So how long do we give it before the design kinks are ironed out? Six months? A year? I think it was somewhere around a year for the Gen 3 and 4 to be reliable, and there are many design changes here that could go south.

I have a Gen4 G19 with some minor mods and intend to get a second one. Mine has no internal mods, Vickers Tango Down slide catch lever, mag release, and Warren Tacticals. Since I want a second one, I've spent some time evaluating the Gen5.

For my own requirements, the Gen5 G19 is not something that works for me. Here's why:

1) I want the second G19 to be the same as the first. Not so much as a backup, but for dry-fire and daily handling. I've always dry-fired and generally handled defensive handguns daily to maintain familiarity.

2) Poly versus rifled barrel. I prefer the poly barrels. Easier to clean with my lead reloads than conventional rifling. As far as the velocity loss goes, I have no idea what is is. Probably not a big deal, but given a choice, I'll take more rather than less. Forensics after a shooting is not something I dwell over daily.

3) Ambi slide catch levers. I'm right handed and don't need one. In an emergency, I can release the standard lever with my LH index finger anyway. Plus, don't know if it's accurate or not, somebody mentioned that the right side lever would interfere with the holster fit. Regardless, I prefer the Vickers style as opposed to the Glock OEM. Which means I would have to hope they offer an ambi for Gen5's.

4) Finger grooves. Like most others, I don't like them. However, I don't want one G19 with them and one without. However, I solved the problem myself by light use of a Dremel felt bob on the tops of the bumps. No need to remove.

5) Flared magwell. Can create a grip fit issue. This depends on your hand size; mine are relatively small. With my G19, I find the bottom of the palm/pinky sits flush with bottom of the standard mag. This means that with the Gen5 I'm going to get a different fit, with the flare pushing that part of my hand/finger slightly outwards. Insurmountable? No, but why do I need the problem?

6) Locking block pin. Maybe it's my ignorance, but all I can generate on this is a yawn.

Not that anybody else cares, but I'll get a Gen4, hopefully at a good used price.

Having stated my own preferences, I'll say that I'm not knocking the Gen5. Some may find it a better gun for them than the Gen4's. The more choices the better.

M series/Gen 5s have already been in use with some law enforcement agencies since August 2016. So they've already had a year of "field testing", and the kinks should have already been identified and ironed out. (Such as the locking lever issues experienced by Indy PD last summer.)

Thanks for posting this. Looks like holster comparability will be a concern. Great opportunity for some gen 4 duplicates for me. People will be migrating so a Gen 4 17 and 19 at a great price sounds excellent to me.

Cool pics of the internals. I see their G19 had a smooth trigger (and was Austrian). It's about time!

I like the finger grooves on my 19 but prefer the smooth front grip on the 17 (thats why I have a gen2). So there may be another 17 in my future...just because.

Aren't you not supposed to shoot lead from the poly barrels?

I've had a "few" 19s since 2005, so I can say with some certainty "I'll be adding a Gen 5 19 soon Wink"

I am interested to see how the grip feels with the flared magwell.

Of course my LT is asking me about switching us over to these next year since he saw pictures on the internet. Gotta have the latest and newest I guess.
I told him no, we're switching to gen4 31s unless they come around and do something about gen5s in other calibers.

Haven't owned a Glock since I sold my G31 several years ago, the 5- 17/19 interest me more than any time before.

I think I would go with the G17-5. If the grip has been reduced like the G19-4 grips.

Good move Glock.

I keep hoping one of these early reviews will say if the trigger is improved. The design has changed slightly, so I'm hopeful.

I switched us from the 22 to the gen3 31 in 2008. I got tired of buying my own ammo. In 2010 I got four gen4 31s in to test. I'm hoping Glock eventually releases a gen 5 31. Hoping it's not too much of a design change for them. Maybe the new locking block is strong enough. That's why I held off my budget request so far. I can wait another year.

Ok just looked at a gen-5 17/19 $599 each at Point Blank in Greenwood, Indiana. Very nice!!!!! After looking at both I'm actually leaning towards a G17. Reason being the cutout on the front strap of the magwell is more pronounced on the G19 plus it has a shorter grip therefore my pinky finger goes across it. I could see that being annoying in actual shooting and/or extended shooting sessions. Also, the trigger pull was really nice for a Glock.

Glockmiester has both the 17 and 19 available for preorder at $559 with delivery early Sept.

I want one but I'm going to wait a bit.

Just left the gun store. I drove here all excited to pick up a 19. Left with nothing. That stupid stupid stupid cutout in the front of the grip! Why on earth would Glock include the only thing that people criticized the Gen 2 over? I've shot a Gen 2 before and it bothered my pinky finger and not having that lip there feels like the gun is sliding out of my hand. The cutout is also sharp. Held it back and forth between the Gen 4 and have to admit the Gen4 feels better, even with the finger grooves that I'm not a huge fan of. Totally disappointed. Outside of that stupid cutout, the gun is damn near perfect. Ughhhh.

Yup I was all excited to get a Gen-5 19 until I held one and felt the sharp cutout. Guess I'll get a 17.
