12131, this time I think I'll take advantage of your amazing generosity and enter your karma.

I was a Naval reservist from 2002 to 2016. I just got out. One of my fondest memories of being in uniform was during an Active Duty Training in New Orleans. It was the summer just before Katrina hit. I was able to take the entire day and spend it at the WWII D-Day museum there.

I was in uniform engrossed in one of the exhibits when an older gentleman standing to my left (a member of the greatest generation and a vet given the hat he was wearing) said to me, "there really is no greater honor than to serve under this flag and for this great country, eh, Lieutenant?" That's paraphrasing a bit, but that's the gist of it.

After a brief pause, I simply answered, "No, sir. There truly isn't." He then gave me a small smile and a wink and continued on through the museum. Out of all those years, that's my favorite memory wearing the uniform.

I spent about six hours in that museum by the way before they kicked me out because they were closing.

What an incredible offer!

Desert Storm vet here. This reminds me that around Veteran's Day every year I try to donate to the VFW unmet needs program.

Thank you for this great opportunity. Marine from 10/70 - 10/90 with a wonderful year in Vietnam as a member of the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club.

Probably the most unusual event during that year was that one month, I was flying as a door gunner in a CH-46 around the Quang-Tri area and the next month the LPH I was on was deployed to Haiphong Harbor for Operation End Sweep. We used our Ch-46's and 53's to attempt to clear all of the mines that we had previously dropped in the harbor.

Standing on the flight deck watching the North Vietnamese gunboats circle our ship while we were stationary in the water was a little unnerving. Their guns were always fixed on our ship as they circled. We actually detonated a couple of mines, but I'm confident they were planted for the publicity.

Once again, Thank You.

Amazing Karma 12131, you are a very generous person. Please enter me in this.
My stories involve retrieving tanks that broke down in the field with an M88 Tank retriever. Best story was back in the early 70's we went to retrieve an M60 that went into a swamp...when we arrived the only thing visible was about 12" of the antenna sticking out of the mud and the crew sitting on the side of the road. Needless to say we recovered the crew but the tank was lost.
I'll bet that tank is still there today!

Thanks for the opportunity to enter this karma!

Please add me to the karma, I could use it as my department is finally going to allow personally owned/department approved rifle.

US Air Force Security Police Law Enforcement Specialist, ended up as a E5 Staff Sergeant. Stationed at Wheeler AFB HI from March 1985 to July 1988 and then at Scott AFB from July 1988 to July 1989. RIFed (Reduction in Force) out due to Graham/Rudman bill part of that whole cutting the armed Forces from Reagan years.

Lots of stories......some are even safe to read at work, near wife/girlfriend and small children. Big Grin

Here is a cluster foxtrot that happened one night: big huge drunk Samoan and his criminal girlfirend stole the flightline ready CRASH truck and took it on a joyride, where he ended up taking out 5 parked cars before he crashed (I know the irony of the CRASH truck actually crashing). The Samoan and his girlfriend take off on foot with the girlfriend getting over the fence and off base. So now have HPD searching for her. One the SPs looking for her ended up commandeering a tracked quad 50 caliber vehicle coming out of Schofield Barracks and caught up to her. The Samoan was later captured during a knockdown drag out fight with him (just for the record normal Mace and Pepper Spray does NOT work on Samoan....maybe bear pepper spray might work). So I am the Desk Sergeant that night and my shift supervisor and I am on the phone with the NCOIC of Law Enforcement (he wanted to be briefed on everything and had a "Now Chewing" ticket box instead of a "Now Serving" ticket box outside his office). We start to tell him what happened when the NCOIC stops us and says, "Stop right there. If you tell me what happened, I will make you write it up that way. I am going to leave you with a piece of advice before I hang up; Sometimes, not often, but every now and then you have to write the report the way it should of happened instead of the way it happened."

It took the whole shift two days to write up what happened.

I can’t resist. Dad was WW2; brother Vietnam era Army, cousins Marine and Army, and me, USAF, but not considered a Vet. I did join at the end of the VN war, just didn’t get to stay around long enough.
Thanks for chance.
