Into what type of jazz style would someone like Coltrane be categorized? Perhaps also Thelonius Monk? Styles where instruments may be playing somewhat independently with discordant notes. What about Stan Getz? Or Art Pepper? Houston Person / Ron Carter? I'm finding I'm more inclined towards the latter style of jazz than the former but not sure what genre to call it when I go searching for similar types of artists. Don´t really know what to answer, Cool maybe but i peek at the jazznblues.club webpage when looking for references and connected artists and albums. I love Cool but not particularly fond of Bossa. Seems a contradiction when talking about Getz. Usually, when i like an album i check each and every member of the band to see where the particular style i like comes from and then follow that artist. I have always referred to it in general terms as "bebop" jazz, guys like Charlie Parker, Coltrane, Monk, early Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespe, etc. Later in the 50s when the melodies and playing calmed down a bit, the term "cool jazz" was bantered about, the epitome of this music was Davis' Kind of Blue album. The music from this period is still a favorite, gets more airplay in my household than any other genre of music. Stan Getz is mostly cool jazz. Less group improvisation, more formally written out pieces of music, slower tempos than bebop, more classical music elements. And of course, he did a lot of samba and bossa nova stuff. I'm gonna vote for the funniest frog with the loudest croak on the highest log. | |||

Thanks guys - sounds like cool jazz is what I'm seeking. I'll look into bebop as well. Neither term is familiar to me. I like samba and bossa too, but I can only take them in short bursts. After about an hour, I feel like I've eaten too much sugar or something. I really like Getz and Pepper these days, also Houston Person/Ron Carter. I find Getz last live performance with Barron exceptional in its coolness. Also moving, knowing he died no long afterwards. The original edited People Time (double CD album) is much better than the later full concert edition. Sounds like Cool Jazz and West Coast Jazz would be good places for you to start. I really love West Coast Jazz. I'm generally not a fan of Hard Bop. I like some melody line and some gentle harmonies. I listen to jazz to relax and the edge on Hard Bop and Post Bop don't really accomplish that for me. I particularly like West Coast Jazz pianists. It is also hard to beat Chet Baker for relaxation. There were occasionally joined by a sax player (Sadao Watanabe and others). Most enjoyable. This brings me to Sadao playing in "Charlie Parker mode" which is different of the rest of his other multiple styles. He also does Bossa. Finally, the late Charlie Watts (Rolling Stones) jazz groups were excellent and also Charlie Parker´s influenced. I don't know how to categorize it, but if you enjoy Stan Getz, Art Pepper, and Houston Person, you may want to check out Ben Webster, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and Scott Hamilton.
