Got a birthday gift certificate for Cabelas. The last thing I need is another firearm but I was thinking I might find something of interest in the library. When I was last there, probably in February, they had a decent selection of used guns. Not this time. Most of the pistol cases were empty and the few guns there were second hand Ruger .22's. In the new gun section, it was pretty much the same thing. A few Kimbers and a Springfield or two. Again, multiple empty display cases. Remembering the recent history with Dicks, I asked one of the salesmen if they were getting out of the gun business. He said no but that ever since Covid 19 hit, they have been cleaned out of inventory. Later, a friend told me, he encountered similar situation at his local Bass Pro Shop. I know that gun sales have been brisk lately but I am suspicious. Local gun shops seem to have their normal inventory. With the combined buying power of Bass Pro/Cabelas, seems to me they shouldn't have any problem getting guns from distributors. Perhaps in the politically correct climate we now find ourselves, they are preparing to limit themselves to T shirts, boat shoes and wildly overpriced fishing gear.

Always possible, but I doubt it. Gun cases being emptied out these past few months was/is definitely a very real thing.

This is the new 'normal' for gun stores pretty much.
I do some part time work at a LGS and just yesterday, between the three of us, we sold twenty four firearms with a little over $20k in total sales. We were humpin'!
Some customers told us that the local Bass Pro was just about picked clean of most firearms. Others told us that the local indoor range had sold off even their range rental guns. I'm a little dubious of this, but I will see for myself this week.

No, all gun stores are picked clean. I went into a very big store with a very big range and they have 6 display cases of guns.....each one had 3-4 guns in it......they told me that they've been selling guns like crazy since the riots and can't get new ones in.........
It seems pretty difficult to find anything in stock. I have been looking for a used Glock 23 myself.
Nope.

I was in Cabelas today looking for 9mm ammo.....completely cleaned out. Only two glass display cases with handguns.....some revolvers and 1911s. Same scenario when I was in Bass Pro two weeks ago. Reminds me when .22 ammo was nowhere to be found a few years back.
Lipsey's has 1.005 9mm pistol SKUs in their catalog and FIVE are in stock. RSR Group has 983 SKUs and 20 in stock. Zander's has 867 SKUs and 11 in stock. Because of how their site works, I can only tell you that Davidson's has 13 SKUs in stock, but not how many there are total.
If you sort through what is out there, it is not stuff most people want. Similar numbers for ARs and 12 Gauge shotguns with 18.5" barrels.

You mentioned the library specificallybwhich is usually full of used items.
In addition to the buying spree everyone has been on the last few months. I can't imagine many people are looking to sell, especially to a Cabelas type.
I went into my local Bass Pro and was amazed at how empty the handgun cases and rifle racks were. There were maybe 16 handguns left, mostly higher end Kimber or Springfield. Sign of the times for now.
our local cabelas is stripped clean as well, my local gun store shockingly had a 43x in stock, I almost bought it but I need another one like I need 100 of them. he said it had been sitting in the case for 30 minutes. lol
Local shops around here are pretty much picked clean. By the end of the weekends there's barely anything besides Hi-Points and NAA derringers left in the cases.

My local Academy Sports always has a good selection of pistols and decent prices. I strolled by the case on Saturday and they had 5 pistols in it. No stock in back, just 5 pistols in the store.
Considering the number of first time gun buyers, I'm not surprised the big box stores are cleaned out. They may not even be aware that their LGS exists and Cabelas etc are probably the first places that come to mind.
