Thank you for contacting the Industry Processing Branch of the National Firearms Act (NFA) Division. This is an automated message intended to address common inquiries. Answers to many questions regarding the processing of your application(s) can be found at
https://www.atf.gov/qa-categor...nal-firearms-act-nfa.
Examiners are no longer assigned to NFA applications until the background check has been returned from FBI-NICS with a Proceed or Denial. If an examiner or research assistant has reached out directly to you by email regarding your application, please reply directly to those emails.
If you are contacting ATF for a status check on your NFA application, please review our average processing times located at
https://www.atf.gov/resource-c...ent-processing-times. Applications exceeding the average processing times are generally due to a Delayed background check being researched by FBI-NICS. The NFA Division is unable to approve an application until we have received a Proceed back from FBI-NICS for each responsible person listed as part of the application.
If your application was submitted within the past 90 days, we will not respond to your email with a status check. The same policy applies to requests for status checks made through our call center.
If you are contacting ATF for a status check on your NFA application submitted more than 90 days ago, please reply to this email with your control number and submission date in the subject line of your email. The reply email should include your name, date of birth, transferee name (if different), and form type (Form 1, eForm 4, etc.) for each application.
The NFA Division will expedite applications for active-duty military service members with pending PCS orders. Email the letter and your PCS orders to nfafax@atf.gov. Include “Military Expedite” and your control number(s) in the subject line of the email.
The NFA Division will expedite applications for law enforcement personnel when the firearm(s) are intended for official duty use. A letter signed by the Chief Law Enforcement Officer (Sheriff or Chief) indicating that the officer has a pending application, and that the firearm is approved by the CLEO to be used as a duty weapon should be submitted to nfafax@atf.gov.
