Mrs. Angus and I just returned from watching it.

She liked it, I LOVED it.

The acting was superb. It reminded me of movies from the 60's and 70's. Slow paced with character development.

Most people now have to have a gun fight every 15 seconds to stay entertained.

This movie was like sipping a great glass of wine instead of shotgunning a 12 pack of bud.

I plan on seeing it again in theaters.

I bought a digital copy from Amazon today and watched it by myself since the kids were in school.

Excellent film.

the Indians were always at war with each other, they were never the Rousseau "Noble Savage".

And if they had had a decent department of homeland security, and a good border patrol, us Europeans would have been greased on the beach.

The movie kept my attention. I really thought it was like a mix of No Country for Old men and the Revenant. I saw it at the dollar theater so my standards aren't real high for paying a dollar to see it. I like Christian Bale movies, but it was no batman.

I just watched it last night, and really liked it. I wish I would have made it out and seen it on the big screen.

It was a atunning film on the big screen. The viewing room just needs to be blacked out. It’s not a film to watch in the day in a bright room.

Thanks for bumping the thread. I need to purchase the film tomorrow and will. Hopefully offered in 4K

I saw it the other night on DVD and enjoyed it. The cinematography really made the group small in the vastness of the west.

Reviews on sites like IMDB point out how it's not historically accurate, etc., but I didn't rent it for a history lesson.

I finally saw Hostiles this weekend. Rented it on-demand.
Christian Bale was great. Really good actor.

The movie was a bit slow and a bit over-dramatic at times.
But I enjoyed that the movie wasn't over-the-top with special effects or non-stop gun fighting.

It explored the emotions of fighting an enemy for years, just to figure out maybe we're not so different.

The gun fighting was some of the most realistic that I've seen in a movie. The single-action revolvers actually recoiled when fired. The gunshots sounded real. How many movies have you seen where gunshots sound weak? Not this movie.

It wasn't perfect. I don't think anyone reloaded their weapon the entire movie. That always bugs me.

But yeah, it's worth seeing.
I watched it twice since I had a two-day rental.
The first time with my GF, (who asked a lot of questions throughout the movie), and once this afternoon by myself. I enjoyed it more the second time since I could concentrate on the movie more. There's a lot of dialog that is spoken quietly that I had a hard time hearing, even with no one asking me questions.

(GF was not born in the U.S., so had a lot of questions regarding the Indian wars.)

I guess I'll be the odd man out. I wanted to turn it off halfway through, but didn't. I wish I had.

They stole a plot from Lonesome Dove, added some new actors, changed the story line a little, and failed.

Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike acted well, but the movie failed miserably. It was pathetically predictable in its Indian apologetics and, frankly, that turned me off almost immediately.

Kind of sorry I paid $4.99 to see it as I expected much more.

I agree. At points I turned it up very loud and still don't know what was said. I had to read a plot synopsis to find out.

Seems like a lot of movies have loud digital effects and sound, but you can't hear the damn talking.

I feel the exact same way. I thought I might be missing something, tried to watch it a second time and turned it off half way through.

The wife and I watched it over the weekend and were a little disappointed. We both thought it was boring.

Re: the no reloading of guns....

That’s because they had several revolvers.

If you look closely at Bale from behind you can see he has another revolver on the small of his back, and I believe he had one in the front of his belt too

If you watch the gun fight with the Comanche at one point you can see him firing a revolver while he holds another (presumably the spent one, it was later in the fight) in the same hand he has the reins in by the barrel

I agree it was very, very hard to hear what was said in many instances. So much so that, since I was watching in bed while my wife was asleep, I turned the subtitles on.

I enjoyed it. But I can also see the validity of the complaints raised here.

I also thought it a little implausible that Rosamund Pike’s character would be allowed to stay with the group....for exactly what we saw happen. In the modern mi,Italy chain of command the answer would be “no...they’re supposed to protect them...I don’t need them having to protect you as well.” I get it was a different time, but it’s not like leaving her at the fort was a death sentence....whereas bringing her with them very nearly was, on several occasions.

not a bad movie. worth it just for the scenery.

i took the movie to show a lot of people killed a lot of other people. didn't really say one was 'right' the other 'wrong'
