people get rid of their car once it starts becoming unreliable. Fear of a big expense of an engine or transmission can also do it. Those two expenses are basically non existent and electric cars are unlikely to strand you because they won’t start.

With Tesla already working on a million mile battery I think people will hang onto their cars far longer than they do today.

That's a valid point. Having worked at a lobbyist on Capitol Hill for the auto industry many years back, I can confirm that the dealers make their livelihood on F&I (finance and insurance/warranty) and Service. Take away the lucrative service business and it changes the calculus for dealers. Manufacturers are basically knocking the profit motives out of the local dealer model (which I'm ok with because 2/3 of them lack scruples in my personal experience).

Either way still significantly cheaper than gas.

Problem right now is that even used Model 3s 2-3 years old are selling basically at the cost of a brand new one. Only reason I bought new. Plus buying new you get the 120K warranty on the powertrain (Battery degradation guarantee & motor coverage).

This is what I wanted to know. Thanks!

I guess it depends on how you define a sedan but there are several Porsche Panameras and even Cayenes that were faster than the Plaid..

It is however the fastest EV to set a time so far.

I personally haven’t driven over 300 miles in one sitting in my entire life. I’m not wasting my precious vacation time staring out a car window for several days of my vacation. If I can’t get their in half a day I’m flying.

Let’s say you go to grandma’s once a year and she honestly does live across the country. It’s not that expensive to rent a big comfy car and put 2000 miles on the rental.

You calling them extreme examples does not actually make examples outside of your experience extreme. I can’t fly with a wife, three kids, and a large dog. I’m not sure what you mean by 300 miles in one sitting. In November, I drove 4, 300 mile non-stop trips. In August, I did 1,600 miles in two days towing a boat. I did the same in June. This was a slow year for us because of COVID. slabsides45’s question was legitimate and respectfully asked. Unfortunately, an answer has yet to be provided. I know I can add 400 miles of range to my truck in 3 minutes at a properly functioning normal pump. It’s even faster if I use the big boy truck pumps.

The idea that people can just go rent ICE cars when they need to is ludicrous. You really think rental companies will have enough cars for all the people that drive to grandma’s house for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter and just have those cars sit unused the rest of the year?

Where did anyone say that EV’s will work for every single car owner?

I would say the vast majority of people probably live within one charge (800 miles) away from grandma. So for the vast majority of families at least one of their cars could be an EV right now and that percentage will continue to improve right along with the improvements in batteries.

Where did you answer the question posted by the person you quoted instead of posting your usual "extreme example" followed by "just rent a car" response when someone questions how long charging on the road take or how hard is it to find a place to charge?

My e550 cabrio got 17mpg on the highway. Lovely car, but with all costs factored in, about 94¢ per mile.

My 3P is a small fraction of that(I have a 60 mile commute in Myrtle)

Admittedly, part of that is charging at work, using excess power, which the company has to buy, whether or not it is used.

Tesla owners are you still enjoying them and how has maintenance and reliability been??????

Contemplating grabbing a 2022 Model 3 Long Range AWD in the 50-60k mile range.
They can be had all day long under $20k and still have 4-5 years and 60k miles left on the battery drive warranty.

Would just be an around town commuter. Some trips to Cincy (110 miles one way) but that’s about it. I only see myself charging at home.
I already have 240 outlets in the garage and would likely use the mobile connector as I have no need for an install.

Unless there is a reason for the upgraded home charger.
We have some of the cheapest electricity rates in the country.

Worried about repair costs and insurance rates.

Don't some/most EVs go through tires quicker than their ICE counterparts? Extra weight & tons of torque.

Model S 22,000 miles only expense is electricity and a new set of tires recently. FSD has gotten so friken good that I literally would not own ANY other car other than Tesla. The car is a blast to drive during the few times that I am not on FSD and when using FSD it is out of this world. When I say I would not own any other car what I mean is if you were to offer to GIVE me any other car and I had to keep that car and that was my only car (ie I couldn't sell it and pocket the money and buy a Model S) I would literally take the Model S over ANY other car. The self driving is THAT GOOD. Do not compare Tesla FSD to any of the other driver assist system and think you know what I am talking about. After a match, I walk out to the car, it unlocks the doors as I approach, I open my car door sit down in seat, the car recognizes me by my phone, I literally "tell" it to "navigate home" and it drives me 45 miles across Dallas and into my driveway regardless of traffic, weather, etc. I will never have a car without it again. Side note when I say it recognizes me by my phone it adjusts everything about the car from ride configuration, acceleration preferences, driving dynamics, speed limit preferences, seats, HVAC, entertainment preferences and a lot more. I can get into my father's Model S and because I am an authorized driver, his car recognizes my phone and sets itself up as if I was getting into my car.

I would second getting one, but think leasing one would be a better idea.

Tesla seems to still be learning how to build cars - admittedly, my 22 3P is vastly better than my 19 was.

My 22 had a few drivers door seal replacements before it seems to have finally been installed right.

Currently, it’s eating windshield wipers every 6 weeks, but that might be the rainx windshield fluid.

Other than that, it’s been a very reliable car.

Now, where the scooter idiots hit it, isn’t fixed - and won’t be.

Essentially, body damage is so expensive, if it bothers you, just change cars.

Insurance is idiotic.

Model Y Long Range here.
We have about 15K on it so far and love it.
Last Christmas we drove from NC to NH, about 800 miles each way.The temps got down to 4 degrees overnight in PA and the car did fantastically! Yes it did use more energy but having the ability to have the car pre warmed for us before we left the hotel was an added bonus!

We have other ICE vehicles and sometimes we use them but for everyday driving the Y is our first choice.

Since i started this thread. All I've done is add windshield washer fluid and rotate the tires on the ole girl. Almost x4 years into ownership and no complaints. She's got 27K miles on her and I've had zero issues.

Just drive it... wash it.. top off the washer fluid. That's it. I've still got probably half the life on the tires if I had to guess that came with it.

I have heard that Tesla recommends against using Rainx. However... I haven't checked the manual or fact checked. So take it with a grain of salt.

Not just that. You have to buy EV rated tires and they are more than regular tires.

$850 a set for Conti DWS06 with 50k mile tread life warranty.
My tundra tires run about $1500.
