Yep. Notice that even Peter Dinklage, arguably the best actor in the series, was really struggling during that episode, especially the awful "election council" scene. Good actors can only do so much with bad writing.

Honestly, it was worth the time that I invested in it. It was enjoyable, for the most part. Especially in the earlier seasons. The clunky end doesn't totally negate the other things they did very well. Most of the acting, and certainly the visuals and production value, were excellent. The writing was good for the first many seasons. I'd still recommend it for people who haven't seen it yet, just with a caveat that the final season is rushed and poorly written.

Unapologetic Old School Curmudgeon |
So: Jon - 10 years of who is he really? Oh he's the true king! Oh no he's in love with his aunt! Eh, none of that means a damn thing and amounts to jack squat for the story. At least he stayed true to his character Sansa - Family, family, family, family, eh never mind, ill abandon my little brother even though he is one of the few people on Westeros that the North would accept as King, being a Stark. And Ill jeopardize all chances of peace by saying the North is out. And Jon who saved the world, twice, we will just allow him to be banished. OK... the Northerners would just accept that. Brienne - I serve the Starks, I serve Sansa. Nah, screw her Ill become the Kingsguard captain. Bran - I am not Bran Stark anymore, not really. I live in the past, I cant be lord of Winterfell, I am just the three eyes Raven. Eh, never mind, sure Ill be King Tyrion - I am too clever, and in the end learned I'm not as smart as I thought I was. I've fucked up being the Hand twice, eh Ill do it again Jaime - My dream is to be a loved and honorable knight, but I am also kind of a spoiled douche. I saved Kings Landing but was demonized for doing it, so I will accept my burden of being hated for doing the right thing. I will work hard to better myself and in the end realize what a manipulative evil bitch my sister is and find love with a good person who makes me a better person. Nah, Ill chuck it all for the bitch Gray Worm - I serve my queen no matter what. I am a warrior, I fear nothing. I am Master of War. Eh, that's OK that you killed my queen just after her greatest victory and avenging the death of my love, because you are sending Jon Snow back to where he wants to go anyway. Ill just take my troops and leave quietly Dany - I am the breaker of chains and scourge of the oppressors everywhere. I stand for the little people! Nah, Ill just fucking kill them all to get the throne that is mine now anyway that they have surrendered. Bronn - I am an untrustworthy sell sword who would kill kids for enough money, and betray even the person that was kind of my friend. So lets put me in charge of all the money in the Kingdom. Arya - I am Death! I am a warrior! Ill kill you all! Nah, I'm out of here to go explore. Its ok that we fucked Jon and banished him, and I didn't get most of the names on my list that I have been talking about for 10 damn years. Night King - I am the ultimate evil and threat to the world. Nothing else matters. This silly war for the throne is meaningless! I am DOOM! I will kill you all!!! Nah, we will just have one battle, and you wont even lose that many troops in the process Yara - I am Iron Born!! We do not sow! We pay the iron price! Only the strong survive!! Nah, Ill bend the knee to some cripple, and a Stark at that, on the eve of our independence. Sam - All I ever wanted to do was read books and become a Maester and hang out with Jon. Nah, Ill stay in Kings Landing and not go back to the Citidel or ride north with Jon and the Nights Watch (which I am still a sworn member of, and where my wife is from) Cersei - I am the strongest and coldest woman alive - Nah, Ill go out crying Jacyn Hagar - I am the faceless man! I know Arya needs to be trained! Finally she is one of us! Nah, she can just say fuck you and leave and we wont ever revisit that to see why he was happy about it Dothraki - Kill! Rape! Pillage! AHHHHH!!!! Yee-Haw! Oh you killed Khaleesi? Ok, Guess we will just go home Golden Company - We are the best! 20,000 strong! Gone faster than if Thanos snapped his fingers Euron - I command the biggest stongest fleet the world has ever seen! We have Scorpions on every deck!! Oh wait, we just got raped in 20 seconds.... Don't weep for the stupid, or you will be crying all day

