One-Third of Iowa Voters Could Bail on Their Candidate, Pollster Warns

The Republican presidential primaries have been chaotic thus far. And the chaos could continue.

Nearly a third (31 percent) of likely GOP caucus goers say they could change their vote before Monday, according to a fresh survey from Public Policy Polling. The new data suggest that “there are still a lot of votes on the table," PPP wrote in a release accompanying the results.

What the numbers imply, though, is a mixed bag. On the one hand, Trump may be insulated from such fickle caucus goers, as 80 percent of his supporters say they're "firmly committed to him". Compare that to 71 percent of Cruz's backers and a paltry 65 percent of Rubio's.

However, PPP explains the flip side:

There are reasons within these numbers to see the possibility of both Cruz and Rubio outperforming their current standing on Monday night. Currently 30 percent of the likely electorate is supporting someone among the also rans — the 9 candidates in single digits. But 43 percent of those voters are open to the possibility of changing their minds — possibly casting a strategic vote. And among that group supporting the also rans 35 percent say they would pick Rubio, 25 percent say they would pick Cruz, and 17 percent say they would pick Trump if they had to choose between the leading contenders.

Were such a scenario to break, there's "a real possibility" Rubio could capture 20 to 25 percent, PPP states. Its poll currently projects 31 percent for Trump, 23 percent for Cruz and 14 percent for Rubio, taken from a sample of 780 people.

Anecdotally, THE WEEKLY STANDARD's Steve Hayes has seen signs of the volatility in person. He writes in a dispatch from West Des Moines:

… Trump's erratic behavior has given some Iowa voters pause as they make final decisions about whom they will support in next week's caucuses. His ostensible reason for skipping the debate – a five-month old feud with Megyn Kelly – seems odd and whimsical. And while so those descriptors fit so much of what Trump has done during his run for the Republican nomination, the risks he is taking so close to the caucuses raise questions about whether his ostensible reason for skipping the debate is the real one.

Tantaros made a point that with Trump not on the stage at the debate, the other candidates will be going after Cruz instead of Trump.
Was thinking about just that today. Are the other candidates going to waste much of their precious time bashing Trump, the guy who's not there, or Cruz who is, and is in reach of them. This 'could' be very bad for Cruz if he falters, 'or', if one of the others shine a bit more than usual (i.e. Rubio, Cristie).

I think there will be a fight for face time on camera. If you are lucky, you may get to hear Kaysick tell his riveting story again. I will not be watching the show.

Not exactly....
The Weekly Standard is Bill Kristol and Fred Barnes.
They are even more "establishment" than National Review.
I started reading WFB and NR when I was 10. That was 40 years ago. Back then, Democrats ran everything and the conservative movement was kind of edgy. NR did a great deal to promote Ronald Reagan, who was a big fan of WFB.

Check the contributors to this piece and you'll find Kristol's name prominently listed. If he's going to participate in this sort of nonsense, then he shouldn't be surprised when people like me question his motives in other reporting on the same topic.

The Islamic advocate and fashion-blogger invited by Google and Fox to question the GOP’s 2016 candidates at the Jan. 28 debate is also a supporter of far-left 2016 candidate, Democrat Bernie Sanders.

What are they thinking ? They bring in a Bernie Sanders supporter to attack the highest polling Republican candidate ?

So is FOX totally incompetent, 'or' are they actively attempting to damage Trump? Hmmmmmmmm.

Yep... well, it is called commentary and opinion.

Well this Trump supporter is still going to caucus for DJT come next week and I do not plan on watching Fox tonight either. CNN was showing a "Yuge" line up to attend Trumps event at Drake University also. Looked like way more than a capacity crowd and Trump's folks were going through the lines and moving vets to the front or to a separate line. The reporter didn't make it clear enough to know which it was.

Oh it just gets better and better. Big Grin

Nothing but a smile on my face watching the establishment and it's owned media implode.

I have been waiting years for people to get it and here they hand it over on a platter as Trump plays them. I have hope! Real fucking hope for real change!

Go Trump!

Which would usually mean the crowds were so huge that the standing room only was a circumference of 6 blocks.

I truly hope that they rake in a TON of money for the veterans.

I have been waiting since a morning in the '90s when I watched Katie Couric interview Bob Dole on the Today Show. She was rude, disrespectful, and threw one "gotcha" question after another at a smiling Bob Dole. The Republican position on the media had long been to eat the shit sandwiches the media served up... with a "Thank you, may I have more, please" attitude. This extended all the way to Romney.

And I have been simmering, simmering, thinking "One of these days somebody with balls will just tell them to go fuck themselves."

I thought it might be Newt. Flash in the pan.

But then the skies opened. Along came Donald Effing Trump. And I have been filled with gratitude ever since.

Tonight, once again he gives the MSM-- specifically FOX NEWS-- the finger.

It warms my heart.

I have the sound off on the O'Reilly show and he's talking with Krauthammer. Even without hearing the words, it's almost painful to watch these utterly clueless establishment Republicans. It's like watching blind men bumping and stumbling around in a maze. Truly, they have no idea.

So can we expect to see someone from the some extreme right group or maybe the tea party questioning the Democratic candidates?
