I used to work at a depot these guys "visited." It was 1983-86, I'm certain they carried 357s.

U.S. Nuclear Convoy Guards’ New Pistol Looks Right Out Of John Wick

Federal agents who protect trucks carrying America’s most powerful weapons are set to be armed with spendy ‘Gucci Glock’ inspired pistols.

BY JOSEPH TREVITHICK

The National Nuclear Security Administration, or NNSA, which oversees America's nuclear weapons stockpile, recently announced that it plans to arm security personnel who guard convoys carrying hydrogen bombs and other sensitive cargoes with new and very high-end 9mm pistols. If all goes to plan, individuals working for NNSA's Office of Secure Transportation, or OST, are set to get ZEV Technologies' OZ9 Combat pistols, a design that evolved from the iconic Glock series and that looks like it was ripped straight out of a John Wick movie...

What A-holes...and with OUR tax money!

No doubt built with special polymers, resistant to radioactivity. The agent will still glow in the dark after exposure, but the pistol won't. A cousin of the "invisible" Glocks that made it through TSA scanners several years ago.

Love this little tidbit: "The announcement said that the plan is to acquire the OZ9 pistols "by means of other than full and open competition," language that typically refers to a sole-source contract."

Hunter Biden probably has a piece of this. Roll Eyes Will likely be manufactured in China.

For those that don't want to click on the link:

Now my own opinion is if I was going to be the guard for a nuclear weapon while it is being transported.... I'd like something a little more than a 9mm semi-auto pistol.

Naw, it uses those boutique 9mm bullets Joey From Scranton was talking about: "...it blows the lung out of the body".

Why couldn’t these guards just be issued a Gen 5 G17 or G45 and be done with it?

They're equipped with more than handguns. Some info on the job of nuclear materials courier:

Most of these guys are former CAG, Devgru and SAD. They are the real deal and they are top shooters. They have a near unlimited budget, so I’m really surprised that they didn’t issue Staccatos. They had Les Baer’s for many years.

Thank you.

While IME the Zev Glocks are too finicky for duty use, the DOE guys are serious shooters and given their mission they should have what ever tools they think they need.

Their ammo costs will exceed the cost of these guns their first training cycle….

For those who think that is an outrageous use of your tax dollars consider the cost, financial and otherwise, of a nuke in the wrong hands.

Those fancy slide cuts are no doubt absolutely necessary for the mission.

I assume these guards are uniformed. If so, just give them Glock 17s, or dare I say it 22s.

I've seen them moving nukes around Malmstrom. The convoy looked nothing like that. It was comprised of roughly six HMMWVs front and back, manned 50 cals mounted up top of one in front and one in the back, and two Hueys, each with manned door guns escorting them. As I recall, there was Highway Patrol front and back as well. They weren't messing around.

It's actually rather tame compared to prior ZEV "standards". Well at least they kept the hole cutting CNC machine in check for this "Combat" model of theirs. No lightening holes; I do think that's a new record for ZEV.