Put me in the 'I didn't mind it' category. Was it the best ending ever? No. Was it in my bottom 10 least favorite endings? Also no. I still think Neon Genesis Evangelion had the worst ending of any series I've ever watched through to the end. Anyway, with most of the plot points, I could see how much of it came from GRRM's notes. The whole season was rushed, and they failed to do enough setup last season to make it feel natural, but a lot of the major notes seemed reasonable based on his 'style'. To whit, there are no happy endings, good guys get shafted the hardest, and doing what is right is messy. I'm pretty sure with a couple thousand pages, GRRM could have made the characters transition to their final status feel more natural, and I do agree that the show's writers were obviously not as good as planning out an over-arching story without having the full GRRM source to work with. The show did suffer from trying to move too fast, and not being as well tied together as most of the other seasons, but I still enjoyed my time watching it. Overall my impression of this season, and the final episode, is that I've got more positive feelings than negative ones. - Bret

I will say it again though, Dinklage is one hell of a good actor. He gave an amazing performance through the whole series. Don't weep for the stupid, or you will be crying all day

Chip away the stone |
I found the finale very underwhelming. I'll give it another watch in a couple of days to see if I feel any different. It for sure did seem like a bunch of cop-outs to get Dany out of the way ASAP and wrap everyone's story up. Starting with the goodbyes scene at the docks of King's Landing, I was reminded of the final scenes of LoTR: RoTK. In both cases they went on a long time, but ROTKs resonated, whereas last night's didn't for me. As far as Jon, at the final scene I'm got the impression the whole Night's Watch thing might have been a ruse to placate Grey Worm, and Jon was just going to kick it in exile, with the Wildlings.

From Twitter: @VanLathan 14h14 hours ago Tyrion: You don’t want to be lord of Winterfell? Bran: I don’t “want” anymore. ... Tyrion: You want to be King of the whole shit? Bran: Shiiiit what you think I wheeled over here for my G! Where the Throne at?

That was a bit confusing. Was he just escorting the wildlings back or was he joining them? Guess it doesn't matter. His uncle was a ranger, so if anyone shows up and says "where the fuck is Jon" they could just say he's out being a ranger and he will be back whenever. ___________________________________Sigforum - port in the fake news storm.____________Be kind to the Homeless. He did a fantastic job with this role. Honestly, I thought his speech to Jon trying to sway him did a great job of explaining how Dany got to this point, and how everyone had helped turn her into a conqueror. The rest of the season just made it seem like she was becoming isolated and loosing the people who grounded her. Turns out that, no, the people following her have unwittingly been grooming her to be a merciless killer by applauding her every time she commits mass murder and topples a society in the name of justice and a better world. I hadn't really thought of it like that before, and in that light her razing of King's Landing made a little more sense...still not ENOUGH sense, but it helped. I thought Dinklage did a great job of showing the conflict between still loving her, hating himself for helping corrupt her, and the pain of knowing he has to actively convince someone to kill the last person alive that he truly cares about. For me, this was one of the better scenes in the episode. - Bret

I took it as Bran knew he was going to end up king but couldn't let the cat out of the bag and risk messing things up, so he let it play out turning down being boss of the north. Also, Arya.......talk about killing my brother one more time and I'll slit your throat. Still a bad ass. And hooray for Ghost finally getting a pet for losing an ear and a butt ton of fur. ___________________________________Sigforum - port in the fake news storm.____________Be kind to the Homeless. Or maybe not, since we thought the Dothraki and most of the Unsullied were wiped out, but there were still bunches of them left. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

Again If Bran “knew” the ending he LET DANY KILL BASICALLY A MILLION PEOPLE This is worse on two accounts 1). Bran the Broken is the most genocidal of them all and 2). None of the other fucking characters were smart to say “hey wait, if you knew how this shit was going to turn out WHY DIDNT YOU FUCKING SAY SOMETHING!” —————————————————— If the meek will inherit the earth, what will happen to us tigers?

His finest performance anywhere to date, hands-down: Hey, Jackweed, I get more action in a week than you've had in your entire life. I've got houses in L.A., Paris and Vail. In each one, a 70 inch plasma screen. So I suggest you wipe that stupid smile off your face before I come over there and SMACK it off! You feeling strong, my friend? Call me elf ONE more time!

The Dothraki response, or lack thereof, doesn’t surprise me. When Khals die or are defeated the strongest warrior will become the new Khal, I don’t recall retribution being a big part of the society. Westeros can probably expect a fair bit of raping and pillaging in their future. Why there are still so many around after the Battle of Winterfell is another story... The Unsullied though at the very least should have executed Jon and Tyrion on the spot. In Episode 5, I was sure the woman with the child was a Faceless Man sent to take out Arya. Would have been a good ending to her arc, IMO.
